Went back and watched Solid State Society again, for the first time since I watched it when it originally aired on the Scifi Channel back in 2007. It was actually better than I remember it being and I enjoyed it more the second time. But there are two major problems: it feels like there's some character development missing and the ending was rushed and little awkward. Both of those probably would have been rectified through a 26-episode series rather than a 2-hour movie. But, anyway, it's basically more of the same of what was so good about the 2 series, so I won't complain too much.

I enjoyed it, but it did feel rushed and it would've worked well as the overlying arch for another season. For a film, it is really lacking a big action set piece.

Yeah, there's that too. It's got some good action scenes here and there, but no big explosive ordeal where they blow half the budget. So, basically, it comes back to how it would have been better as a 26-episode series.

Anyhow here's my list of favorite shows in the last forever, but these are my tastes so they don't always match with others:

-Eureka Seven
-Baccano
-Durarara ep1-12.5
-Bakemonogatari

-Fullmetal Alchemist TV1
-Paradise Kiss
-Bokura Ga Ita
-Fruits Basket
-The Tatami Galaxy
-FLCL
-Evangelion
-Sword of the Stranger
-Millenium Actress
-Gundam Movie Trilogy
-Air TV
-Voices from a Distant Star
-5cm/Second
-The Vision of Escaflowne
-Cowboy Bebop
-Cowboy Bebop movie
-Karekano
-Infinite Ryvius
-SCRYED
-Planetes
-Jin-Roh
-GiTS SAC
-GiTS SAC 2nd GIG
-All Ghibli movies besides Howl's, Gedo Senki, and The Cat Returns
-Wandering Son
-Kurenai
-Black Lagoon

I'm sure I'm missing a lot of 90s classic shows, but I tend to forget things that are old.  These are generally 2000s shows that are all really good and classic in their own ways.  I bolded the stuff from the last year or two that might be easier to find.

The Tatami Galaxy it is then.

The rest of the stuff on my list is more serious drama or drama w/comedy and not light comedy wacky.  You've already seen Azumanga, Cromartie, Soredemo Machi wa matteriru, right?  Trying to think of other good slapstick comedies.

Detective Conan is great if you don't watch every episode.  The movies are more detailed, self-contained cases and I'd recommend those.  The third (of fourteen?) is the best.

Monster is really really good.  It's 74 episodes, which sounds long, it frequently has new elements to draw you into the story without feeling like unrelated questions.  A lot of that time is spent building the characters too.  Again, it sounds long, but rarely wastes your time.

I like it because several people help Conan lie to her.  One 'what if' OVA took place in the future where Conan grew into the age he was as Shinichi.  At that point, Rain, as dumb as she is, finally figures it out.  And she is really dumb, because at least half a dozen unrelated people figured out who Conan is.  Yet this dumb broad occasionally realizes this kid looks exactly like a younger Shinichi.  Until Hattori or Kid or Conan on drugs or an altered voice phone call convinces her that Shinichi is still working on the longest case ever.

The reason why he doesn't tell her doesn't even make sense.  It's because the mysterious organization of alcoholic beverages will kill him because he witnessed them do something or something.  But as Conan he has directed interfered with their plans on multiple occasions.

so yeah it's a cartoon for children filled with heinous acts of murder and deceit.  This man killed himself by freezing a knife in a cube of ice and fell backwards on it.  When the ice melts, evidence of suicide will be lost and he could frame it on his ex-wife, who cheated on him.  This mystery is...wait oh lol Genta just stepped on poop--what a klutz!

Howl's is the worst thing Miyazaki has done.  He tried to adapt a book into a short running time and totally failed to do so.  It's so condensed that there's almost no development and things just happen happen happen and then conveniently everything literally falls into perfect place and THE END.  The animation and stuff is great, but the movie sucks.  I think I like Earthsea better and Earthsea is pretty weak.

Ponyo was a step back in the right direction for Miyazaki though, so I think he should just stay away from adapting novels.  Earthsea was also an adaptation and a mess because of being unable to transition it to a 90 min film.

Anyhow, I haven't watched any anime for a week or two.  I think I'm going to have to skip everything because I just don't have time to follow shows :X  Or maybe I'll watch Usagi Drop 3 this week.

so is the Hellsing OVA dead or what?

seems like a longer than usual wait between episodes.

it's always totally worth the wait, but this is ridiculous.

edit: Nevermind, volume 8 may have just come out two days ago in Japan, according to ANN.  hell yeah.

edit 2: it did come out...found a raw torrent.  I think I'll watch it, not too hard of a story to follow.

