Finished watching Ouran High School Host Club today. I would say that it's easily one of the best anime series I've seen in the past few years. It's fun and funny, with a bit of drama mixed in for a good measure. And it doesn't fall into a lot of the pitfalls that so many series lately seem to. However, it's...probably not something that someone who doesn't like anime would enjoy.

I liked it a lot too, especially since they never got serious with the romance bullshit like most animes.

Yeah, I thought for a while that it would descend into painful love triangle mode like a lot of series do, but it never did. Good for them.

Ouran High School Host Club (Nippon TV, 4 April–27 September 2006)

Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha (Mainichi Broadcasting System—TBS, 5 April–28 September 2007)

I DON'T THINK SO. Ouran was cool though.

I thought it was because the series takes place in an alternate reality where pants were never invented.   :lol  I'm gonna be disappointed if that's not true.

I skimmed an episode to see if it was really as bad as I've been led to believe. It was. I mean, there's at least twenty panty shots per episodes and they're all pretty much exactly the same as the twenty you saw last episode. So, it's like, what's the point? If you're that desperate you might as well just watch porn or something.

High School of the Dead at least has the decency to come up with new and inventive fanservice shots with each episode.

Quote
I thought it was because the series takes place in an alternate reality where pants were never invented

I'm pretty sure that's not true, because I was looking at some shots from the finale and I distinctly saw male characters wearing regular shorts. Now, they're not technically PANTS, but they do operate under the same principle.

The more I go back and rewatch episodes of The Big O, the more I can't help but think that it's one of the most mature animes ever made. Not so much in terms of the over-arching story, which is merely a packing together of various scifi tropes in a cryptic, nonsensical way, but in the characters and the stories that populate the episodes in between. Basically, I think this is a series that's strength lies more in its episodic episodes than in its story episodes. Although, that's not entirely the case.

The episode I'm watching right now is Winter Night Phantom and, even though it's focus is on a secondary character and it ultimately has little bearing on the main story, it's just so, so good. The way it looks, the story, the characters, the music, it all just comes together to achieve something close to perfection. That probably seems like a strange thing to say about a mecha anime, especially one with bombastic battles in a number of episodes, but this episode in particular could almost be mistaken for the episode of some noir series.

I've seen very few other animes that can come close to The Big O when it hits all the right notes, and it does that more than once.

So thanks to the other anime thread on the first page, I've added a few series to my netflix queue and the first one up is Blade of the Immortal.  I was on the fence about it and haven't looked at a second of its animation quality, but I really dug the manga.  I mean, it was pretty run of the mill type Kurosawa wannabe wank, but the art was so great I'd pick up a book whenever I could.  Anyone ever seen the anime?

I seen the first episode, it doesn't really capture the style of the manga. Since you brought up BotI, I was recently reading a bunch of Samura's stuff(Brute Love, Bradherley Coach, Ohikkoshi). Ohikkoshi is nice slice of life/romance stuff but the other are just fucked up feels bad man material. Excellent art though.

Kaiba is very, very artsy Yuasa.

Tatami is him reigning in his artistic style with DOWN TO EARTH LOOKING CHARACTERS & NARRATIVE, which made it his most accessible piece and the only thing of his I've really enjoyed.

I gave Kaiba a few eps, but didn't like the art style and got bored.

It's like Yuasa chart:
Least Accessible "weird" ------------------- Most Accessible "normal"
Kaiba ------ Mind Game ----- Kemonozume ----- Tatami Galaxy

kuchuu blanko / Trapeze is good.  It's episodic stories of people with mental problems but some of the pairings make for pretty hilarious eps like the Yakuza member who has an OCD fear of edges.

I liked Kemonozume.  It was funny and had good action and a bit of a story.  Kind of gross though (I don't like gross in my anime, which is a big reason I usually don't like Yuasa) and I thought the final ep sucked (was just nonsense).  Mind Game was ...ok, but didn't like the art and it was kind of boring.

If you're not feeling Tatami after 3 eps you wouldn't like the rest.  The whole show is like that.  It's similar to Bakemonogatari in the aspect that it's almost a novel with non-stop dialogue.  I thought the dialogue was hilarious so I didn't mind.
