i quit my job.
« on: April 07, 2010, 11:48:09 PM »
After working 24 hours (the third day like that in the last week) of unpaid overtime, I refused to come in after another 4 hours.  I dunno, was I being unreasonable here?  Yeah, we were past our project deadline but (a) it was our own self-imposed deadline, and it was blatantly obvious a week before that we wouldn't make it, (b) there was basically no end in sight and (c) not sleeping doesn't actually help the project get done faster, in fact it delays it because more mistakes get made, etc.  It sucks because my financial situation is pretty weak atm ...

the thing that made it completely unacceptable to me was how my initial statement that I'd be going home after 15 hours come what may (i didn't) was treated as totally unreasonable "game-playing".  i don't mind working overtime sometimes, but my own choice, it's not an obligation, i'm not a slave.  and working through the night to try to meet a deadline is one thing, continuing to work that way indefinitely past a deadline is another.

Unreasonable is entirely subjective. They were trying to get free work out of you, and you took a stand. Great. I've done the same thing many times over the course of my career as a gaijin in Japan. Every day I walk out of the office at 5.30 is like a giant slap in the face of corporate culture here. It's unreasonable to many other people that I do so, but perfectly reasonable to me. Works for me!

every hour of your life weaseled away from you by such bullshit is an hour gone forever, and an hour you will regret not having when you grow older

you can always get another job, but once you reach your natural end you can never ever ever get another hour, or week, or year

i generated a lot of bullshit myself while i was there, though.  i mean i'm not claiming to be blameless.  it was a sort of mutually dysfunctional and abusive relationship, really.

the thing about this last situation was that what they were trying to do wasn't even good for them.  there are a finite amount of hours per day, days per week, and sleep is a basic human need without which it's impossible to work efficiently.  i would have been endangering my health for no fucking reason, not even from their perspective.  yes, sometimes you can get something done faster by doing an all-nighter, but sustaining them throughout the week just doesn't add up.  they were just in denial about the situation and also it was about a symbolic display of commitment or control or something, i dunno.  ugh.

You made the right choice. Sometimes, more than often the management of your company is so fucking far up the client's ass that they will literally do anything for them (or for their own senior executives) to show how much they are commited. Of course nothing comes for free and they will slave their own workers to death. It happens EVEN if there is no chance of the project/ deadline to be met just to show the client that "we tried out best, mayne!".

Fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, he was working himself at least as hard as us, which wasn't helping anything either.  Ultimately, I didn't want to be part of a kamikaze mission unless it was actually something I was passionate about.  When I started doing this, just programming professionally was exciting enough, but now I need more than that ...

I'm fairly tempted to follow suit.  The situation where I work has gone completely down the crapper.  I started here as an assistant to the IT tech for two business units.  Doing so, I started with fairly low pay, as I was just learning.  The hours were not too bad, around 40 a week, but usually not over unless there was some sort of special project.  Then the IT division of the company took over this campus, and everything changed.  I'm now the only person on-site for 18+ business units, I have zero on-site assistance.  I support 5+ business units remotely.  My counterpart in Georgia is a moron, and will constantly call me for help, which I really don't have the time to give him, because if I could tell him how to install a program five times, I could have installed it ten.  At any time, I have 10+ items in my ticket queue that need worked on, and people wonder why things aren't done the second they're put in.  I started getting emails at 7AM today about someone that wanted a laptop set up for today.  They were traveling out of state and had to give it to a user there.  I got the ticket YESTERDAY to set this laptop up, and it said they wanted it worked on today, not done today.  But even so, how am I supposed to get anything done when the priority keeps getting bumped for the squeaky wheel?  Just tell everyone to call my boss and complain?  I've already had complaints about things not "getting done in a timely manner".  There's nothing I can do without help, which they refuse to hire.  And I honestly don't feel that compelled to work much harder, since I haven't seen a raise since I started here.  I'm still making assistant pay when I'm the only fucker here.  It kills me that someone can flip burgers for more than I make.  And this is my "career".

If I had a better offer, I'd be gone in a second.

I quit my job too, almost 2 weeks now.

After years and years of being taken advantage of, verbally abused, overworked and underpaid, and general bullshit treatment I left. Feels great to not work there anymore - but, at the same time, I am scared for the future.  I had to leave though....your sanity is more important than any dollar figure.

Yes, I would imagine that much like hiring staff at a game store, that you'd have to screen the applicants pretty heavily, winding up hiring someone who is a little too into the products being sold could be a recipe for disaster.
