The thing is, that was always a real career plan until recent years. My friend making $57k was a psych major. Another friend making a great salary was a philosophy major. A third friend who was making more than both of them was an art history major. Lucky for them, they were able to get in with decent companies before the recession, and they've proven their worth since then.

A business degree is great, but for an entry-level office job, will there really be any tangible difference between a business major and a sociology major? Hell no. Maybe the business guy will have used Excel a bit more, but it will take all of one night of studying for the soc major to catch up.

True story: the department I work in has stopped interviewing business school candidates. Having trekked through the hardly rigorous or useful coursework myself, I agree with that decision. Business schools should require at least basic calculus and more rigorous computer competency, both of which are not standard across programs. I would agree with GS's statement about sociology vs. business, the difference is probably negligable in terms of skill set.

What department do you work in, and what skills are necessary to perform an entry-level job there?

I work on a modelling team where we model consumption data and project sales volumes (in a nutshell), which requires extensive knowledge of mathematics as well as some programming.

How far into calculus would you have to go to be able to do that? Also, what programming languages?

I ask because I'm thinking of trying to retrain for a more technical field at some point in the future.

A full calculus background (typically I, II, and III) and Differential Equations helps. We obviously use Econometrics for modelling, I think there is a good text by Greene if interested. Also, economics knowledge is required/helpful. Send me a pm and I can recommend you texts on all of the above, or just grab the open coursework from MIT's website.

-Gym junkies

I find it pretty addicting to go to the gym, mixing up routines and trying out different machines... I'd spend a lot more time there if I didn't have to work all the time.

The stuff I don't get about gym junkies boils down to do these things:
- looking fit rather than being bit
- trying to look huge
since you're neither of those things I wouldn't say you're a gym junkie

Guns are for pussies.

Naw, guns are frickin' cool.

But only for those of us authorized by law to use them. :P

Why not?  Handguns can hurt people just as well as a rifle, especially at a distance of 15 ft.  Plus they are easier to store.

hahahahahahahahahahaha no.

How often do cops shoot rifles? :smug

Up until about six months before I joined, every single officer in the history of the RCMP was trained and qualified on rifles.

The more insightful question is "what is the greatest fear of a cop who patrols a rural area?"

And the answer is "responding to a call and driving up the looong open driveway from the highway to the house, and being worried about the possibility of the unstable fucker with a rifle taking me out before I can even think about drawing my sidearm"

Or, put another way, to change your statement of "Handguns can hurt people just as well as a rifle, especially at a distance of 15 ft." to make it truthful:

"The only chance in Satan's fiery hell that someone with a handgun has a chance of winning an encounter with someone with a rifle, is if they are within a distance of 15ft."  And even then, the guy with the rifle only needs to scored one shot to win, while the guy with the handgun might have to unload half a mag before the other guy drops.

dude, there's only 3 ways to deal with your shit:

1) Ignore you.  This is an increasingly popular option.
2) Deflect via flirty gay subtext.  Effective, but it gets tiring.
3) Beat the shit out of your annoying schtick.

So don't get all teary-eyed just because people get tired of picking option 1 and 2.

In danger of some real talk, the proliferation of guns is very serious issue and in an ideal situation it would be possible but difficult to get a firearm that is not used for hunting. The situation in America now though is so beyond that point that everyone should just be given a gun and assumed armed and dangerous at any point.

Criminals use knives and shit over here. I've seen a gun once. So the situation in Europe is not comparable to America. I tend to think of it along the lines of polygamous relationships, which are common in part of Asia, and just not give a shit as it doesn't concern me.

Yeah there's always the black market, which isn't as accessible as when it is legal. When people are using guns, people are more likely to die, mortality rate for a gunshot to the heart is 84%, knife is 30%.

America has practically the highest homicide rate in the developed world (2 or 4 times higher than most), with handgun homicides accounting for the majority of the difference.

I don't like guns, I'm glad I live in a country where they are outlawed and the self-defense argument is redundant.

I'm not going to get caught up in a guns debate with Americans. Good for you if you like your guns, you live in a country where you're allowed to own them.

drugs? no. guns? yes.

id take the option of more good guys being able to protect eachother with the negative of them being more common

what youre not getting is that the vast majority of that murder rate is from thugs killing other thugs

At the end of the day, the statistics speak for themselves. More people die due to gun crime in America.

at the end of the day we will still have more gangs and worse ghettos

Yeah, you can come in here with your fancy charts and high-falutin' "statistics", but what do you tell honest Americans who are stuck in an inner city that is nothing more than a glorified Sergio Leone western with black people? We need our guns to fight off the guys with guns! It's just science.

Yeah thugs killing other thugs because they have the means to do it. A death is still a death.

And guns are only used as self-defense in America in 0.2% of crimes, 0.8% in violent crimes. Oh and a large percentage of that small percentage is police officers use. Clearly they're not really doing their job and are predominantly being used for criminal purposes, of which the rate of homicide by gun would be much lower if the guns weren't actually legal. Regardless of who is killing who. If your theory about the bad guys acquiring them regardless if they're outlawed was true, then surely the statistics would be more level with the rest of the developed world as far as gun crime was concerned, because thugs and ghettos exist everywhere, and even if there are more in America it would not be enough to explain such a vast disparity in figures.
