It actually affects your robot shows.  The bill is super broad and anything that the government finds "morally bad" can be banned.  So anime studios will self-censor their shows to not risk the chance of getting in trouble.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gundam OO or Unicorn would fall under it for some of the war stuff.  Just having a story character raped is enough to get it banned under that bill.

This is the reason why dozens and dozens of manga writers and anime studios are boycotting this.  It's going to affect every manga/show out there.

Berserk is probably super fucked if this passes  :lol

One manga has already been banned [by the publisher] because it features characters wearing school uniforms and the law hasn't even passed yet!

Maybe I responded quickly, but I still find about 98% of modern manga/anime seriously creepy.

You're not wrong there, most anime out there these days is just bad, without even commenting on whether it's creepy or not. But this law really isn't going to fix that and is more likely just going to make everything far worse.

The main problem is that a lot of the anime and manga out there that IS good could easily fall under this bill if it's not properly managed [and it won't be because the main backer of the bill, the governor of Tokyo, is a total clown].

They are creepy.  But all you have to do is look at what happened to the game industry in Japan.

In the 90s to early 00s Japan games were crazy.  You had stuff like Killer 7 or super-violence like Ninja Gaiden.  Shinobi let you cut dudes into many pieces, etc...
Then they got freaked because of bills like this and public outrage and they invented CERO to self-regulate, self-censor.

Now because no one wants a CERO Z, they just cut back on all their games.  Western games these days can have scenes are really disturbing violence or have nudity/sex, but you won't see that in Japanese games anymore because they're all scared of crossing that line and so they all hold back.  The only times you'll have that stuff in a Japanese developed game anymore is when it's developed for the west like Dead Rising or No More Heroes and then they censor it in their home country.

But for anime/manga, almost nothing is made for the west.  So once they starts censoring, there won't be anyone pushing the line and every anime/manga will be pg-13 from now on like Japanese games are.

and what's worse, is that when you get stuck in the pg-13 zone with anime/manga, what does Japan do?  They put in all that moe girl teasing stuff because it's still within pg-13 if they don't show/do anything and it's what sells.  It'll actually make moe worse because you can't have violence/sex/nudity so all you can do to sell your show is have MOE :(

I really don't want this bill to pass but I bet it does because Japanese politics is lolz.  Might get repealed if it does pass though.  There's a lot of opposition.  Apparently everyone is pulling out of the next TAF (the anime festival) in a boycott so they may have to cancel the entire event and that's bad press.

Moe is all over the place because it's what SELLS.  It's what the otaku are buying.  But it really affects anime, I think-- there are still tons and tons and TONS of manga covering all genres and age groups coming out, but with anime, costs are going up, and only the stuff that's profitable -moe moe ugguuuu- is going to get made.  And while there's no doubt that piracy (fansubs) has heavily contributed to this, I can't feel bad for companies that charge $60-$80 for a fucking DVD.

There are still violent Japanese video games and games with plenty of tits n' ass.  I don't see what's really changed.  You are forgetting how games like Resident Evil were censored in Japan and uncensored everywhere else, and that's going back to the 90s.

Anyway, no way that bill will pass.  But I'd be glad to see them further crack down on nasty loli shit.

There aren't violent games on the level that there were during the PS2 era.  No way.  Now we get stuff like Sigma 2 with purple blood or all these games where you fight robots/aliens.

And when you say T&A, you don't mean actual nudity/sex.  Because there is none in Japanese console games despite western games putting it in more and more.

...or you get Ninja Gaiden II, which was nice n' gory.  How about Hokuto No Ken?  And don't say the American version is more violent, because Japan got that version too.  And what about Mad World?

But western games have always tended to be more violent.  Remember Techno Cop?  Narc?  Mortal Kombat?  Doom?

Like as in some nipples?  There are games that are close to everything but that.  Plenty of nudity in Bayonetta.

I don't see some huge prevalence of sex in western console games.  There's what...three Bioware games (and they toned it down even more after ME1) and God Of War (which shows sex off-screen)?   I'd say that fucked-up anime schoolgirl light gun game coming out is still much worse.   :lol

It was some BL manga, so I doubt it's K-On or something like that. Still, it was manga that published before and now, with the law coming out, the publisher freaked out and is banning the author from using high school students/uniforms in her mangas.

And there would have to be more than just uniforms for that to happen.  What kind of comic is it?

Sakigake!! Otokojuku takes place at the fictional academy Otokojuku, founded by WWII hero Edajima Heihachi, where students undergo rigorous physical challenges to become real men, and play an active role in politics, economics, and industry all over Japan and the world. The story focuses on the mysterious first-year Tsurugi Momotaro, a mysterious dropout from a prestigious school, who resolves the problems of the other first years, all while enduring the rigorous training that the malicious teachers impose on him.

To be real men.

Moe needs to be eradicated, but the new bill is way too heavy-handed and would potentially destroy the manga industry.
Unfortunately, the whole moe thing has gotten ridiculously out of hand.

It passed!   :o

http://www.japanprobe.com/2010/12/16/tokyo-assembly-passes-bill-restricting-sale-of-harmful-manga-anime/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+JapanProbe+%28Japan+Probe%29&utm_content=Google+Reader

I'm not one for censorship (even though this bill doesn't seem to be that anyway), but I couldn't help but laugh at this:

Quote
The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly on Wednesday enacted an ordinance that vastly expands a law meant to restrict people younger than 18 from purchasing or flipping through manga depicting rape, sex crimes, incest and “sexually explicit acts and graphic images that are not acceptable morally.” By making previous rules broader and more clear, the Tokyo government will have the authority to deem more manga as “unwholesome books,” which restrict where and how they can be sold.

