OH NO DORITOS IN MY VIDYA GAME SOMEONE STOP THIS MADNESS!!!!!!
Yeah, judging by how forum tripe seem to not give a shit that the game they're buying is being blatantly taken over and used to sell them more crap, I think I may have misjudged this one.
It really is an ingenious narrative device--making a character that gamers can relate to. Eating doritos while wearing a mountain dew shirt and reeking of axe body spray...I'm sure it's not too far off from reality. Hopefully the ipod is in there as well, loaded up with shitty metal. They should take it all the way and add girls in the game for Snake to obsess over but never ask out, a basement for him to live in, and gaming forums where he can bitch about all his problems that he'll never do anything about.
Yeah the publishers/developers found a way to make more money out of a game in times when making a game cost a bloody testicles and studios are closing everywhere.
"the box that heals my character is now a doritos pack why most they taint my beloved art form with shameless ads!!!?"
cry me a fucking river.
MGS4 sold jillions of copies and you're talking about the "harsh economic climate."

You can pay for Konami's shitty management system that puts them in the position where they have to do this. Alternatively, they could make a game using less resources and release it on a system that isn't a gigantic fucking risk.
Who you calling forum tripe? Do I sense some self loathing there? We deal with it in every other form of media incessantly. It's a key way to make money, especially when most western customers who play this game most likely wouldn't have bought it, but yeah advertising in general weakens things. There's always been weird products in MGS games, it's just these products are either real or not a Japan-centric brand we don't recognise unlike previous MGS games. MGS is so rife with parody I couldn't take any of the advertising seriously anyway.
there we have it! Kojima-san is just trying to parody advertising in games by actually advertising in his game! oh wait, that's not parody at all. We've seen advertising in actual games that are more effective than this. Doesn't even have to be
in the game...there are a million ways to market a game outside of putting items that you direct your character to to pick up and use. This is another way for Kojima to shit on players, as he has been known to do.
also, you don't parody shitty writing by putting in 2 hour long cutscenes--that's over the line from "parody/satire" to "we tried, but we write like shit and have no concept of effective drama." It's pretty obvious to any person outside of the hardcore MGS forum fan base that every MGS game tries and seriously fails at telling a decent story. It's only MGS fans that have convinced themselves that Kojima is some genius of cinematic story telling. So lets not even get started on that point.
