Loups=Garous

Basically this is Ghost in the Shell Kids [advanced technology, intrigue, corruption, hacking, action, but with kids], which kind of makes since as it was directed by one of the screenwriters on GITS: SAC. It's a bit animu, but tells an interesting story in an intelligent way for the most part. Animation is decent, but not really exceptional barring a couple of scattered action scenes. The biggest downside is that the villain of the whole thing is so easily spotted from within the first ten minutes. Pretty good, not great.

Trigun: Badlands Rumble

On the one hand, I'm overjoyed that there's an actual new Trigun animation out there. On the other, I can't help but a feel a bit disappointed by the results. There's a reason for this and the biggest reason is that it feels like a fanservice movie [as in made specifically for fans of Trigun], but somehow misses out on a lot of the things that it could have added.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Vash never uses or mentions his arm-gun [or his super-laser arm-gun], there's none of the classic music except for one instance at the climax, nothing is said of Vash's ability to survive numerous injuries, and there's no mention of Knives or Legator or Vash's backstory.
[close]

But, at the same time, the story is clearly designed for Trigun fans because it brings back Wolfwood and retreads ideas from the series [such as Vash's love-and-peace philosophy and some of the problems it creates]. It feels like they took episode 6 of the series and stretched it out to feature length. The movie doesn't develop any of the old characters further than the series did and the new characters are predictable in their roles. Having said that, the movie is still pretty good and really fun to watch. It's a Trigun movie, for God's sake! Looking past the mild disappointment at some aspects, there's really no reason not to watch this.

you know i liked trigun but it was always for reason like "there is a sniper with a 5 meter sniper rifle" or "one of the villain has a sword which double as a shotgun" and "one of the hero carries a cross that double as a gatling gun"

but anyway in a bout of boredom i watched up to episode 10 of soredemo,it's pretty fun i think i could never get sick of the weird voice of the main character

I'll watch the Trigun movie at some point when I have that much time free (same with Haruhi film), but I'm not hyped at all because the Trigun manga turned into such steaming pile of shit by the end.  I loved the original Trigun TV so I read the manga and it was even more awesome and then I kept reading the manga over the years as it kept going and getting worse and worse and worse and by the end I didn't care about any of the stupid sci-fi crap going on and the ending sucked.  Hopefully they never try to animate the entire thing.

The movie is basically an episode from the first half of the TV series stretched to feature length, none of the Knives or the Gung-Ho Guns stuff.

On a different note, 2010 has been a really good year for anime movies. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, Trigun: Badland Rumble, and Loups=Garous all turned out to be, at the very least, pretty good. They were light on pointless animu and fanservice and heavy on, you know, actual quality! You know, like interesting characters, believable drama, and thoughtful writing. It's crazy, I know!

Then there's movies like Redline, The Borrower Arrietty [Ghibli's latest], Welcome to the Space Show, Time of Eve, and Summer Wars getting an American release.

Gundam 00 Movie

You can tell just from seeing Solid Setsuna Fucking Seiei piloting a goddamn Flag that THIS IS IT PEOPLE, GUNDAM GOT REAL.

But really, it was a nice change for a Gundam show till, yup, you guessed it - The typical dumb ass Japanese ending we all love. Ending made dat sexy 00 Qanta absolutely useless; That's just how bad it was.

Still big applause for Sunrise for taking this to the big screen and trying to make Gundam a bit different even if they still couldn't get rid of the usual Gundam baggage (NEWTYPES, SHIPPING WARS, WHY WON'T WE DERP UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER). Perhaps people would have liked it more if the series started straight with this instead of turning 180 degrees here but what the hell, shit was entertaining and that's all I could ask of a Gundam movie; eye candy to the max.

As for the new Gundams (other than poor Qanta) they rocked hard but what's better is that sexy blue Flag. My man Graham Aker is a true BRAVE AMERICAN BRO. And oh, Feldt Grace is such a sexy babe.

Perhaps the biggest thing missing that made me love 00 was the trolling. I miss Ribbons Almark and his SUPERIOR INNOVATA TROLLING. oh well.

Bring on the next Gundam show, Sunrise. My body is ready.

Spoilers
ahead but guy wrote what I pretty much couldn't.

Good read and I agree with him, it's a safe way to end the series even if it pissed some fans. (hey, I got mad at the ending but what I wanted was Qanta going batshit insane like the rest of the Gundams and that wouldn't work here obviously.)

Setsuna piloting a flag was actually pretty lame.  It felt like they were just copying what happened in Endless Waltz, except without any point.  In Endless Waltz, Heero was in his Leo up against the chinaman in his beefed up Altron Gundam and manages to hold his own.  It makes Heero seem like a capable pilot even when he's not piloting a super mobile suit like a Gundam, especially when put up a more powerful opponent that he didn't want to harm.  Unlike in the 00 movie, it wasn't planned since it was an escape and the Gundams were off to be destroyed.  In the 00 movie, they're in a flag while they have two Gundam in perfect condition plus the 00 Raiser w/energy pack that Setsuna rides out in later on.  Instead it's just a scene where he destroys some scrub enemies with a flag we don't see ever again.  Maybe it was there to provide at least one mech against mech battle since the rest is fighting uninteresting pieces of metal...