The extended wait was on account of budget issues and shifting production studios, I think.

Hellsing VIII was certainly something.

Cool shit happens, but they have no money left at all.  It's really a miracle these final OAVs are going to get released.  So they spend the little they have on animating all the cool ass posing, and there's lots of it.  But the actual action scenes are  :'(  And there's like NO MUSIC in the ep, so the epic scenes feel kind of weird and weakened.

After IX/X finally come out I'll sit down and read the manga in a day to enjoy the craziness in superior quality.

OAVs used to be made because they had higher budgets than TV shows and had amazing animation.

Now OAVs are made because they don't have the budget to do TV episodes.

Except Unicorn.  Unicorn is an OAV because they like to make gundam fans suffer.

New Gundam AGE information:

Quote
Mobile Suit Gundam AGE Character Voice Actors:
Flit Asuno: Yuuko Sanpei
Asem Asuno: Yuka Nishigaki
Kio Asuno: Komatsu Mikako
Gundam AGE: Hiroshi Kamiya
Emily Armond: Minako Kotobuki
Ace Now: Yuuki Kaji
Grudech Aynor: Hiroki Touchi
Miles Aloi: Kitanishi Junko

A bit of new info for the upcoming Gundam AGE series. The list of voice actors are confirmed.  But what is interesting here is that Gundam AGE is also voiced.  And there were rumors going around that the Gundam in the series can talk... Perhaps it is like 'J.A.R.V.I.S.', the personal artificial intelligence computer program for Tony Stark (Iron Man movies), which assisted him to construct & maintain the function of the Iron Man suit.  Or perhaps, Gundam AGE will be a sentient computerized being to be sort of like a teacher for the main protagonists.  Hardcore Gundam fans might already have a gripe with the idea of a talking Gundam.
But not to worry... Level-5 boss Akihiro Hino addressed chatter that Gundam mechas will talk in MS Gundam AGE, calling it a "misunderstanding" that the mecha can speak. According Hino, the series will be kid friendly, but won't deviate from traditional Gundam conventions. So no talking giant mechas!
The Akihiro Hino penned Gundam Age anime debuts this fall as Level-5 is working on an Age title.

Shows I'm watching:

No.6 - first ep was slow, rest have been good; will stick with it
Penguin Drum - Kind of average, but great production values and some great scenes each ep make it worth following at least for now
Sacred Seven - dumb action fun
Usagi Drop - Cute but it's pretty boring after the initial intro.  Was going to drop it at ep4 but ep4 ended on MAJOR CLIFFHANGER so I guess I'll at least watch ep5 and then probably drop it

I watched Wonderful Days and Blood: The Last Vampire over the last few days. Wonderful Days was okay, just kinda average and unremarkable, but nothing too bad. I wouldn't bother watching it unless you've already seen every good movie in existence. Blood was pretty crappy. Bad animation, bad art, bad story, bad voice acting, bad everything. Avoid.

I juuuuuuust finished watching the new Ghibli adaptation of The Borrowers, Arietty. I was stunned to see it wasn't a Hayao movie; the director has the same touch.

Blood was pretty crappy. Bad animation, bad art, bad story, bad voice acting, bad everything. Avoid.

Err...what?

Yeah, that one two minute scene isn't too bad. It's mostly the facial animation when the characters are talking that's really bad. Look at this shit

Someone please tell Japan that 25 year's old psychopath loli are not cool.

At least our blonde hero got some balls now and his blade armor is wild. Plus Girghe is the man.

the anime industry makes no sense

There are new Berserk and Hunter x Hunter anime.  Both are long running manga with unfinished anime adaptations.  You'd think they would continue where each series left off, but no.  Both are retelling the first arc.  At least with FMA Brotherhood the story was different since it was based on the manga.  It will before the chimera arc of HxH gets animated, and since Berserk isn't even a series.

that said, I wouldn't mind a Rurouni Kenshin reboot series to tell the entire revenge/Enishi arc and remove all the bad filler.

and to be fair, HxH reboot will be the best anime series since Level E.

actually, next season doesn't look half bad.  New Lupin series, second series of Working, Last Exile follow up.
