Watched the Haruhi movie.  Trolled by dem Haruhi fans again.  Damn you kids!

actually it was a good movie, but it shares the same problem as Haruhi tv in that IT'S FREAKING SLOW.  It's not a 3 hour movie because the story is some epic 3 hour tale.  It's a 3 hour movie because it's a 90 min anime film at Haruhi pacing.  The first 80 mins was tough to stay awake through.  Once it picked up the pacing was fine for the rest.

Also the movie is definitely made to play on emotions connected to events from the series.  Like "oh man they're taking this ONE SCENE from the show and doing so and so with it" and the problem is that it's been like 4-5 years now since I saw some 13ep show I didn't care for and so I don't remember it at all.  I had no idea who some of the characters were like Asakura and I did not recall any of the events discussed in the film.  So yeah, if you don't remember the plots of Haruhi tv it's like playing MGS4 without ever having played MGS1-3; it doesn't have a whole lot of impact that it would to someone who knows the prior stuff.

So yeah, for the Haruhi fanbase it's probably some awesome film, but for someone who didn't get why Haruhi was popular and just thought it was a kind of boring show, the film is just ok.

Nice animation as always from Kyoto animation though.

I thought the series was okay, fun to watch once but I never really got too excited about going back to it and I've ignored season 2 completely, but I still think that the movie was great. And I didn't feel it was overlong either, the first 30-45 minutes were a bit slow but not enough to really bother me. It grabbed me early on and I ended up watching the whole thing in one go because I didn't want to turn it off.

As for the next anime season, I will watch:

Steins;Gate
Moshidora! [IG :rock]
A Channel
C [Noitamina has been pretty solid, although Fractal has been a mess this season]
Nichijou
Sket Dance [been reading the manga recently and it's pretty funny]
Deadman Wonderland
Denpa Onna [my gut reaction is no, but it is Shaft+Shinbou so maybe
Appleseed XIII [maybe]
Tiger & Bunny [maybe]
Fireball Charming [not sure if this is full series or not, but the short episodes were pretty good]

Also, time to fess up, guys, who here is planning on watching 30-sai?

I'm not starting any new shows until all these delayed current season shows finish in the next week or two.  Then I'll take a look at what's out there.

Only thing I'll definitely check out is the PA Works show by Ando who did Sword of the Stranger.  Sure it's a slice of life moe girl show, but damnit stranger was awesome so I want to believe he will give it some great direction (although he also did Canaan which sucked hard).

I liked Haruhi. I even dressed up as Haruhi and danced at AX. But sometimes it really is too super overhyped. But if you can separate it from the horrible following associated with it, it's a good show that can stand on its own.

Onii-chan 12: A simple ending. The last few episodes were clearly filler, but it was expected as the anime had already caught up with the manga early on. Though I was hoping they'd somehow make the anime go beyond the manga, still an enjoyable series as far as onii-chan comedies go.

KoreZon 11/12: Episode 11 made the entire series worth watching. Maid orchestra ensemble ftw 12 was your standard fanservice episode. Overall, really enjoyed the randomness of this series as it kept the show from falling into generic harem/shounen tropes. Wouldn't mind if Deen decides to make a second season at all.

As for next season... plenty of things that interest me, so I'll probably just try them all out as usual until a show fails to catch my interest anymore and I drop it.

As for Hana Saku Iroha... everything about the show/staff sounds good on paper, but the trailers have not been able to interest me at all.

Caught up on some average OAVs.

Noticed that Mazinkaiser SKL ep2 was out and the final ep3 is out in a week so watched ep2.  It was kind of bad.  Not much energy and nothing happened.  Was basically a connector ep between the intro and the end.  Hopefully ep3 rocks, I enjoyed ep1.  They didn't even shout out a single attack in ep2.  No rocket punch or breast fire or rust hurricane or anything :|

Also watched .Hack//Quantum ep1 & 2.  I heard people praise it, but that's probably just because most of the .hack anime has been awful beetrain shit, so of course anything not-beetrain is at least better than that.  The OAV looks nice for sure, some good action animation.  But the story is really mehhhhhhhhh, the all-girl cast is kind of whatever, and there is no .hack music which hurts it a lot since the music style is always one of the best parts of .hack.  No comedy Balmung either to save the day.  It's decently watchable, but the .hack game stories >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> all the .hack animes (although the chibi one was fun and funny).  Wish CC2 would stop pumping out Naruto games and make another full hack series.

