Microsoft still deserves to get monkey pissed on, but this is cool. 16GB is more than what the fucking 20GB HD lets you use.

But you can't use this for game installs?

Aren't those the only things that take up HD space really?

This is all part of the plan for the 360 slim.  I bet the 360 slim won't let you use regular memory units, instead you'll have USB ports.

The Arcade games are getting a lot bigger too. If I can't save those, installs, or DLC, then this is worthless.

I thought they already said you can use it for game installs? You just need to have the disc in the system of course.

Quote from: joystiq
Once the update occurs, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC and Title Updates to the storage device. "USB storage devices may, however, have far greater memory capacity than MUs (at the date of writing, the largest MU is 512 MB), and may therefore support previously infeasible operations-such as installation of a full disc-based title." That's right, you can also store disc-based games to the USB device; however, it will require the disc to be in the tray for authentication, identical to the current functionality.

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/18/xbox-360-gaining-usb-storage-support-in-2010-update/

Then again I guess this isn't straight from MS, but I'd  be surprised if you couldn't have games installed on them.

I don't think anybody knows yet although if it did game installs its weird that Microsoft didn't mention it in the information they released today which makes me skeptical it will.

If it does game installs, that's an amazing update. If it doesn't then I could give a crap about the update.

They should be slower, limited by the shitty speeds of USB 2.0, if it was an internal flash drive that would be different. I'm wondering if the drives will have to be formatted as FAT which means you won't be able to have single files on there greater than ~4gig which would make most games unable to be installed on the drive.

Nearly all small external flash drives (usb keys) are formatted as FAT.

Someone in the GAF thread said that even that one company that cracked the 360 and enabled SD cards on it a year or so ago was capped at 16GB. There is some built-in bottleneck.

Anyone tried this yet? Does it actually give you 16GB or does it wind up being a useable 10GB with the 360 formatting?

It only takes away 512MB and they tack it on after you choose how much you want to reserve.

I used a SanDisk Cruzer and it says it says it meets performance recommendations.

Do I have to transfer my gamer profile over to the USB stick, or can I install what I want to the stick while keeping my main profile on the HDD?

I have an unapproved small 4gb one currently which gives you the slow performance warning although I'll eventually get a 16GB "approved" one.

Seems to work fine otherwise though. Speed isn't too bad. There is a thread over on GAF where people have done a few time comparisons versus dvd, and hard drive.

I have a 500 gig western digital that I use for wii games, 400 some gigs dedicated to a WBFS parition and the remaining 80 is unformatted.  I know that if I plug it in to the 360 and select customize, I can make 16 of those 80 gigs allocated for the 360, but it gives me a message saying the 360 needs to format it.  Will that erase all of my wii games or just format the remaining 80 gigs thats unformatted?

I will never be worried for space.  Besides, I used to only have 100 gigs dedicated to it with the rest being for laptop backups, but I won a 1TB hard drive a few months ago.  I use the 1TB one for my laptop now and use the 500 gig one exclusively for my Wii, for the most part.  I'd like to dedicate 16 gigs of it, though, to the 360.

I have an external drive that is like 75 gb and it just carved out the available space it needed. You may want to ask your question over at GAF though since there are more people over there.

Banned.

And it told me it needed to format the entire device, saying it didn't recognize the format of the hdd.  Screw it, I'm moving all my wii games to my 1 TB for now, configuring the 500 gig'er for the 360, and reformatting the available space back to WBFS and moving the wii games back.  Goodbye, night ahead.

All set now with the 16 gigs of storage. Obviously it would be much better if Microsoft just made the cap size unlimited but I'll take what I can get.

Like a lot of people I had a 20 gig unit and was always out of space and always deleting and installing games. Now between my original hard drive and the extra I have room for 3 full installs or 2 installs and 4 gigs of XBLA stuff.

Eventually I'll get a 16gb flash unit that is faster but for now I'm fine with the speed and reducing how loud the 360 is by playing off installed games.

Eventually I'll get a 16gb flash unit that is faster but for now I'm fine with the speed and reducing how loud the 360 is by playing off installed games.

Yeah, the lessened noise is what is really attractive in this whole picture.

I bought a 120GB HDD last April and have managed to fill all but 18GB with game installs and Rock Band DLC. My GTA IV folder is 10GB+ and I've got each of the RB games installed, plus I exported the RB1 songs to play in RB2. The available space, it goes away so fast.

16GB is not going to make a world of difference to me, but since I play at work and with friends, having the gamertag on a USB and even keeping some XBLA games on it is kind of exciting. I'm especially happy that I'm not going to have to replace my 512KB MU, which lately has been unable to reliable connect.

haha, Brandnew is only back cuz he was banned at GAF?

Anyway on GAF they are saying that if you put your tag on a flash drive it lessens the uberload of your games library. Haven't tried it yet.
