Miyamoto blames industry slump on game quality

While analysts spent 2009 backing away from any notion that the gaming business was "recession proof," one historically shrewd industry watcher is bucking the conventional wisdom. In an interview with The Economist published yesterday, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto blamed the industry's lower sales for the year not on financial worries, but on the games themselves.

Nintendo has finally come around to online gaming, but Miyamoto is taking a pass on it for now.
"The fact that in 2009 we were not able to sell more than we did in 2008 was simply that in comparison, we were not able to produce fun enough products," Miyamoto said through an interpreter. "There are always ups and downs in this business. As long as we create unique and unprecedented experiences with video games, there should be nothing to worry about."

Miyamoto also talked about online gaming in the interview, explaining that Nintendo was late to the party because the company wanted "to take sufficient time to make it a proper business." The developer also acknowledged that it's not just his employer's stance that has kept him from making online-focused games to date.

"I think it is obvious that when everyone is connected online, there will be enormous opportunity for me to create something really unique," Miyamoto said. "But my job is to try to entertain as many people as possible, and I see all Wii owners as the audience. Of course, we have Mario Kart, which can be played online by multiple people. So we are gradually expanding the experiences using the Internet, but my own personal focus is to try to entertain people, even if they are not connected to the Internet. That is my first priority."

And I blame the game quality slump on Nintendo.

What about next gen systems and increased development time/expenses required to make games forcing my Jappa devs to retreat to handhelds?

I don't think that's they only thing causing that shift.  Handhelds are just more popular in Japan, hence more developer support, but I'm no expert.

Yeah, of course, I'm just saying that Nintendo's not the only one at "fault" (if anyone or really, anything is).

I was just saying, and yeah, handhelds are getting good games but there's no mistaking that Japanese developers have less of a presence this gen, which is disappointing given my tastes.

I wasn't talking about quality, only piggybacking on Himuro statement on why Japanese developers are moving to handhelds.

@Iconoclast: Don't worry about trolling Nintendo.  It's the official forum sport :lol

Hey, at least Nintendo themselves said that they were putting out lackluster games.

Did he say "we" as in "Nintendo"? :smug

Eh NSMBwii was really good.  Its arguably the only thing holding the wii up in japan atm.  If media create sales are to be believed.

"good god he's senile"
If anything he's humble.  He could easily blame everything except their output but chooses to view it a problem they can remedy.  Him and Iwata are pretty smart guys, its just that they aren't into counterprogramming.  Instead of filling in the genre gaps left by third parties with in house software, theyd rather pursue the next wii noun franchise.

Well, I will agree with Miyamoto that 2009 was a pretty weak year overall (for all parties), I liked 08 much better at least, and this year has already been kicking some ass, with even more ass-kicking on the way.

I thought 2009 was a pretty weak year too until I realized we got Street Fighter 4, Demon's Souls, BlazBlue, Mushihime Futari, Devil Survivor, Trials HD, Forza 3, and Tekken 6. Pretty underwhelming otherwise. Still much better than 2006 at least.

Granted, four of those games are 2008 (or earlier) arcade ports, but work with me here.

Wait, Miyamoto admits that Nintendo didn't do a good job making enough 'fun' games, and you guys are attacking him for...?

I still think 2009 is one of the best years on record.  I played more great games than any other year since the HD systems launched.

? Not one of the posts above are attacking Miyamoto ?

Its good that Shiggy has fessed up and admitted that 1st party output has been poop, now he just needs to put his money where his mouth is and actually START DEVELOPING SOME GAMES. GC era Nintendo was a lot better, you'd at least get 1 AAA 1st party game a year.