Yeah, that was the best part of the movie for me just because it was actual mech vs. mech real combat even if it was only grunts getting owned.

Maybe this is why I bailed on Macross F and haven't really given any of the long Macross series a fair shake, heroes shooting one million missiles at 1000 enemies is just not very interesting for me.  I want 1 on 1 or 3 on 1 type battles.

Also the dumbest part of the OO movie not counting the ending which is so dumb it's broken the charts and can't really be compared on a realistic scale is the part with the new INNOVATER guy who looks all evil looking and then the aliens circle his mech into a big cloud ball and you think they're going to turn it evil and take control of it/him and have him fight Setsuna in the movies big 1 on 1 overpowered mecha fight and then...you never see him again  :lol

New animations from Japan!

Rio: Rainbow Gate

Fanservice, magical girl, gambling anime! Or something. The fanservice is at least centered around characters that appear to be adults, but the structure makes it seems like the whole thing was constructed by a marketing committee.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

Magical girls. Shinbou. Shaft. Any questions?

Yumekui Merry

Lots of Dream World shenanigans. The art style is really good in spots, but it's hard to tell whether it'll actually be any good or not. For now, it's one of those shows that interesting enough that you want to watch more, but not good enough that watching it is actually worthwhile.

That what they wanted you to believe before watching the movie - a red herring.

It just showed that even true innovators (especially one as cocky as him) can be fucked - including Setsuna.

They already explained why they didn't want to use Gundams, keeping a low profile etc...

- Kubo has recently put his entire scenario on paper to make the story more exciting. (For the next 10 years)

- He is very proud of the plot he had prepared and began to know how he wants to finish Bleach.
- In the first place, Grimmjow wasn't meant to be an important character, he was to quickly die. But as of now, his existence will eventually matter for the future of the manga.
- The birth of ichigo is surrounded in mystery since it's very special. The readers will be amazed when they eventually learn about it! He is eager to see their reaction.
- The Arrancar arc wasn't originally meant to be long. It's thanks to the craze of the Japanese fans for the Arrancars, without it, the arc would have been shorter.

- Male characters that Kubo prefers are Mayuri and Aizen.
- The end of the Arrancar arc should have been the end of Bleach if it didn't work and if the publisher had asked Kubo to finish the manga quickly. (Like before the start of the SS arc, because Bleach was threatened at that time)

It's really hard to tell a good story in just 10 years, obviously a triumph of storytelling like Bleach needs 20 years to flesh out all the finer points.

Evangelion by way of Gunparade March. It trades in equal parts somber drama, violent action, and fanservice, managing to miss a least some of the pitfalls that most shows from recent years happily leap directly into. The first episode at least shows some desire not to indulge in pointless hijinks and blank-slate male characters, although we'll see whether that willingness continues into future episodes as well. The first episode wasn't great, but it had an interesting premise and a surrounding aura ambition that does give some hope that it could become great. It does have a lot of fanservice, though.

I was about to watch this based on your description and then I saw some pics....all women cast of girl fights with tons of fanservice?  Not my thing :(

I was looking over the Winter slate again and it's really a pretty blah season.  There aren't many new shows and most of them look like crap.  Not even many ep1s I'm willing to give a shot.  Only shows I will try ep1 are: Madoka, Fractale, Gosick, Wandering Boy and of those 4 I'll probably only make it to ep3 on 2 of them :(

Spring can't come soon enough.  Winter is another "get through backlog" season.

Freezing

The first episode is mostly just girls fighting each other, but there's a dynamic mentioned where each girl is partnered with a guy who helps unleash their powers or something.

I checked out Freezing (and will check out IS) just randomly.

Freezing was just embarrassing fanservice.  It's one thing to have panty shots and maid outfits, it's another to be showing full on cartoon breasts and nippiles, and it's absolutely fucking ridiculous to have the episode end how it did.  A naked girl is attacking another girl who has a boy sticking his face in her chest; the camera cuts between a close up of her smothered breasts and her crotch.  The worst part is that you were expecting this kid and the girl to be matched up, but it couldn't prepare you for how low the show would go.  The rule is that these girls that dress up in maid outfits pair up with young boys to fight these monsters  (:gerstmann).  First half of the episode is about the girl butchering other girls--wait, back up for a second; the episode starts with this girl stripping naked and doing a slow sailor moon transformation.  Second half is about the boy and his sister and how he runs in and catches her naked.  So now that we have all type of fetish fanservice present, including incest, you wonder what will happen next? well the episode preview seems to bring in bondage.  If you're into that stuff, maybe check out Freezing.

I think Infinite Stratos is about mecha and I hope that's better  Freezing just reminded me why I don't really watch new anime.

Yeah, the last 30 seconds of the first episode of Freezing was excruciatingly bad. If the rest of the show hadn't be really interesting [minus the insane amount of fanservice], I'd have already given up. Episode 2 is going to be the deal-breaker for me.

well, I see where this is heading :maf

at least the action at the start was good (although it was CG) and there was very little fanservice.  still, another pass.
