Good non-fiction, recommend it to me Ebore elites.
« on: April 02, 2010, 04:30:30 PM »
There are a lot of moments in the day where I'm listening to audiobooks: commute to work, running, train, etc. I usually like fiction, but it's hard to do that during these moments so I've turned to non-fiction. I've burned through a lot of evolution stuff from Richard Dawkins, religious stuff from Dawkins, Harris and Hitchens so I don't really need something in that vain at this time.
Currently listening to Superfreakonomics and got Guns, Germs and Steel (why eurasian civilizations were able to survive and conquer others) and The World Without Us (got this from the ebore thread and found the premise incredibly interesting) in the waiting line.

It can be about anything: investigative journalism, politics, history, science. It just needs to be interesting (=well told/written) and give me insight.

Also don't just mention titles, give the premise and if possible your opinion.

Anything by Sarah Vowell, she writes about American history. Assassination Vacation, Take the Canolli and The Wordy Shipmates are all great.

Columbine by Dave Cullen is pretty good if you haven't read it yet. It's very similar to what I remember of In Cold Blood. It goes into great detail about the after effects of the attack and only has the attack itself in the beginning. Pretty good stuff, considering all of the media misinformation about what happened or what didn't happen.

Lance Armstrong's War- pretty informative and entertaining. It's funny because now we know some of the other rider's were doped back then - Landis, Hamilton, Mayo.

Man, I read The Hot Zone when I was 12 or so and was scared to death of Ebola for years.  I grew up not far from Reston so it seemed plausible that an outbreak would happen again.  :(

Yeah, I was about twelve when I read it. I was pretty sure Ebola would kill us all!

If you're into food politics Michael Pollan writes some great stuff--The Ominvores's Dilemma being his best work.

Jared Diamond (anthropology/culture) --Gun, Germs, and Steel
Malcolm Gladwell(economics/sociology/psychology/statistics)--Tipping Point, Blink, and his recent collection of New Yorker articles
Michael Lewis (sports and finance)--Moneyball, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, Liar's Poker

Well, I was gonna recommend Guns Germs and Steel and The World Without Us (fucking LOVED some of the chapters towards the end)... but looks like you got that covered. If you like Guns, pick up Collapse, also by Jared Diamond. It's kind of like a companion piece to Guns - instead of talking about why certain civilizations succeed, it discusses why some failed. I think it's a bit easier to get into than Guns, and one chapter in particular is pretty damn relevant in the wake of the Haiti earthquake.

Some other nonfiction I like:

We Wish To Inform You That Tomorrow We'll Be Killed With Our Families - depressing and disturbing look at the 1994 Rwandan genocide
Cosmos by Carl Sagan - pretty much sparked my fascination with astronomy and the mysteries of the universe
Fast Food Nation

also gonna start reading "Physics of the Impossible" by Michio Kaku soon. The guy gave a speech at my HS back in '99, and I remember being extremely captivated by it.

On top of being absolutely hilarious, it's also a great look into the trials and triumphs of independent movie-makers and actors trying to achieve their dreams. Bruce has a lot of stories about growing up with Sam Raimi and some of the crazy things they did to get funding early on and how absolutely dreadful their situation was at times. It's a really fun and, at times, insightful read.

Just want to second this recommendation.  If she reads the audiobook versions herself, even better.  She has a weird, squeaky voice, but I like the sound of it, oddly enough.
