Oh, the uncensored versions are out?  Still haven't watched ep1 because didn't want to watch the censored tv broadcast when it first aired.

Bakuman was cool. I liked the first opening they showed but the second opening made it seem like a romance show.

I watched this season's "Queen's Blade," Samurai Girls.  It has a pretty cool art style, with all the backdrops having a painted look to them.  Basically this is yet another "let's take historical figures and turn them into moe girls" anime, following Ikkitousen and Koihime Musou.  But instead of using Chinese warriors, this one goes with Japanese Sengoku era figures like Sanada Yukimura and Hattori Hanzo.  The latter has been turned into a somewhat ditzy MAID NINJA who is forced go down on her female master...uh, yeah.

But amazingly, what sets this apart from the rest is that the main character IS A MALE.   :o :o :o :o  And he's cool.   :o :o :o :o  And he can fight better than the girls can.   :o :o :o :o  And he has a personality.   :o :o :o :o  And he doesn't get all stupid when there's moe-moe-harem crap happening.   :o :o :o :o  I wonder how long that will last.  Anyway it turns out he too is related to a pretty famous historical figure, whose female incarnation shows up at the very end.

So I guess I would put this as being closer to Ikkitousen, meaning it has ecchi everywhere but that is not the entire focus of the show.  I was also really surprised that the show was focusing on a guy-- you'd never know he was even in the show if you've ever seen any promotional art for this.   :lol

Guess next up is Star Driver.

I'm watching this too.  It's definitely amusing so far.  The sub group missed that the historical figure whose name the main guy was scribbling out in class had the kanji for "sister" in his name though.

I LOVE how there's a family conversation with the main guy saying he wants to watch some anime and his parents are like "that's what those otaku watch, isn't it?  Don't go polluting your mind with that filth."   :lol

Star Driver was darn good.  Awesome Nakamura block breaking animation during the fight scene.

Story is generic Bones robo show, but the production is that excellent kind of art/animation/music/directing that no one else besides Bones can do anymore.  They're the only studio channeling the quality of 90s top-tier anime.  Which makes sense since Bones = the people who made all the top tier shows in the 90s at Sunrise.

Will check it out when I have time to watch.

Xam'd is good but the story makes no sense and is unsatisfying in the end because of it.
The characters are good, the world is interesting, and it's a fun watch.  Great art/animation too.  The story is really the only place it's lacking, but that's kind of a major place to be lacking >_<

I'll pick it up eventually during a sale.  But I already paid like $7 an ep off PSN when it aired (so like $150?) so I'm not in the mood to spend more cash on it atm.

Yeah, every year I become less hardcore of anime fan.  My current self would slap my 2 years ago self for spending that much renting episodes.

And for the same reason I am refusing to spend $47 on Unicorn ep2.  $60 MSRP is ridiculous for an OAV ep.  It's one thing for a classic feature film like Honneamise or Jin-Roh, but for an ep that (if it's anything like ep1) has pretty crap TV animation outside the mecha action...no way.  First Gundam I'm not gonna buy.  I may have to turn in my Gundam badge.

I got Unicorn vol. 2 for $38 with Right Stuf, I'm fine with that price.

Just finished up Macross Frontier. My thoughts:

1. Moe are responsible for the deaths of millions because of a stupid song. Fuck Ranka in the fucking ear.
2. I loved everything else about it. Melodrama, missiles, music and mecha oh my!.
3. Can't wait to see the compilation movie this coming weekend and then the sequel film sometime next year.
4. TEAM SHERYL MOTHERFUCKERS.

I started watching K-On! in honor of Bebpuuuuuu's birthday.  Watched up to episode 6...it's charming enough, and I LOVE their music teacher.  Total DMC stuff going on there...even a reference to Krauser in the first episode!

The moe-blob art style is kind of annoying, but imma stick with it.

haha, it's a nice show, especially if you like stories about bands (I've never disliked an anime/movie/manga about forming a band).  The jokes can be funny, the animation is great, and some of the band songs are real good.  The characters really grow on you.

