do sonic fans even know what they want anymore? That looked like any 2D sonic game. A bunch of dumb ass loops, the occasional enemy in an inconvenient spot to take away your rings, and some generally boring platforming when you aren't running through some loops at 100mph.
This is why sonic always lost at recess.
Early sonic games get that rap, but they really weren't like that. Well most of the time, sonic 2 overdid the hold right to win stuff (chemical plant zone is atrocious for this), but sonic 1 and sonic 3 had genuinely interesting platforming you had to pay attention to. Those games made it so you had to monitor your momentum and speed up or slow down to avoid hazards or pass inclines. Rolling back down a hill because you didn't have the necessary speed was in many ways a punishment. I kinda wish the spin dash was never introduced to the franchise. The shuttle loops in sonic 1 and the half pipes in spring yard required -as I said- using the correct momentum.
What genesis sonic had in common with mario games is that you are essentially playing a puzzle game that required an understanding of the respective game's physics properties.
in other words, you just don't know what to look for, mang!
