People on gaf are saying it's an April Fools Joke.  Probably out of Hope and Denial.

Fuck Sony if this is true.

Yes, but it's a completely anti-consumer way of doing it.  Instead of patching holes, they just remove major features from a system people paid up to $600 for.

It doesn't matter who used it.

If 5 people in the world used it and paid SIX HUNDRED US DOLLARS for a PS3 that let them install Linux then it's bullshit that Sony gets to fuck them over because they are scared of the pirates.  It's not like the system is anywhere close to being fully pirateable.  This is just Sony being scared little sissies and fucking over people for no good reason.

Also as someone on gaf said, Kuturagi's vision of the PS3 has been torn apart bit by bit to the modern PS3.  Kuturagi had big plans and was future-thinking, but the current Sony is close-minded and just wants to be like MS and Nintendo.

I loved some of the plans they first devised with the PS3, but at the time, it was too expensive.  Remember when it had a network hub, multiple video outputs, and all that stuff?  It was loaded!

They should NOT be removing features that are already present, though.  That is pure bullshit.

Hopefully they don't touch PS2 compatibility.

I was making fun, but there are people on gaf defending it so I gots to give Bepbo my axe in this. The acceptance of straight up anti-consumer bullshit in the video game industry is disgusting. Journos acting like piracy is child rape and justifying absurd shit like the Ubi DRM is far beyond any offense a pirate could do.  :maf

The same people will all be defending when they take out PS2 bc from launch models.  "oh well I don't use it anyhow", "phhhfff everyone has a slim by now, so it doesn't matter"

I hate all 4 fanbases over there.

Am I on crack for thinking BC will get patched in with a firmware update when the actual unit sales of PS2 fall off enough?

it depends, some are using that reasoning for its return.

Sony supposedly will answer the popular requests on their share site (PS2 emulation being in 2nd place) snd say if it can happen or not

Also reading that thread, I see a lot of junior members with no tact who act like 13 year old gamefaqs posters.
Which obviously, is just what gaf needed more of.  That place is sadly going to become more and more of a fanboy wars forum as they keep letting people in and start advertising on tv.

I remember when it used to be about actually discussion of the gaming industry!

Also, what is this whole "advertising on the TV" thing?! is that real?

I haven't read the thread for a few days, but they were basically trying to make an ad and then air it on tv advertising the forum using google's cheap tv ad program thingy.  I'm not too sure on the details.

about gaf: biggest problem is that everyone comes off as a shill now, myself included (for Just Cause 2).  chances are the closest you'll get to unfiltered opinions are in unrelated threads or months after the game came out.  The period before and around release is either a bunch of high praise or trolling.  it's not thing new but the ratio and frequency of the trolls or shills is just much greater.  the trolls aren't even clever anymore.  it's a lot of passive aggressive insincere ignorance bullshit.

about linux on ps3:  from what I understand there are two groups that really use it.  you have the people who use it like a computer, like the military or something, and the four people nerdy enough to put linux on their PS3.  chances are the people using it as a computer won't care that they can't play games on the same hardware and the second group probably have linux running on dozens of other hardware in their rank bedroom.  I'm guessing the reason they're taking linux out is the potential for piracy.  it is always lame when a company will remove features, but I don't think it actually matters for most everyone.  It's affecting those people who want to run linux AND wand to stay current with PS3 games and features.

though, if they get rid of my PS2 BC, I'd probably rage hard.  I shouldn't judge the minority who use smaller forgotten features of the PS3.

it would be hilarious if they released a firmware upgrade that disabled the memory card reader shit under that little hood.  there is a compact flash slot!

 :-[

I had Linux on my PS3 from day one. In fact it's the sole reason I chose a PS3 over a 360.

Funny thing is PS3 has been hacked and further iterations (of the hack) will only make it easier now that 'pretentious linux nerds' see a challenge in cracking the PS3's hypervisor for hardware access. I never really used linux on my PS3 much and I never bothered putting it back on after my PS3 ylod'd. However it was a fucking godsend for people who wanted to learn how to program on the cell (scientific reasons) and couldn't afford the minimum entry fee of ~10k which was previously programmers only options before PS3 was released.

I think that even mentioning Kuturagi name in Sony is no no.PS3 has eaten all PS1 and PS2 profits, loss is like $1 billion greater than MS Xbox+360,RROD included. And they are still losing money on the hardware...

So everything that can be cut, will be cut.And there is probably some fine print that allows them to do that.
As for the defenders,no surprise there, hive has to be protected at all cost.

You mean back in 2002?  GAF has been shitty for years now.  I've got 3 alt accounts over there and don't bother with any of them.

Regarding PS3 BC - if they take it out via a firmware update I'll be completely pissed.  I can understand them wanting to offer PS2 games over PSN but don't take away a feature from their early adopters that payed out their asses for their system.

Most consumers meaning 99.9% percent of them won't care about a feature that practically no one used. That being said it is lame to remove functionality from any product you shipped.  That is bs and there is no remotely good defense for it

As much as I'd like to bash Sony, this is really not a big deal.  The tiny amount of system memory makes the PS3 a pretty crappy computer.  Anyone that really needs to work on Linux would be better off using an average PC.

Don't Update
A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

It would be funny if Sony panic move does exact opposite

Before this-PS3=zero piracy
After this-PS3=piracy fest

Doing this is going to ask for piracy. It'll be forced back in. That's why they added this in the first place.
Also, their share.blog isn't approving any ideas asking to keep the OtherOS option.

But I am erring on the side of hoax, simply because of the version number.
The current one I believe is 3.15. Jumping to 3.21 for a trivial feature change is not the most logical decision. (Of course they've made those before)

A lot of schools and other places bought a LOT of PS3s to use just for dev purposes. Granted they'll probably never get updated for games or blu-ray movies, so this is no skin off their back.

Not sure how legit is this, but it looks like somebody managed to get refund from Amazon

Quote
I've sent Amazon a mail asking what their position is on any attempt to exercise my rights under EU law regarding this reduction of functionality is. Will be interesting to see what their response is, even though at the moment it's just a hypothetical question.

Quote

As promised, an update from Amazon. After getting one not-particularly-helpful response relating to their 30-day guarantee, I fed it back again, and got the following reply:

"Thank you for contacting Customer Services at Amazon.co.uk by e-mail.

"I will need to investigate this issue with the appropriate department further.

"We will contact you again by April 04, 2010 with an update.

"Thank you for your patience and for bringing this matter to our attention."

So reading it between the lines they're taking it to their lawyers and/or Sony, and will get back to us. :smileyhappy:

"We are writing to confirm that we have processed your refund in the amount of £84.00 for your Order 666-5327564-4432412.

This refund is for the following item(s):

Item: Sony PlayStation 3 Console (60GB Premium Version)

Here is a video demoing my "custom firmware". I would have added something showing off the new features of 3.21, but oh wait, there aren't any.

This can be installed without having to open up your PS3, just by restoring a custom generated PUP file, but only from 3.15 or previous. It's possible this CFW will also work on the slim to actually *enable* OtherOS; I'll know when my infectus gets here.

No release date yet, use the proxy hack to play online with 3.15

Note to the people who removed OtherOS, you are potentially turning 100000+ legit users into "hackers." There was a huge(20x) traffic spike to this blog after the announcement of 3.21. If I had ads on this site I guess I'd be thanking you.
