Looks a bit too dark/emo-y for me, but then I realized, that's exactly the crowd they're targeting by picking Evangelion!

Nah, emo would be a big black/purple Eva-01 kimono :P  I think black/red tends to be a really vivid match, and that's why it works here.  Plus walking around dressed as a sea of blood combined with religious imagery is pretty boss.  Takes a lot of guts to do that.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-06-20/list-of-summer-season-2011-tv-anime-in-japan/

Blood-C [Maybe, I wasn't a fan of the other TV series]
Dantalian no Shoka [It's Gainax, so I'll give it a shot]
No. 6 [One of the few that I'm actually excited for]
Sacred Seven [Seems kinda of interesting]
Usagi Drop [noitaminA rarely disappoints]
Yuruyuri [Guilty shame of the season]

This season is looking really weak compared to what's airing right now.

Edit: There's nothing from Shaft this coming season? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Naruto manga has been good for the last few chapters.  It's crazy how when the manga focuses on the LIKEABLE characters like Naruto/Bee/Raikage it's good!

Gundam The Origin anime project coming soon.

Quote
The August issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Gundam Ace magazine is announcing on Saturday that Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga is launching an anime project. The manga is itself a re-imagining of Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise's first Mobile Suit Gundam anime project by the anime's character designer. Yasuhiko is ending the manga in the same August issue.

I've really enjoyed The Origin, so this will be interesting. Movies? OVA? I doubt it's a TV series.

That makes no sense.  Out of all the Gundam manga they could animate, they make the one that is just a retelling of an anime?

Although, I bet it gets the same thing Astray did with animated clips instead of an actual oav/show.  I don't think Sunrise is interested in fully animating Gundam manga, but who knows.

Naruto manga has been good for the last few chapters.  It's crazy how when the manga focuses on the LIKEABLE characters like Naruto/Bee/Raikage it's good!

still feels like stalling until something happens.  it's the manga version of a loading screen.  it's focusing on characters that actually matter, but through mostly useless exposition, and again, literally stalling characters from getting to the action.  I'm just waiting and hoping for payoff that's worth it.  The entire Pain arc was great.

bleach, otoh, has been surprisingly alright

I thought the 1 chapter Bee/Raikage backstory was good.  I really really like Bee.  He's obviously filling Kakashi/Jiraiya's role as the likeable mentor character, but personally I think he's better than both of them.  Rhyming every line >> Pervert jokes.  Plus he's got a cool fighting style.

I'll give you that this week pretty much nothing happened.  But 1 chapter of Naruto standing around doing nothing is still better than any chapter of endless side characters no one cares about doing something ;)

Bleach is ok, I don't mind it but it's just another training arc at the end of the day and they still need to explain why the one dude looks like Aizen 2.0

Exciting times for anime fans these days:

-Ghibli 2010 film The Borrower Arriety is out in Japan (and therefore "elsewhere") w/English subs
-Final OAV of Black Lagoon OAV just came out
-New shows starting in a week
-HELLSING VIII within the next month zomg

I really need to get back to watching anime so I can finish Durarara and Gosick and make some space to watch new stuff!

So out of all the shows from the currently airing season, did anything turn out GREAT and worth watching?

Your mileage will vary, obviously, but there was some good stuff this season:

Steins;Gate - Adult-ish characters, lots of technobabble [only halfway done, though]
Tiger & Bunny - Adult characters, lots of action, pretty good writing
Ano Hi Mita - Drama about loss of childhood innocence and letting go of the [painful] past
Azazel-san - Rude and crude, filled with hideous characters [aside from the two main characters], totally twisted and FUNNY

Denpa Onna! Denpa Onna! E-R-I-O  :heartbeat

C the pacing of the show and then the ending may leave a bitter taste in your mouth. It was a good concept though.

Tiger & Bunny is a solid show if you aren't just looking for the cream of the crop for the season.

Iroha... it started off wonderful and deep, but lately it's starting to fall into numerous standard anime tropes. As it's a 26 episode series, I have no idea whether it will get out of the rut or not in time to redeem the show. But I definitely wouldn't recommend it as a highlight of this season as I might have in the beginning.

Art and animation is still pretty though.

Oh yeah, C is pretty good. It's kinda...strange, though.

Deadman Wonderland started pretty good with the first two episodes, but the next two just weren't good at all. I've gotten behind on it, but still plan to give it a few more episodes.

Caught up on Drifters manga.  If you haven't read it, it's pretty fun, though still early and only runs monthly.  It's basically the ultimate cross-over fighting game manga.  It takes all these famous people from history around the world (Hitler, Jeanne D'Arc, Nobunaga, WW2 fighter pilots, etc...), splits them into two teams on a fantasy planet with dragons and magic and stuff, and they fight to death.  It's by the guy who wrote Hellsing, so the action is great and there's lots of stupid comedy.  If you google you'll find places to read it.

