Ok, despite the fact that the source material (aka, the PLOTLINE) was a complete mess with all kinds of ridiculous "mysteries", unbelievable events, and some really really rushed plotpoints/arcs, I think Bones did a darn good job with Gosick. To me it's an testament that if you have a really good director who makes every scene, no matter how stupid the source is, play out with the same degree of film quality art direction, animation, music, editing, pacing, acting, and scripting that an AAA show would get, you still get an engaging high quality movie experience even if at the end of the day the story is simply bad.
Gosick's plot with the ministry of occult vs. science in kingdom/WW scenario was basically BAD, the Cordelia/Brian Roscoe/Victorique plot was decent but incredibly rushed. But the characters and the kujo/victorique romance plot was pretty well done and was strong enough to carry the show.
The last ep and a half was done with the same quality and tact that I expect out of my "anime for adults" Bones animation and was really satisfying. While some of the eps were bad, I'm really glad I watched Gosick from start to finish as there just aren't many well directed animes anymore. I watched Penguin Drum and Idolmaster and Tiger & Bunny and Sacred Seven and none of them have good direction; some neat stuff to them? Sure. But the feature film, reserved, well-paced, non-moe derp derp, style is just so rare these days that it's a pleasure to watch a show that actually comes off as being made by professionals and not the anime versions of Suda51 (aka, good crazy ideas, but lacking actual skill).
At least I still have a few eps of Durararara left, which is another well directed show. After that I dunno where I'm going to get my non-moe derp derp, non-pandering, non-ultra stupid voilence, professional adult anime. Hopefully No.6 ep1 is good, since Bones and Brains Base seem to be the only studios doing that kind of show anymore.