Although I should warn that if you make it through S1, S2 stops being a story of a band and becomes a slice of life comedy about nothing outside a few poignant parts.

yeah, that is not what romance in anime needs to be.  The great thing about Gundam is that they know how to handle romance.  They usually end a mech battle with one of them dying, then emotional scarring, then more mech battles.  It's like poetry.

Although I should warn that if you make it through S1, S2 stops being a story of a band and becomes a slice of life comedy about nothing outside a few poignant parts.

yeah, I don't know if Season 2 picks up, but what I've seen of it wasn't very good.  I saw all of Season 1 in about a week.  I have been stuck on episode 6 of Season 2 for over a month.

It gets good toward the end.  Actually has 3 endings.  Ep20, 24, and 26.  Each is a good ep.  But 1-19 is all slice of life with occasionally good jokes and occasionally music and rarely some drama.

If you stopped at ep6, at least ep8 has the next major song by the band.

I finished K-On! and it felt like nothing but slice-of-life stuff, with the band parts only being a minor part of it.  It was mostly のんびり if I can get all weeaboo for a second, to the point that the few serious parts didn't fit in well.  Also what the hell was up with them having multiple beach and Xmas episodes?  It's like they ran out of episode ideas fast.  Fun little series, but Azumanga Daioh is still the reigning champ of this slice-of-life stuff.

Will watch K-On!! next, but may wait since the wife is now interested in it too, but she only watched the first two eps.

My man.

Except I'd probably say that it's a tie between Azumanga Daioh and Aria.

Mr. Gundam, I don't think Star Driver was that bad in that respect.  Sure it was more teen-bopy than the first ep of Raxephon or Eureka Seven, but all Bones robo shows start of with a teen kid, a romance interest, jokes, and then GIANT ROBOT -> BATTLE at the end of the ep.  I don't think calling the show out on having those elements at the start really means much for the show in the long run.  That being said, I do think they are going for more of a Ouran High School x Rahxephon thing with Star Driver.  So I expect it to be fairly silly and light until the later parts.  Kind of like how in Utena they fight every ep but no one ever dies IIRC.  My only disappointment about Star Driver ep1 was that it wasn't as stylish as Ouran or Utena.

I don't really disagree with anything you said.  The beach and xmas eps were there to show passage of time.  One of the things I do like about the show is how it does a good job showing a full high school life from the start of year 1 until the end of year 3.  But the pacing is all odd in the anime.  Ep1-6 = year 1, ep7-12 = year 2, S2 ep1-24 = year 3.  So time slows down a lot in year 3.

Still I liked the music a good deal and as I've said earlier the characters definitely grew on me.  I still think ep12 was the strongest ep in the show and one of my favorite episodes in the last few years.  The part where the band is playing without Yui while she's running and giving a reflection monologue on finding her place over the last year -> monologue ends/song ends runs in, stops turns and does CRAZY GOOD ANIMATION V SIGN (complete with vocal pronunciation of "V!") -> goes up and gives good speech -> best song = soooo good.  It's one of those 10 min sections I see in anime every so often where everything clicks into place and it's just picture perfect, like the last 5-10 mins of Eureka Seven ep26, or the part in Millenium Actress where she gets on the horse and the awesome Susumu song starts and it transitions through films until she's on a bike.  If an anime has a really great 5-10 min segment somewhere, it's ok in my book regardless of the rest of it :)

NYCC stuff:
Gundam Unicorn DVD = 2eps for $30 retail
Gundam Unicorn Blu-ray = 1ep for $60 retail

So much bullshit.  Will wait for Blu-ray box set of all 6 for $99

-Also, K-on! licensed.  4 Blu-ray set; $35 each, or $45 LE with cd; probably just ep1-15 (S1)
-Girl who Lept Through Time Blu-ray coming.
-First Gundam Blu-ray, 2 box sets for all 42 eps
