Okay, so I know a few folks started on this game when the PS3 version came out.  I'm playing it on 360.

So I started the game and holy shit, coming down from the sci-fi high that was Mass Effect 2 and getting this was really ridiculous.

The game starts off pretty badass.  The intro is total nuclear war between Jack Nicholson and some Saddam lookalike.  Then they realized "whups, we fucked up" so after destroying the entire planet they make peace.

Then they focus on going into outer space and that's where the uguu starts.  The hero is this dode named EDGE MAVERICK, and he is some type of astronaut along with his friend with the metal skirt, Reimi.

So the uguu starts in full-force when he talks via webcam with Welch, who is the HYPER ENTHUSIASTIC loli support engineer person for the mission.  He also chats with his childhood rival who has been promoted to captain ahead of him.  Pretty sure I'm going to have to fight/kill this dude in the near future since that's always what happens in this type of game, plus he's dressed all in red, "bad guy" colors.

Long story short, the mission goes FUBAR and all the spaceships crashland on an alien planet filled with bugs that are impervious to the railguns they brought along for defense.  This gives the game designers the excuse to implement the melee combat the SO series has always had, no matter how inappropriate this is for a sci-fi setting.

TO BE CONTINUED...

Absolutely horrible game.  Wanted it to be good, but man, it just wasn't to be.  The ~uguu~ is just too strong.  None of those morons would ever fit in any military or exploration teams.  At least previous games involved civilian characters who simply got wrapped up in the story against their will.  You didn't expect them to have training.  Here, though?  It just all seems ridiculous to the extreme.

sadly, i am still enjoying -- and i use that word loosely -- this game, just because of the flashy combat and the crafting. i won't say it's a good game, and i really do appreciate the text recaps when you skip cutscenes, but for some reason, i feel obligated to try to complete it. i kinda feel the same way about ff13, which is almost as awful

i also really like the lengthy dungeon grinds :'(

So anyway, after EDGE MAVERICK kills the space bugs with a sword, the captain calls up the space station asking for help.  "You know, this multi-trillion dollar space exploration project has just gone to shit, our ships have all crashed on the planet, we need some help or we are all going to die!"

Then this fat guy with an exciting mustache comes onscreen and says "Not my problem."  Yes, the most important project in mankind's history...and all your ships have crashed onto an alien planet but exciting mustache fat guy just wants you to deal with it on your own.  Then he makes an ominous statement about how he will contact THEM to help you out, which makes the captain (who also has an exciting mustache) very nervous.

So then the captain tells EDGE MAVERICK and Reimi, the metal-skirt girl, to go search for the other crashed ships.  The adventure begins...

I'm kinda new to 360 so I haven't played many JRPGs really this gen (I have but oldschool ones on my PC, none of this new shit) as PS3 seemed to avoid them like the plague until recently. He's got ToV, Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey (which I'm currently playing through) pretty sure I want to play ToV more than TLR, but then again I am just bein nice.

3732!! :-[ Had my 360 for ~3 months, took me a while to get into it too. I've always hated MS but 360 is pretty damned good. Bought it for the few games I couldn't play on PS3 and to play with friends who don't have PS3's (pretty much everyone who actually plays online that I know). Haven't been online since I was ~2k as 360 doesn't have wireless and at my new place my 10 mtre ethernet cable aint long enough  :( Got a 25 metre one in the mail.

Why?

Demi has like 200k or something ridiculous like that, right?

There are a few easy cheevos I'm missing on some games that I just don't want to bother with 'cause they're annoying - find all the flags or feathers in the AC games? Waste of my time.  Find all the lightseeds in Prince of Persia? Screw that.

So I went out in search of the other crashed ships.  Lots of giant bugs to fight everywhere.  I'm playing on 'Galaxy', which is the toughest accessible mode available from the start (at least in the 360 version).  It didn't give me much trouble but EDGE MAVERICK died a couple of times.

I'd gotten used to Mass Effect 2 where you could save pretty much anywhere, anytime.  Here, of course, as in any other Japanese RPG, you have to wait for save points.  And the save points don't actually restore your HP/MP.

I finally found the crashed ship by the beach, with only one dying dude lying on the shore.  EDGE MAVERICK leaned over and picked him up, and the dying dude told him something had gone terribly wrong after they'd picked up a meteor fragment and brought it onboard.  The dying dude had to actually blow up the ship!

At this point Edge actually started vigorously shaking the dying guy asking him why he had to blow the ship up!? :lol

The dude tells Edge and Reimi to be careful and croaks, and then some sort of flying ship shows up and an effete green-haired elf steps out.  He starts asking questions when suddenly a monster pops out of the water and everyone has to scramble to defeat it.

After the monster is dead, the green-haired elf introduces himself, yada yada, new party member, he's an alien.  I figure, cool, now I get to hitch a ride on his ship back to home base.  But nooo, Edge wants to keep exploring some more, so we have to walk back to the crash site.

And of course, the game doesn't regenerate your HP/MP after a huge boss fight so I have to trudge back through a cavern to find a save point with my team half dead.

