Xbox #3 down for the count
« on: March 27, 2010, 09:52:44 PM »
They said it's a free repair, and when I dragged out the box from the last repair I realised I bought the console in 2006. So appears I'm getting a free repair outside the three years, although the last repair was June 2007 so maybe that's the date they are using.

No 360 gaming over Easter. :(  Although in a strange twist I bought my first Wii game in ages (Boom Blox 2) so it should arrive next week and tide me over.

I don't think so, manufacture date was 15 May 2006.  I think that was still the first hardware iteration.

I suspect power supply differences will prevent me getting a newer one.

I'd be pretty confident buying one nowadays.  I did consider going to get a HDMI one, but I'll see what they send back first.

You've always got the three year warranty as backup, and repairs outside the three years even seem a possibility as per my experience.

It's good that they'll repair it out of warranty, but really RRoD is an inherent problem in their system, to the point where it should have been handled as a recall. Extended warranty just means you have more time before sending it in, but there should have been a right for anyone who purchased it to have it swapped for a safer board.

My 4th just died on Sunday and this time it's out of warranty so I have to pony up if I want another one.....which I will.....begrudgingly.  I swear if this one flames out, I'll switch over to PS3 exclusively.  I'll miss XBL and the controller but this shit is unacceptable.

And honestly, if it wasn't for BC2 I'd just as soon wait for the slim to come out but my BC2 addiction knows no bounds.

Lame my 360 is dying. It's getting those little black dots on screen and crashing with an error message. Unfortunately this one is out of warranty. This will make for my 3rd 360.

I'm pretty sure my refurb 360 is going to die within a few months.  It is making the exact same noises that my old one was.  Maybe it can survive until the slim comes out.

Yeah I'm surprised this one lasted as long as it did. It made the weirdest noises and they were only getting weirder recently. I had a launch unit originally and they fixed/refurbished that one a couple of years ago.

I did the towel thing to play for tonight. Its not under warranty and I'm not sending it in to get fixed so I'll just ruin this one I suppose until I feel like buying a new one.

I got my refurb back today - it's nice and quiet. :elephant  Stoney, if it RRODs you might be able to send it in for free repairs.  Mine's nearly four years old and they didn't seem to care.

Took me two days to get out of under his mommas fat ass.

You better start pumpin' iron instead of mommas - my momma weighs less than 100 pounds.

Bought an Arcade and slapped my 120GB HD on the thing.  Whisper quiet....seriously.  This has got to be the quietest 360 on the planet.  It's PS3-esque.

I'm going to call MS and have them send me a coffin for my old RROD system.  I guess when I get the refurbed system back I can hook it up downstairs.

Researching the issue last night, they seem to be replacing old Xenon's with a weird revision called Opus - 65 nm CPU, 90 nm GPU, latest heatsinks, and no HDMI.  So it's probably well worth sending old Xenon's in.

http://beta.ivancover.com/wiki/index.php/Xbox_360_Revisions#Opus

Although mine has a "Service Date" on the back of 2009-09-02 I don't think mine is an Opus.  Judging from the mobo it's a Xenon with a Zephyr GPU heatsink extension and original Xenon/Zephyr CPU heatsink.

At least it's quiet and the DVD drive is a Lite On which I think is the quietest.

Which PS3 model are you talking about?

I just found out recently that my OG 60gb PS3 is actually hella noisy.  I've got the PS3 connected to my PC monitor because I was transferring some files from it to the PC.  The PS3 is whisper quiet during idle but once a game gets started, it's even louder than my PC with 3 videocards.

Yeah, my OG 60GB is definitely louder than my 360 playing installed games on the 360. It's comparable when running a game off the disc though.

Though my PS3 can throw some hot air, my 360 is barely warm in the back after an hour of playing.

I've got an 80gig, the one that's BC with PS2 games.  My first PS3, the fan would kick in and sound almost just as loud as some of my previous 360s but ever since I got this one back it's been pretty quiet, at least until the thing gets too hot.  I had some long sessions with the GOW collection and GOW3 and it would get a little noisy after awhile but nothing too bad imo.

But so far I'm happy with how quiet the new 360 is.  I was getting a clacking noise from the HD last night but I removed it and put it back in and it seemed to fix the problem.