Last ep of Fractale & Wandering Son should be out in a few hours.  Yay :)

Suzumiya Haruhi can be appreciated at a deeper level if one is educated in physics/philosophy and mathematics although on the surface it is a science-fiction comedy.
:(

DoraCri 12: Knew this show would be given a crappy end, but watched anyway. Another good series series done in by studio DEEN. Won't somebody think of the children?

^^ = that quote...^^;

Fractale: well, that could've been a lot worse I guess.  Last ep was general anime cliches, rushed ending, and at the end of the day the plot to the show doesn't really make a whole lot of sense; but at least it was an ending.  I dunno what to think about the show overall.  It looked nice and had some good characters and an interesting worldview, but it also had a lot of stereotypical characters and the plot never really knew where it was going and the backbone story is kind of wat.  Oh well.

Yay for more Working! Poplar-tan~

Fractale 11: I'm currently refraining from just straight out refusing to acknowledge that this series even existed. You could already tell the pace of the episode was quick and rushed, but combined with that joke of a revelation, it's like Yamakan just wanted to revel in the viewer's last minute shock and horror. I mean, seriously? Talk about 1 step forward and 2 steps back. On the whole, the show started out with a bunch of really good ideas, and a genuinely unique worldview, but once it realized it was too inadept to actually pull off those ideas successfully it just dragged the exposition along until it could finish everything off with smoke and mirrors to confuse and hope the viewer didn't notice.

You've lost my favor, Yamakan, not even I am willing to defend you anymore. :yuck

On another note, Key just unveiled their opening animation for Rewrite, with awesome music and animation done by WhiteFox (Katanagatari, Utawarerumono, Steins;Gate) :hyper
[youtube=560,345][/youtube]

Oh how I hope when the anime series rolls around they really do boot KyoAni and let WhiteFox handle it. Sick and tired of KyoAni's Key Template Mode.

so, if anyone else reads Genshiken, the author has decided to do a full on continuation series starting May 23rd.

The way it worked before, after Genshiken's original run finished a while back, was an occasional new chapter every so often.  In the past few months, there has been a limited run about the club featuring mostly new characters (Ogiue, Ohno and Madarame are still around).  Now it's going to be expanded into the next series.

A note about the new cast: it's all female now, with one or two exceptions.  Um, one of the boys cross-dresses as a woman and daydreams about Madarame taking advantage of him.

Sticking with the manga topic, Naruto is TERRIBLE

This arc is the worst arc in the entire series of Naruto so far.  I stopped reading the words like 10 chapters ago and just look at the pictures unless Naruto himself is in a page (which happens like once every 5 chapters).

Sorry, but there's no real drama between immortal zombies versions of old characters and people.

And since Naruto sucks so much, apparently that somehow warps the universe to make Bleach interesting again.  It's not great, but this arc is 10x better than the last 2 years of EVERYONE ATTACK AIZEN that the manga was stuck in.  I actually enjoy the 2 mins it takes to read the chapters.

Wandering Son finale was so good!!  What a great show.  Very likely will be the show of 2011.

The art was seriously god-tier.  Absolutely gorgeous.  And the script writer did a fantastic job at taking a huge long running manga and somehow making a satisfying story in only 11/12 episodes.  Great writing and delivery throughout.  Loved the characters, everyone was interesting and had depth to them.  The script was smart and felt somewhat realistic.  Nice music too.  Just a total bang up job in every department.

:thumbs up

I really enjoyed Wandering Son as well, but they did fudge a bit by starting up in suddenly in the middle of the manga when the characters were entering middle school, which I felt was a bit of a cop-out. Plus they also played up Nitori's gender identity disorder more so than in the manga, likely to play to the audiences.

But once you sat down past all of that, it really was a wonderful presentation of the trials and drama of growing up, and that's what I enjoy most about the series- a brilliant coming-of-age story. Add to that an all-star cast, and good music. I also love how they character designs turned out in the anime as well, squeaky shine and all.  :heart

I hope for a second season, but there's not yet enough material in the manga for them to adapt, as they skipped a lot of the material and caught up with it. Hopefully the DVD/BD sales do well enough so that we'll get a sequel in a year's time when there's more material.

Tiger & Bunny

Corporate-sponsored superheroes fight criminals on live TV for points to determine the greatest superhero. The action is tight and impressive, the writing is sharp, the characters are just the right kind of over-the-top, the animation is pretty good though a bit inconsistent in a few instances, and...well...it's pretty awesome.

It's streaming on Hulu and ANN.

Working and Genshiken getting sequels :rock

the 19990203 moe filth shows getting sequels/made :piss2

(I still need to finish K-on s2 to see if I should be happy about a third season.  First season was good.  Have been stuck on the episode 5 of s2 for months now; sucked so far).

