I remember going to EB Games to pick up a DC Gameshark and the high and mighty clerk was all "yeah, I hear you can use this to play import games" and I responded with "Yep, I've got Jet Set Radio on the way." Shut him up quickly.

I used to order from The Rage a lot, but they went away sometime in the early to mid 00s.

Oh yes, The Rage (who as I recall, were Orthodox Jews and so would close early on the weekends, making it annoying to order from/contact them at times), Tronix (I think he's still around but doesn't carry J-games), Japan Video Games...it goes on!  There was also Mark In Japan, a guy who you could request to find titles for you in places like Akiba and such.

Ultimate Battle 22 did suck, but for some reason it was still fun a  bit. Probably on Bloody Roar level.

That game was garbage

The best Dragon Ball 2D fighter was Hyper Dimension:

people liked this but i never saw the hype. Preferred DBZ Legends anyway.

Hyper Dimension actually played like a real, GOOD fighting game.  Legends was something completely different and almost akin to being a "DBZ simulator" game.

I remember going to EB Games to pick up a DC Gameshark and the high and mighty clerk was all "yeah, I hear you can use this to play import games" and I responded with "Yep, I've got Jet Set Radio on the way." Shut him up quickly.

I used to shut the clerks up by telling them my own store already had Dreamcasts (that was almost a year early!) and PS2s (like what...5-6 months early?) for sale and I'd played them already.  People knew of the store so they knew I wasn't lying.  There was one time where I got into it in full-on nerd mode with some EB clerk who refused to believe what I was telling him about the PS2.  I was flying out to E3 in a couple of days and he was telling me how he didn't need to bother with E3 because he went to an EB-only trade show where "they showed everything."  And yet he was just spouting off lies about the PS2.  I couldn't figure out why since it was obvious I wasn't going to be pre-ordering one.

When I got a PSP in '04, it was always in my coat pocket (I used it for music as well as games).  Months went by but I never broke it out at a game store besides my own until they started carrying American PSP titles pre-launch.  The EB clerk was wondering why I wanted to buy them so badly with no PSP, so I took mine out and the clerks were all freaking out, wondering how the hell I'd gotten one already.  Coincidentally, two other guys in the store also happened to be looking for PSP games and broke theirs out, too.  The clerks were just  :o :o :o "WTF?!?"   :lol

The Japanese manga and game publisher Square Enix has announced on Wednesday that it will launch a digital manga store in North America and France this fall.

The first chapters of Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Black Butler, and O-Parts Hunter are already downloadable for free from Square Enix's North American and European websites in advance of the paid service's launch, with other series planned for later. (The North American website lists The Record of a Fallen Vampire, Pandora Hearts, Sumomomo Momomo, and Spiral: Bonds of Reasoning as "coming soon.") The service requires Adobe Flash Player on Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X.

The service is on display at Square Enix's booth at Comic-Con International in San Diego this week.

Bleach is the worst thing ever wow

Did anyone else read the new chapter? the villain is essentially hunting down children.  At one point he mentions that he was simply pretending to search for them.

I do need to start one piece eventually.  Will be harder to get into if onemanga and all these other sites are going under.

yeah, this is a good week to catch up on one piece.  Since I have no plans tomorrow I'm going to just marathon a bunch of manga before it all disappears  :lol

and Bleach sucks.  Worst shounen manga out there.  Which is a shame because during the first half of the series it was a nice action manga.

reading elfen lied.  I have a soft spot for really terrible manga that are page turners and full of fucked up moments.  The art is soooooooooooo bad.  Moe derp derp shit is awful, but the uber violence keeps me reading and chapters take about the same time as Bleach to read.

read Solanin and it was a nice little slice of life manga.  Nothing too amazing, but the art was real good.

finished reading Elfen Lied.  I went in expecting guro moe violence, but it was actually a solid manga.  The gore/nudity wasn't much worse than Berserk or Gantz and the fucked up ness was nowhere near Narutaru/Bokurano.  The actual story was a solid b-horror page turner manga/anime with likable characters, an interesting plot, action, comedy, romance, etc... I think the plot kinda rushed and got worse towards the end when all the stuff goes down, and they introduced too many new characters in the last 20 chapters to really develop them and work them into the story, but it was a decent ending was very entertaining to read.  It wasn't Pluto or X level of great suspense manga, but I think it's better than stuff like Death Note.  At least one thumb up.