I think I might replay this pretty soon on hard mode. I'd like to see if I can withstand the pain of 1000'ing this game some day. 250+ hours :rofl

I know everyone here hates Final Fantasy XIII, but that is definitely one of the things it does well.  You can retry immediately after any battle and be returned to the field just before you initiated the battle.  Wild Arms 5 ALMOST did this, but actually would just restart the battle which meant that any menu adjustment that might be necessary to win the battle was impossible.  The XIII method should be used more often, I think.

Removing MP and healing all part members post battle is also a great move (again, similar to WA5).

So then I got back to the base...the elf aliens (called Eldarians) have set up a pre-fab base that is pretty much light years ahead of anything the filthy backward humans have.  These guys were apparently the THEM that the fat elegantly mustached dude was talking about.

Head Eldarian dode makes green-haired dode join your party permanently.  Then an eldarian badass dode who is probably one of the game's bad guys (dressed like Kuja from FFIX but with a lot of scars because that shows what a badass he is, even if he looks like a woman) has a meeting with the head eldarian dode.

I wander around, buy some supplies, then the captain gives me a nice present - the (miraculously repaired) ship that crashed like an hour ago.  It's been fitted with Eldarian technology, and apparently wandering around in a forest and cave proved to the captain that you could handle captaining a space ship so he gives the whole kit 'n caboodle to EDGE MAVERICK, Reimi, and Faize.

I must say, the first Mass Effect handled the whole "captain giving the spaceship over to you" way better than this. It just seems so random here. :lol

That part started out with so much promise. The way it ended? Horrible. This was basically the point where I started wondering why I was still playing it. After a few more hours of cutscenes, I finally stopped and haven't gone back since.

You're still on Aeos, right? That and the final area were the high points of the game for me. At that point, I thought the game was decent enough--nothing special, but not completely terrible either. Too bad almost everything after it is a complete free fall in quality.

Is there a world map in this or is it like the newest FFs where the dungeons pretty much are the world map?

There's a world map, kinda. There are segments where you have to run across a GIANT stretch of land to the next town or dungeon. The map is so needlessly huge that tri-Ace decided to give you a sprint ability, which looks hilariously stupid.

I will say that the battle system in SO4 is pretty nice - the different beats, blindsiding enemies, the bonus board.  It's all really cool.

The bonus board is a decent concept, but since it resets every time you turn the game off, it fucking sucks. I recommend getting 6-10% of the mana/health refilling gems so you can use your artes more often. It also means you don't have to rely on the blindside ability as much; it may be cool now, but after you see that same sliding animation 800 times, you'll be sick of it too.

You can turn off the blindside animation in the settings...

The sprinting ability is ridiculous, you go really really fast for a couple of seconds and then stop and you have to press the button again. :lol

Started playing this game again after doing like 80 hours of Gundam Musou 2.

What has happened thus far:

- Went to this medieval-type planet where a spaceship had crash-landed spreading some type of infection that was turning people into stone.  I think this was meant to be some sort of callback to the first Star Ocean, which started with the same 'illness that transforms people to stone' thing, but it felt so fucking generic and lame.  Ended up taking along a little six-year-old girl into my party.  Animu to the extreme.

- Followed the trail of the spaceship that had crash-landed and went to this space station inhabited by some alien lizards who wanted to conquer/exterminate everybody; proceeded to exterminate them with extreme prejudice.  Met a cyborg dude who has a terrible voice actor and insists on calling the main character "Mr. Edge."  He joined my party.

- Fell into some type of black hole which took me back into 1950s and landed near Area 51.  Amurrican soldiers impounded my spaceship, strip-searched my first officer (probably gangbanged her too, you see her lying naked on a bed), and then asked me to give them the power source to my spaceship so they wouldn't have to rely on energy sources that would pollute the Earth.  The distinguished mentally-challenged main character actually FELL FOR THIS and gave them the energy crystal.  The insane lead scientist proceeded to put it into some sort of reactor which destroyed the entire fucking planet.

....

Let that sink in.  The main character in this game is actually responsible for the destruction of the entire planet Earth and the utter annihilation of billions of lives.  FUCKING EL OH EL.

I rescued a catgirl (who looks about 12 but dresses like a fucking stripper) and took her into my party, traveled back to the future and saw that the Earth in the future was still intact, which meant I'd actually destroyed an alternate dimension's Earth.  The hilarious thing is that the other characters in the party actually thought this should make the lead character feel better.

"Hey dude, no worries, the Earth you destroyed was just an alternate dimension, cheer up!" That's basically how they deal with the situation.  The lead character is still "depressed" though I doubt this will last for more than another hour of gameplay, with this game being as distinguished mentally-challenged as it is.

uh i don't have a 360 so i might as well be saying something really stupid
but aren't star ocean 4 achievements akin to stuff like "DEFEAT THE SUPER HIDDEN BOSS THAT DEFEATS YOU IN 2 SECONDS" and stuff like "GET 100% ITEM CATALOGUE"
?

if i'm not mistaken you have to finish the game on the hardest difficulty which in turns mean finishing the game three time since that's what you need to do to unlock the hardest difficulty

have fun ichirou :lol

yeah the achievements for this game are ridiculous. you have to beat it on every difficulty and collect all battle trophies with every character to 1000 it. RPG achievements are always shit though; they never take any skill, just grinding.
