I feel bad we're all beating up on Mr. Gundam's other favorite mecha franchise :(

I don't dislike Macross, I'm just not a big fan of dogfighting/planes.  I don't play Ace Combat, I don't watch Top Gun every few years, I only like Yukikaze for the  :-*

For me mech shows are all about story. I don't care if they're riding in planes or mechs. The reason I like Gundam is because of the story and characters. I could give two fucks about mechs. If Gundam had no mechs,  and it was just space cruiser battles I'd still watch it and love it.

Macross Plus is bad to me because I don't like the story or characters, they're all obnoxious dicks.

No worries man. I can take it.  :)

I loved Macross Frontier as it gave off a Escaflowne-style sopa opera vibe, along with the kick ass Yoko Kanno music and awesome mecha action.

So what is Mecha-Bore's thoughts on Argentosoma? I watched the first volume ages ago but it never really clicked. Decided to pick it up today since I saw the whole series for $12.50, figured it's probably worth at least that.

Watched the Trigun movie, was ok.  I mean it's better than your usual Naruto/Bleach/OP/Inuyasha movie that typically comes from a successful series and is bad, but I don't think it's a great anime film like Sword of the Stranger or even Summer Wars.  It's just sort of a fun little popcorn movie.  Story is typical, action is ok.  I think what I liked the most was just that they got the animation to look really close to the TV series despite the show being hand-drawn and this being digital.  Also it's been forever but I thought Wolfwood was a lot cooler character than he was in the movie.

the new Hunter X Hunter anime showcases why Gon is the best protagonist.  instead of whining because his dad abandoned him to be a hunter, his rational is: hunter must have a lot of fun if dad left me to become one

Gonna blow through several shows really quick here:

Ika Musume season 2

It's more of the same, which is great because I really loved the first season. First episode of season 2 was a little weak, but the next three have just been great. No complaints from me.

Working season 2

First two episodes were a bit flat, just couldn't get into them, but episode 3 was really great and reminded me of what I liked about the first season. Episode 4 was pretty good too, the show looks to be on track now.

Ben-to

This reminded me, in a way, of Baka to Test. It should be absolutely terrible, but somehow it manages to be really fun and funny. Basically, this is a show about people who get into very violent battles on half-price food at convenience stores. Sounds strange? It is, but the show takes this very seriously, even going so far as to lay out a dearth of rules and terms that add a strategic angle to something inherently goofy. It's also relatively light on fanservice.

Persona 4

It's like watching someone play the game, but with most of the fighting cut out. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the first two episodes felt really flat, in large part because the main character just has no personality compared to the other characters. Episode 3 was the best so far and it really felt like the show might be on a upswing as it begins to carve out its own path. I'll give it a few more episodes to see if it can keep improving. Pretty good animation though, especially with the detail on the characters.

UN-GO

As a pure detective show it's just no good. Mysteries are solved far too quickly without enough setup and the introduction of supernatrual elements stretches credibility. However, there's an undercurrent that becomes more prominent in episode 2 about the control of information and how the government uses information to establish its own narrative with each mystery, covering up the truth for a convenient lie, that's becoming very intriguing and by far the more interesting aspect of the show. The ultimate success of UN-GO will rely on whether that aspect remains so.

I'll leave Guilty Crown, Mirai Nikki, and Last Exile for when I get watch past the first episode. Overall, it's been a really good season so far.

In addition to the new stuff, I've also been watching this show called Sexy Commando. It's one of the funniest animes I've ever seen because it's just so ridiculous and it totally knows it. The animation is total rubbish, but it comes across as being a stylistic choice [like Cromartie High School] and it actually lends to the show's humor more often than not. The episodes are only about 8 minutes long and that feels just right.

http://myanimelist.net/anime/582/Sexy_Commando_Gaiden:_Sugoiyo!!_Masaru-san

By the way, it's directed by the guy who did Animation Runner Kuromi, Elf Princess Rane, Fruits Basket, Gag Manga Biyori, Jubei Chan, Tsukikage Ran, and Kodocha.