I read that the anime stopped about halfway through the story and made up an ending.  I think the rest of the manga is definitely worth checking out if you liked the story in the show.  There's a lot of stuff that happens in the last few volumes.

One thing that was kind of ridiculous in the ending was
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Bando surviving miraculously despite having lost half his body.  Riiiight.
Also would have preferred a happier ending.  But at least it was mainly happy.  I figured Nana or Yuka would have died for sure by the end.

Eh, they're entertaining but even most of the manga in the top tier of writing isn't what I'd call good or great.  Urasawa is a prime example.  He writes extremely entertaining manga (Monster, 20th Century Boys, Pluto), but I'd argue none of them are actually good literature.  When I'm reading them they are OMG THIS IS SO GOOD but once I finish them I'm like "meh", which basically describes my experience with 90% of manga out there.  As long as I go into manga with low expectations of just getting something entertaining out of it, I dig it and manga is fun to read.  But if I go in and expect good writing/good storytelling, then most manga is not "good".  The writing level is above your average videogame, but far below films or novels.

But hey, if super sasuke makes you happy, more power to you.

Stuff like Naruto are pure entertainment, but I'd say Tezuka and Urusawa are fantastic storytellers.

What manga are you reading?

This is why I mostly stick with drama, seinen, and gekiga. I mostly loath shounen, although it can be entertaining. Stuff like One Piece are exceptions.

I'm amazed you'd classify Urusawa in particular as "entertaining". Urusawa? Entertaining? When I think of "entertaining" I think of a any random shounen manga, that strives to tell stories on the most basic of levels. This is..puzzling. I've never really read anyone describe Urusawa as entertaining.

This kinda makes me wonder what your exposure to so-called hier tier manga is. Do you find anime to be more fulfilling than manga? I find it to be the opposite these days. Manga has more depth, more variety, better writing, and often better art.

Different strokes I guess.

Yeah I do think in general anime tends to be a better storytelling medium than manga.

With good anime, like a film, they plan out everything before making it and structure is a main part of it.  Because of the way manga runs over years and years, the writing quality doesn't feel very consistent.

I read all types of manga.  Shoujo, Shounen, Jump, Seinen, etc...
I love reading it, but there's not much that really impresses me.

Otoh with anime every year there's always something on par with the best films each year.  Baccano, Tatami Galaxy, Sword of the Stranger, Eva 2.22; It's seems like you don't get manga of that quality, at least not anymore.

I just finished the first story arc of Durarara (ep1-12) and the story, like Baccano, was GOOD and very well written and thought out.  I was really impressed when the storyline finished in ep12.  I wish I got that feeling when I finish a manga storyline.

Himuro, what are some manga you'd recommend with great stories and writing?

But if I go in and expect good writing/good storytelling, then most manga is not "good".  The writing level is above your average videogame, but far below films or novels.

It took you this long to figure this out?

junpei what do you think of Prunus Girl? I found it absolutely hilarious. I got to chapter 5 before I could stop though. The whole premise is fucking stupid and it's admittedly not a good manga at all but it's SO FUCKING FUNNY (in a bad way).

I like it. Manga like that is typically right up my alley, the art is nice, all the characters are nice even they're not very original. It's enjoyable. I really don't find most manga bad like some of you or at the GAF thread.

If I enjoy it, it's good. Especially with my gauge of judging manga/comics/BD/etc: "Is the art good? Yes." Then the series is automatically good and it can only go up or down from there. Like Arago for instance: This art is interesting, Ewan sacrifices his life to save Arago, Arago takes Ewan's arm, Arago joins police force in honor of his brother, Arago meets characters, Arago finds out that the man who killed his parents and brother may or may not still be alive, Arago meets more characters, FUCKING FOUR HORSEMAN OF THE APOCALYPSE SHOW UP. I like this series.