You guys should watch Wandering Son now that it's done.  It's cute but in a non-pandering moe way with actual depth and sophistication behind it.

They gonna continue the story though the manga with them going to college  plus another story of Azuza, Ui, etc in the new version of the club. So a season 3 wouldn't be a crazy thought.

IIRC they are swimming in money from it so its time to milk that cow.

Manga, which means S3 eventually.

I'd rather have Kyoani stick to K-on tbh.  It's what they're good at and then other people can handle other shows.

It's kind of weird how the animation in SD 25 had soooooo many nods to Gainax.  Even Samekh looks like Gunbuster if it was in Gurren Lagann.

I'd actually recommend SD ep25 to anyone who isn't planning on watching Star Driver at all.  Just jump straight to ep25 and enjoy what a good mecha action ending should be like.

*edit: oh, apparently Gainax man Imaishii worked on the ep, which explains a lot!

SRW OG2: The Inspectors - Eh, was ok.  It was a pretty faithful adaptation of a good srpg, so as a fan of the game I enjoyed the refresher; especially since OG3 is probably getting announced soon.  As an actual anime...it's pretty average.  The animation is really really bad, even in the final action scenes.  All stills, barely any animation lol.  It's not a terrible show, but it's just an average show that will please fans of the game.

Best part was the music.  Whenever someone did something kickass their game BGM would kick in and a lot of those BGMs are totally awesome.

I really wish Madoka was a little less creepy in the naked little girl transformation scenes kind of way.  It's a show I'd really like to recommend to people because of the story/style, but it's also a show that you gotta be very careful about who you recommend to, so you don't have people thinking your a creepy pedobear.  Especially if they don't know what mahou shoujo genre is and they're like "Why are you watching a show glorifying little girls".

Wandering Son is basically the only thing I can recommend to friends w/gfs and family from 2011 so far.  It's still a little iffy, but it's not creepy.

Although recommending Star Driver 25 to casual anime people who haven't seen ep1-24 didn't go over so well.  "Lots of colors and screaming; made no sense at all"

The story depicts a young boy named Shuichi Nitori who wants to be a girl, and his friend Yoshino Takatsuki, a girl who wants to be a boy.

OK. Back to Index 2 and Star Driver for me.

It's about a bunch of kids who all have issues and how they deal with them as they go through puberty and middle school.  It's definitely different than DtB or Star Driver, but if you like shows like Honey & Clover you'll enjoy it.

Anyhow just watched the last 2 eps of Level E.  Great stuff.  I seriously think Level E was better than HxH and wish he kept writing Level E instead of starting HxH.  He writes really funny scenarios and the cast is great.  I think Craft is my favorite comic character in a while; soooooo loloollol.  Wish there was more than 3 volumes of manga so we could've had more eps!

Actually, I loathed Honey & Clover.

Midget girl got on my nerves.

It's not, which is why it's pretty good. It just pretends to be on the surface until one goes down the rabbit hole.

That's more to do with the show itself though. It's about magical girls. And honestly, I think the show is far more effective if you are someone who has experienced the genre, be it you grew up on Sailor Moon, Nanoha, CCS, whatever, before and can recognize and appreciate the tropes it's twisting. Personally it would not be a show I recommend to someone who has no familiarity with the genre in the first place.

So what new shows have aired this season worth checking ep1?

I think I'll check out Tiger & Bunny, Iroha, X-men, and Steins Gate.  Anything else?

Only a few new shows have aired. Iroha and Tiger & Bunny are far and away the best so far.

Isn't Steins Gate kind of a sequel or something to Chaos Head? Or at least the visual novel was by the same people. I'll probably check it out, but I gotta have my 400+MB encode, yo.

I don't know anything about it other than it was a visual novel that is on X360.  The art looks kind of nice for the game, so wouldn't mind checking out the first ep of the anime.

Iroha and Tiger & Bunny seem very interesting.

X-men seem better compared to the other marvel anime junk.

Should check out Stein soon

S.CRY.ED is back!

For the 10th anniversary it seems like they're doing a movie edit of the show with newly animated scenes like the Gundam movies.

Chances of this being good are probably very low, but if they cut the bad parts from the show and just made it badass Kazuma vs. Ryuhou movie with even more fights newly animated it could be totally badass.  70% of SCRYED was fucking awesome, and 30% kind of sucked.  First 13eps were amazing and last ep was amazing and some eps scattered between were amazing.  They need a SCRYED musou.
