I'm watching MAZINKAISER

:bow Jam Project :bow2

FUCK YEAH.  ROBO BRO SHOW.  So badass

I never knew that Banpresto got Go Nagai to create Mazinkaiser for SRW so that Mazinger could get an upgrade at the finale of the original series (F Final).  Awesome.  No wonder it's such a badass looking robot.  SRW makes the world a better place.

Finished Mazinkaiser.  Was alright.  I find that most Super robo shows are kind of slow paced dull monster of the week shows until the very end where they get INCREDIBLY BADASS AND ZOMG with final powerups/attacks/fights to the death.  Mazinkaiser was no exception.

Final OAV was quite good.  I like how even though the OAV is pretty recent (2000-2002), they got it to look like it was made in the 70s.

A bit of the Naruto/Pain battle from Ultimate Ninja 2.  Total cocktease, the game opens with Pain destroying Konoha and Sage Naruto showing up and then it flashes back and you have to play all the lame stuff up until that point!  :(

K-on!! 20 was a nice finish to the band.  Looking back it's actually pretty nice how the show covers the entire high school experience.  That isn't really something you see that often (Persona 3/4 gives you one year, but K-on gives you the entire thing).  By the time you watch their 3rd live and remember back to the others ones and how the characters have grown and all the experiences over the years, you actually kind of feel like "wow it's been a while" just like how you were in your 3rd year of HS at the end.  The show definitely grows on you.

I'm guessing the last few eps will all just lead up to Graduation and that'll be the last ep of the show since it's the true end of high school days.

then K-on!!! the college years :D

I didn't want to post about till there was an article about it but:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2010-08-22/black-lagoon-hellsing-creators-discuss-illegal-uploads

I don't want cancer. Not excatly related but Hiroe recently released a Hellsing doujin at C78 featuring everyones favorite female Nazi. Hirano actually drew a page in the book as well. It's very graphic. A certain someone would know about this if he wasn't a cigarillo and got in chat every once and in a while.

I've been watching a couple of series that are several years old recently:

The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye

The post-apocalyptic wanderings of a young girl who just happens to be a skilled swordfighter. Sounds a lot like Kino's Journey, and there's some truth to that, although it tends to favor a more over-arching storyline and isn't nearly as surreal or Aesop-ish. It is pretty good though and tends to have high quality animation.

Ouran High School Host Club

Drawing from the same well as The Wallflower, I find myself smiling at this shows antics far more than I should. It at least doesn't throw at fanservice every two seconds [unless you count flower close-ups of pretty boys] and doesn't treat the viewer like a three-year-old. It's definitely a guilty-pleasure.

It got canceled on Chapter 99. Sick burn.

So I just finished Eden of the East and the movies. The best parts of the series are visuals and the music, I liked the series overall though. The movies felt like really long episodes than actual movies, I didn't find them as good as the TV series. The ending was okay.

Picked up the first two volumes of Biomega by Tsutomu Nihei for half-off. I really love this guy's work, his art is just so striking and surreal. He's easily among my favorite manga artists. Nihei's not much of a writer though, pretty much all of his works feature pointless meandering and incomprehensible technobabble with a smattering of violent action scenes, but I can forgive that. Biomega fits nicely beside Blame! and Noise in all regards.

It's really a shame that he hasn't really broken into the animation scene in any meaningful way. There was that Blame! promo OVA a few years back, but it never became anything other than a collection of scenes from the manga in animated form. A collaboration between Nihei and Satoshi Kon would have been godly.

I realized playing SRW that I never finished Gunbuster when I was 13 or 14 and watched it.  So I remedied that by watching it over the last few days.  I remembered the boobs since it was the first anime I'd seen that had nudity.  But what I didn't remember was there being a GIANT SUPER ROBOT.  Apparently that was because I never made it to ep4!

It was slow, but good, and full of whiny crying pathetic Shinjis, but then in ep4 when GUNBUSTER appears it got kind of classic great (although Noriko's transformation from ultra pathetic to SUPER AWESOME FIGHTER was kind of instantaneous and lol).  Then ep5 was ok.  The pacing felt rushed but it had some cool action.  So I went into ep6 expecting it to be this epic awesome finale that is why Gunbuster is so well remembered; something on par with the Kawaru ep of Eva, or the final FLCL ep, or final Gurren Lagann ep.  What I got was 24 mins of black & white oddly paced build up, a bunch of line art storyboards for 20 seconds depicting what was supposed to be the major epic battle, and then an ok little finale with a tit.  Kind of disappointing.  Overall I liked it, but you can tell they just didn't have the budget to do the big action epic they wanted in the last 2 eps, so I felt it was a slow build up to a peak in ep4 and then kind of rushed/budget/incomplete story after that.  Not really the anime classic I was expecting, but despite problems it's a good OAV.  Would give it around ***/****

It also had more boob than any Highschool of the Dead ep will ever have.

Still Interesting to see Anno and Gainax trademarks and style choices that would eventually make it into Eva.  Now I gotta finally watch Diebuster.  I only made it 2eps into that when it first came out.