Because you can never be too creepy when it comes to anime...

http://www.jtbbwt.com/entertainmenttour/asukame/index.asp

Quote from: Summary of the "Oogame Asuka Fan Event 'Summer! Seaside? Fan meeting!'" Event
If you have a spare $100 lying around and happen to be in Japan, you can go to a one-day event that involves bowling with Oogame Asuka (the seiyuu for Erio from Denpa Onna) and then dinner with both her and fellow seiyuu Uchida Aya.

The event will take place on 17 July, and will cost 8980 yen for both events, or 6980 yen if you're just attending the dinner. A total of 30 tickets for the full day will be sold, with 60 tickets altogether.

However, the event will not proceed unless at least 40 people sign up. People will meet up at a place to be revealed later in Shibuya and will go from there to the event.

Rewatching Gundam Wing and G Gundam to prepare for Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3.

I haven't seen Gundam Wing since it originally aired on Toonami back in 1999.

First off, Gundam Wing is a very special show for me. I have IMMENSE nostalgia for this show. When it first came on tv, I would watch both timesots (toonami afternoon AND the Midnight Run) every day. I recorded every episode on vhs and watched them with my dad.

Gundam Wing was as big a proponent for making an anime fan as Dragon Ball Z was.

So.

11 years after the fact, I have to say point blank that this show is a low-tier Gundam series. Which is utterly disappointing. It's kinda ruined my nostalgia, but still, I still really feel emotion towards the show.

It's mostly the pilots that drive me crazy, Trowa and Duo aside. Heero is just ridiculous, in an over the top hilarious way, Wufei is a mysonigistic asshole who slaughters entire bases for no reason but for some reason lets one dude go because it'd be "honorable" not to kill him. Quatra, I'm mixed on him.

Still, I'm really enjoying it. Just not as much as I did back in the day. The show still, however, to this day, has my favorite Gundam character designs ever.

G Gundam? G Gundam owns.

I was skimming through some stuff and I've decided there is a very specific type of anime that I enjoy.

Infinite Ryvius, Bakemonogatari, Baccano, Durarara, Kurenai

They all feel really similar.  They're all mainly character/dialogue, but done in fast paced, stylish direction where lines flow off of each other.  It's like hip-hop anime, where the dialogue and editing creates almost a musical rap.

I wonder if there's any other shows in that style that I haven't seen.  I like other types of anime, but man, those types of shows are SO GOOD.

Looking back, I think Eureka 7 and Bakemonogatari are the shows that defined the 2000-2009 decade for me.  I could rewatch those two shows on a yearly basis and never get tired of them.  They're just so well made.

you mean the movies or the show? because the show is a nooo.  the plot isn't that different but the show has stupid dumbness that's mostly cut out for the movies.

0080 is the best for sure.  Turn A is up there too.

A lot of the series are inconsistent.  Like, Gundam X had a weird turn at the end and the last bit was just...what?  G Gundam ajust stopped making once the GODDO GUNDAM was introduced.  Before that it was like Hokuto no Ken in mechs, then he like uses the giant ring around the earth to slingshot himself to the tournament and plays a video game with some school girl and rain is naked and a statue and who is what brother wait what where is the real german guy aw fuck it STEREOTYPE GUNDAMS, FIGHT!

I think

0079 movie trilogy = THE BEST OF THE BEST; so good
Zetaaaaaaa = first half is whiny bitch camille, 2nd half is manly gundam action with most incredible final 10 eps ever
ZZ = Judo is my hero, Haman is my waifu
CCA = Nu GUNDAM FUCK YEAH
F91 = Kind of bad in a super rushed story way, but mechs are nice as is the animation; can't hate on it.  Plus it lead to CREATION OF CROSSBONE so it gets credit
0080 = Nice story
0083 = Dendrobium is rad, same with GP02 lots of great fights; characters/story blow
08th team = Good characters, good animation
SEED = first half is kind of standard, 2nd half with TEAM BROS and BEST FINAL 2-4 EP GUNDAM FINALE OUTSIDE OF ZETA is awesome; Music is damn good too.
Turn A = Great music and so pretty, story is kind of nothing and it's sloooow
Turn X = Garrod is the man, Gundam X Divider & DX are hot designs with their sexy satellite cannon; Good worldview; Frost Brothers are punks but super super rushed in the ending.
Wing = don't remember
EW = nice animation!  But don't remember
G = Amazing in every way and slow, repetitive and boring at the same time.  Domon is the best character ever.
DESTINY = LOL
Gundam OO = First season SETSUNA & LOCK-ON ARE BROS; Second season WTF IS THIS
Gundam OO Movie = Not even good enough to be LOL
V = Still need to watch this
Unicorn = Good action/animation/mecha designs so far; plot/battles are lolz already

0079 Movie trilogy - The best Gundam, bar none. Has every single core thing about why Gundam OWNS in it. Fantastic story, great motivations, , the only bad thing about this is the newtype shit at the end of the story.