A group of 10 major Japanese publishers, including Kodansha Ltd., Shueisha Inc. and Kadokawa Group Publishing Co., said they will refuse to take part in the anime fair, which this year attracted more than 100,000 people, a record. The publishers said that the Tokyo government, led by Gov. Shintaro Ishihara, didn’t discuss the ordinance in advance with publishers and artists. Artists said the new rules will stifle their freedom of expression and creativity.

So basically, they can't sell ecchi manga to minors.  Cry me a fucking river.  But I bet it won't last for very long.

Sex and nudity are BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD in anime and manga, but no problem at all for live-action TV!

The problems start to come in here though:

Quote
Bill 156 would require the industry to also regulate "manga, anime, and other images (except for real-life photography)" that "unjustifiably glorify or exaggerate" certain sexual or pseudo sexual acts. Another section of the revised bill would allow the government to directly regulate the above images if the depicted acts are also "considered to be excessively disrupting of social order" such as rape.

It's also incredibly vague as to what a lot of the terms actually mean or include, so it could potentially encompass quite a lot of things.

Want to know what the definition of irony is? The main supporter of this bill, the governor of Tokyo, is known for writing national best-sellers that feature girls being raped and killed by men. His books are available in most bookstores and can be purchased by children.

Yeah, that's the thing. If this were some crusader who was like "DESTROY THE UGUU" then I could understand it, but considering the same guy has penned rape novels...err...yeah

The most amazing thing is how this guy does not give a fuck, saying that Otaku have defective DNA. The comments this guy has made about homosexuals and Chinese (criminal acts are in their DNA!!!) are just so nutty you wonder how he got elected (or why nobody is making a stink over such a dipshit being in office). Go Japan go!

I finished reading Welcome to NHK.

I'm not really sure what to make of it.  I feel like the story deals with a lot of really important problems of modern youths in Japan these days and address everything from psychological pressures, to societal outcasts, family problems to school and work.  But in the end I don't really feel like it said anything about them.  It would bring them up and make some points but then never give any type of solution or insight.  It was interesting that all the characters in the story were really fucked up with huge issues, but the main story with the guy and girl was so neurotic that even in the end it just felt a bit random and easy solution.

I think I liked the stories of the side characters more like his glasses buddy, the tarutaru player, and the school psychologist.  I felt like those stories had more of a point and real ends.

It was an interesting read.  But would've liked a more satisfying conclusion.

B-Gata H Kei does not belong with the rest of those "Mind Poison" awards.   It was good stuff.

Panty & Stocking was >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> everything this year, or should I say, "is" since it's not over until the end of the week.  #2 for me is definitely Soredemo Machi as well.

There's so much stuff I still haven't watched or watched all the way through yet.

I thought Panty Stocking was a lame show, but I know I'm in the minority there so you guys can continue fapping.  The music montages were about 10x better then every other scene in the show.  Why?  Because the dialogue is fucking awful, the "stories" are stupid, and the characters are all 1 dimensional.  The Garterbelt flashback story was probably the best part in the entire show.  They should have done P&S as a music video dvd like Gurren Parallel Works instead of as a TV show.  The animation and art is fantastic, but the show is just mediocre as hell.  All the cursing, sperm, feces, piss, puke seemed to have no point but to try to be COOL OFFENSIVE.  Basically felt like a show written by a jr. high school thug whose trying to rebel.  I find the show more embarrassing to anime than most of the moe/harem genre.

My favorite show this season is Star Driver.  Once you get past that it's an episodic monster of the week show, it's really nicely done.  Good Bones shows always feel like high-class anime.  The script, the direction, the acting, the music, it's all at a level above your common anime.  The show can be about a trash can, but if it's done by good Bones it will be presented so well that it becomes an engaging anime classic about that trash can.  I can't wait for Star Driver to be in Super Robot Wars.  Tauburn has some awesome attacks already and some of the enemy mechs are neat looking with cool attacks.

2nd favorite show is Soredemo Machi wa Matteru.  It's really well directed with great comic writing & timing and the characters are very likeable.  It's funny because the cover image makes it seem like it's this harem fetish show about maids like every other fetish anime out there, but then you watch it and realize the maid stuff has nothing to do with the show besides being a setting for their part-time job.

Otherwise, everything else this season is ok/bad.  Ore Imouto ended with a complete non-ending.  There will be a few more eps on the dvd/blu-ray but who knows if they'll actually make a conclusion.  When you adapt a running manga, you're supposed to find a stopping point and change it a bit to make it feel like a satisfying ending with room to continue like how Berserk, Beck, and countless other manga adaptions have.  Ore Imouto anime was entertaining, but exactly nothing happened the entire plot and in the end it was a completely pointless show that gave minor insight on a niche area of Japan, but didn't really go far enough with it (and the ep where sister girl writes a hentai novel and it gets made into an anime was done so poorly and quickly it felt completely unbelievable whereas it could've been an interesting look at how anime adaptations are made and how much input the original author retains).

But Tatami Galaxy was about 10x better than all of those, so it's still the best show of 2010.

I've accepted that I'm out of touch with the modern anime fan.  They like watching animated women take off their panties, yell fuck a lot, and run around covered in feces while puking.

I'll stick to my intelligent, tactful or mecha shows.

I liked the first season okay, but some of the side characters really grated and the story thrown in at the end wasn't really that great. Is the second season significantly better?

My top ten of 2010

1. Gundam UC episode 1
2. Gundam UC episode 2
3. Star Driver -- Took a while, but it's pretty entertaining.
4. Super Robot War OG The Inspector -- Not intelligent, but just ignore the story and stupid jiggle-service and watch robots beat the hell out of each other.