God, I hate anime. Okay, here we go: Guilty Crown. It's basically a challenge from the producer to see how much garbage you'll willing to put up with if they pair it with great animation, thoughtful worldbuilding, and an interesting conflict between idealistic terrorists and a super-corrupt government. All that sounds pretty awesome and it is. Here's where the garbage comes in. The main character? Bland, boring, annoying. He's cut from the same cloth as Shinji Ikari, but without the deep psychological wounds to make things interesting. He pairs up with a girl who barely wears any clothes and shoots weapons out of her chest, also she's cut from the same cloth as Rei Ayanami [emotionless, falls in love with boring main character for no discernible reason]. Then the show throws in lots of cheap fanservice sandwiched between scenes of innocent civilians being gunned down like animals. There's also an excitable loli who wears a skintight bodysuit and is the subject of 50% of the cheap fanservice [gotta bring in those otaku dollars!]. For good measure, they also throw in the bog standard insane villain who loves killing people because it's fun and it just plain evil for evil's sake, don't need any logic or reasoning here nope!

The really bad thing is that this is one of the noitaminA shows and it's produced by Production IG.

Mardock Scramble

Nothing cleanses the palette quite like some dark, serious, intelligent, cyberpunk scifi, which is exactly what Mardock Scramble is. It remind me of the old OVAs from 80's, short and to the point with lots of nudity and violence along the way. But it does this in a way that doesn't feel like its unnecessary or pandering, by virtue of taking it's plot very seriously and dealing with some pretty heavy issues. Animation-wise it looks great, barring some CG here and there that's a bit jarring. Stylistically it's dark, dark, dark, but that fits quite well. My only complaint is that is needed to have been twice as long [60 minutes just isn't enough] and it ends on a huge cliffhanger. The second movie came out last month in Japan, so hopefully an R1 DVD isn't too far away.

It does a nice job of feeling the void left by the unfortunate absence of new Ghost in the Shell in recent years.

Guilty Crown episode 03

"He called me stupid...is it fine for people to ignore how easily hurt I might be?"

Just shoot me. Just pull out a gun and just shoot me in the face. The main character said that. The main character who, in the previous episode, went on a rampage with a super-weapon and destroyed several mechs and then helped to wipe out an entire squad of soldiers. Good Lord Almight, Japan, crawl out of your own cracks and actually make something worth watching for once.

Do Japanese men have self-esteem issues?

I don't know, maybe, but otaku [the target audience of 99.9999999999% of anime being produced] certainly seem to.

What's really disappointing is that Guilty Crown is produced by Production IG [Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East] and written by Ichiro Okouchi and Yoshino Hiroyuki [Code Geass]. Winning Combination? Nope.

Edit: I'm gonna pull out my Patlabor OVA tapes and watch some REAL anime tonight.

I don't care about the council stuff.  I've never found the Hunter Guild interesting.

However the Killua story that started a chapter ago is neat and has me interested in the manga again.

Cyber City Oedo 808

This OVA trilogy is so ridiculous, I love it. It's cyberpunk to the core, with lots of violence, swearing [if you're watching the dub, which you should], and lots of dark cityscapes. The stories are ridiculous, the bad guys are broad caricatures, and the good guys are actually criminals fighting crime in order to win their early parole from prison. It basically couldn't be any more awesome.

First time I checked this thread in a while... Has anyone seen the first Kaiji movie? It looked pretty bad so I never bothered looking into it (don't know if it's been subbed either). I don't think I've ever seen a live-action version of an anime/manga that didn't look bad though.

GREAT animation, pretty good direction and music.

but holy hell Banagher is THE WORST WHINIEST gundam lead in forever and between him whining crying whining and newtype DRAMAAAAA and distinguished mentally-challenged story plot-twists...all the content of the show basically does it's best to try to undo the fact it's a good looking gundam with nice designs and a real budget!

I dunno, I find it frustratingly unsatisfying.  Wish Unicorn was less emo and more just a kick ass Gundam with awesome animation and good mecha designs.  Stick the kid from AGE in Unicorn as the pilot and the show would be much better!