Zeta - First half is AWFUL. Horrible, unlikable one-dimensional characters, poor motivations (one example off the top of my head: Oh hey, Quattro won't fuck me? Guess I better defect! :spin), cartoony villains (I don't like the other side to be "villains" in Gundam really, and if that, I don't like them to be so hilariously evil), poor plot. The shining light of this series are mecha/character designs which are fantastic and the last 10-15 episodes, which are excellent.

ZZ - First half is AWFUL, second half is amazing. Prefer it to Zeta.

CCA - Shit. Horrible annoying child characters, shit story, ruined Char (the best character in all of Gundam) forever.

F91 - I've...never actually seen this. ???

0080 - Fantastic characters, realistic motivations, it's nice to see the war on the civilian side of things, and what's more there are no newtypes in this, which makes the story even better. The best overall story in the Gundam franchise but not my favorite. Ending is amazing. One of my favorites in the franchise, probably number 2.

0083 - Great characters and character interaction, great character motivations, amazing mecha design. One of my favorites.

08th MS Team - Fantastic characters and character interaction, great story, Gundam in the jungle is awesome and refreshing. Another one of my favorites.

Victory - Better than Zeta and ZZ, that's all I can say.

G Gundam - Fucking awesome characters, great motivations, hilarious story, TEQUILA GUNDAM, really creative setting and mecha designs, hilarious battles. One of my favorites!

Wing - Solid characters (Zechs is the best Char who's not Char in the franchise, making him my second favorite character in the franchise :spin ), best character designs in the franchise, poor character motivation, poor plot, AWESOME mech design. Cheesy, but I still really like it but that's probably nostalgia.

Endless Waltz - Shit, shit, shit. I hate this movie. Awesome mech designs, though.

Turn A - The most refreshing Gundam tv series with arguably the best worldview in the franchise. Fantastic characters, great war, great character motivations, mecha designs are refreshing (it's interesting to see a bunch of fighter planes try to take on mechs). Also has one of the best Char's. My favorite Gundam tv series.

Gundam X - This show OWNS, great characters, great worldview, great story and plot. Not as refreshing as Turn A, but it's still a step up.

Seed - I really like this show. Despite the fact that it contains the most overpowered Gundams and characters in the franchise, it has a really nice set up. The whole childhood friends at war angle is played extremely well, and casualty after casualty and the build up form one of the better Gundam tv series despite its flaws. I'd rather watch this than Zeta any day of the week.

Seed Destiny - somebody kill me

00 - first season is a shoe-in for being almost the best overall Gundam tv series. Season 2 is a shoe-in as being among the worst Gundam tv series. I like to imagine part 2 doesn't exist.

00 movie - Never seen.

Unicorn - story is LOL but I really like the characters, okay mech designs though.

F91 has beautiful animation, but not much else going for it. That's what happens when you script a TV series and then are forced to turn it into a movie.

It does lay the groundwork for Crossbone, though.

Never seen Patlabor. Which do I start with?

Start with the TV series. It's mostly lighthearted and fun, and features an ongoing storyline that's introduced, but not wrapped up, in the 47-episode run. Go with the 16-episode OVA next. It's...fairly over-the-top. Most episodes are played for laughs, but it does wrap up the ongoing storyline from the TV series.

Next go with the 7-episode OVA, even though it was actually released first. It's a bit more serious and a bit more political and is more closely related to the movies. Then watch the 3 movies in order. The first is a mix of lighthearted and serious. The second is a lot more serious and way more political. The third focuses on different characters and is a serious, dramatic take on the giant-monster genre with some detective stuff mixed in.

So at the end of the day, another con where Bakemonogatari wasn't announced for US release

In other news has anyone checked out some of the new July stuff?  I watched Sacred Seven and was disappointed that it is no Geass/Scryed/Gundam Sunrise; it's pumped to the max with ridiculous, but lacks any actual directing talent to make it stupidly fun.  Instead it's just super lame and why are they sticking maid characters in all my animes :(

Waiting for No.6 so I can get my hot yaoi Bones sex on  :hyper

My Blu-ray copy of the 00 movie should be here this week. Don't care if it's crap, I'm supporting all Gundam Blu-ray releases in North America.

There hasn't been anything from the Summer season yet that's really worth watching. A one or two "decent" shows, but that's it.
