Good price.  Will buy for my HD mecha action collection.

I'm tempted, but what's the ratio of mecha to fabulousness? I watched the first couple episodes but then forgot about it.

Every ep is 15 mins of character development scenes on top of an episodic story and then 5 min mecha action time at the end.

Then the last ep is all mecha, all the time.

There's a plot, but it's very minimal.  Mostly just a character show + mecha action.  I really liked the characters and the mecha was good so it was winning situation for me.

Recently started watching a bit of anime on Netflix.  Any suggestions for some good anime available on netflix instant streaming?

Whatever is bolded is highly suggested.

Gankustsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
Deathnote
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Baccano!
Monster
The Slayers

Samurai Champloo
Moribito
Mushi-shi
Now and Then Here and There
Last Exile
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu
FLCL

Eden of the East
Gurren Lagann
Ponyo
Golgo 13
Fruits Basket
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro - note: Miyazaki's directorial debut
Robotech - note:  this includes the supbar crappy seasons that are from random anime
Macross Plus

Tales from Earthsea

I'd say start with something like Gankutsuoh, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Baccano, or Monster.

Bright's voice change is really noticeable.

But really while that looks pretty awesome, what makes me  :'( is that all the mecha animation is beautiful 2d animation and then the AWESOME GIANT MOBILE ARMOR is....cell-shaded CG :(  It sticks out a lot and is a shame because I'd love to see it in 2d animation to the detail of all the other mecha.

Tales of Eathsea was an okay movie, maybe a bit better than that if you're a fan of the books.  I mean...I understand the knocks against it and putting it up against Ghibli's other movies certainly isn't doing it any favors, but it was still enjoyable. Plus, it's got a pretty good dub [courtesy of Timothy Dalton and Willem Dafoe].

haven't read the books so that might be why the ending didn't really make sense to me, but yeah, it's a fun adventure movie, but hard to recommend over anything else Ghibli. Or at least what else of their catalog I've seen.

The end part I didn't get:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Cornered, Cob strangles Therru to death. However, she does not die, and instead becomes a dragon, thus killing Cob and rescuing Arren from the collapsing tower that Cob destroyed to prevent Arren from advancing."

Therru [also called Tehanu] was revealed to be a dragon in the fourth book in the series, though she chooses to remain in her human form rather than return to being a dragon. It doesn't do a very good job of setting this up in the movie, though it may not have been set up particularly well in the book either [I haven't read it in ages and it's honestly not very good, the weakest of the four]. There's some speculation that she was one of dragons fighting in the prologue, but there's nothing in the movie to say either way. It's sloppy writing, basically.

Equally sloppy is the prince and his motivations for patricide, it's just not developed enough. The story's there, of Arren's light and dark side, but, again, there just isn't enough there for it to feel like anything other than sloppy writing.

The first two Earthsea books are really good, some of my favorites in the fantasy genre. The third book is okay, a bit of a step down. The fourth book really isn't very good at all, too much of a departure from the tone and style of the first three [which kind of makes sense considering out came out 18 years after the third book].

Hunter X Hunter reboot means the series can't be all bad!

for some reason they did away with Kite being Gon's reason to enter the Hunter exam.  Doesn't make sense considering Kite becomes really important later on.  I guess kids can't remember a character who doesn't show up again for two to three years real world time.

I don't know about any new series, but HxH, Bakuman and Working all have new seasons so I have somethings to watch.  Bakuman gets pretty shitty for this entire arc, though, the side characters (hiramaru) mostly save it and the author eventually realizes this in the manga by making the boring main character second stage to gag manga antics of hiramaru.

I'll check out Gundam AGE too

I don't like how shows are either kiddie or for perverts.  Apparently the new hunter x hunter series is toning down the violence and nature of characters, like the beheadings in pedophile tendencies.  I guess I'd rather that than Gon getting his power for breast milk or traveling with 999 y/o witches trapped in a 11 y/o's scantly clad body.

I'm probably not watching anything new this season unless it has mecha.  Too much old stuff to catch up on as is and don't have time for anime much anymore.

I'm slowly working through Sacred Seven.  It's the generic kind of sunrise action that's my comfort anime.  Fun.

Hunter X Hunter manga :bow2

possibly the most important character in the series is fully revealed as a small part of a larger group.  no fanfare or anything.  other shit manga like Naruto or Bleach would dedicate an arc to this shit.  Togashi's like, he's here, but we have more important shit to do so lets move on with the story.

CG and more realistic designs look weird, but that's cool.  I remember another Cyborg 009 thing a while back with women.  This has the original characters, just in a contemporary setting.  Can't read and tell if it's a reboot or another story.

seems like a reboot

Bakemonogatari is basically a stage play.  It's entirely dialogue-driven witty conversation skits.  The visual style and music is just a plus.  If you watch anime for anything besides dialogue, it's not going to be for you.  If you think sharp dialogue >>>> everything else, then it's one of the best anime ever.

Persona 4 The Animation episode 1

It's Persona 4 in anime form, plain and simple. The story, the characters, the music, the style, it's all ripped straight from Persona 4. For anyone who's played the game, I guess the appeal would basically be getting a cliffnotes version of the game that you just sit down and watch, because it really doesn't seem to add anything. The main problem is the PC, who now is a speaking character. He just doesn't work in anime form, since his sole purpose in the game is to be nothing more than a player avatar. Compared to other anime this season? Basically a masterpiece.

Evangelion 2.22: You Can [Not] Advance

I can't even being to imagine how things are going to go in the next two movies if the series is already this absolutely insane and epic at just the halfway point. It took the series 19 episodes to get this far into the story, leaving two whole movies to cover just to the last 7 episodes. EoE kind of set the high water mark for mind-rape, but it feels like they may be ramping up this four-part movie series for something even beyond that, which my brain literally can't comprehend.

So, yeah, good stuff. Looking forward to the next movie, due out in Fall 2012.

Just watched the final episode of Kaiji S2. The ending was awesome.

As a whole, I think The Bog arc has been the worst out of the entire series so far, but it was still good. Just not as good as anything else they've done. I loved Ichijou though, he's a great character and I hope he keeps appearing throughout the series. I'll probably start reading the manga now, because a Kaiji S3 probably isn't going to happen. Isn't Madhouse in dire straits? They'll probably want to avoid niche series that don't really make them any money. :(

:bow best series ever

The soundtrack from S2 was really good too, but it wasn't as strong as the first series. Can't fault them for that though, "Wish" is practically impossible to top.

There's a pretty easy workaround to watch it.  www.sonicwallbypass.info

Just got done watching the first episode. Pretty standard formulaic pilot episode for Gundam, but it's very shonen in nature, much more so than past series. I thought it was fun. Really nice English translation by Sunrise, and even throwing in a Gunpla commercial at the end was cool.

So it's pretty obvious the UE are humans, and they don't want anyone to know it as they destroyed the downed Garfan.

I thought having Gundam be a historical mobile weapon to be pretty cool. The one in the painting sure does look like the RX-78... I know this isn't Universal Century, but it was still a nice nod.

Either that or they're trying to work out a North America/European TV deal.
