There's someone who doesn't think this is a downgrade? He should have just taken the NBC 12am slot.

Exactly :bow

Fuck, you can't even laugh at the absurdity of it without a legion of fake Conan fanboys jumping down your neck anymore.
Since when is a higher budget and more creative control a downgrade?

Fox offered him less money than NBC gave him and no ownership over the program much like at NBC. Should he have taken it just because Fox is a more "prestigious" network? He took the deal that results in a higher quality show. more money. Period.

Full ownership = better show. Conan has proved time and time again he is at his best when he is unrestrained.

I'm bowing out of this thread, some of you are being fucking ridiculous. Again, no one is saying the show will suck. They are saying this is a downgrade, which it is, and that TBS sucks. How you can even debate that is beyond me. I didn't know I lived in a world where people gave a fuck about TBS; oh wait, no they don't. They only pretend to because Conan is moving there.

No one is overly debating either of those positions.

1.) TBS isn't hip
2.) TBS isn't a prestigious network.
3.) Those two things could certainly mean "downgrade" in many context to some people.

The first joke Conan made is essentialy this very joke.

Some people care about it on that level. Some people don't because all they care about is the actual show. No one is saying you can't crack wise in either direction.

Yea but that's not why he took the deal.

Yeah he took it for more money than Fox was offering no one is denying that was his motivating factor but what I care about is the element that results in a better show.

We aren't in the business why the hell should we care about ratings or the prestige of one channel over the other? People stop acting like tv critics, we aren't working for Variety here.

TBS is far from cool. It's a basic cable channel. Obviously. But my point (and others) is Conan is being given full ownership over the program resulted in Conan doing whatever show he wants to do without the weight of trying to tone it down to fit the Tonight Show legacy or NBC exec wishes. Conan gets to do whatever he wants on a nighlty basis. He can be as weird as he wants because of the less pressure to appeal to a wider audience beyond his niche. His niche audience is good enough for TBS. All of this adds up to Conan being funnier for Conan has shown many many times in the past is funniest when he doesn't give a shit. As during the last week of tonight or the writers strike...etc.

In terms of his career, it's a downgrade. End of story.

As a fan, you can argue that it might result in better material - but the bottom line is that he is moving from the The Tonight Show to basic cable.

I don't disagree with any of those points, its just all that matters to me as a fan is better material and full control is more likely to result in that than the deal Fox was putting forth.

Yep. Downgrade in prestigious of the show and channel but arguably it will be a far funnier show. :bow

Quote from: Nikki Finke
Team Conan also liked the strong lead-in of Family Guy and The Office, as well as the prospect that on cable he could have "more freedom to be creatively more exciting," a source tells us. "And then George [Lopez] called Conan and convinced him to do it."

Conan passes on both networks that produce those shows to go to the network that airs the reruns - what a great lead-in! :lol

Does Conan's target demographic even know TBS exists? They couldn't even find NBC!

... He should just move his show to FunnyOrDie.com at this rate, more people would actually watch it. :lol

I remember telling Cheebs I wouldn't be surprised to see Conan doing a web show like Tom Green in lieu of being on an actual network. I still think that would probably be better (and more creatively freeing :-*) than this TBS stuff.

But I guess at least with the TBS show he can use his regular crew and ensure they continue to get paying gigs. Lord knows Conan doesn't need the money.

After Conan gets dumped by TBS once they realize that his target demographic of baked high school/college students and slacker twenty-somethings don't actually watch television, he'll be able to pick from YouTube or Hulu. :lol

Why would I care?  He'll get his usual demographic and then some with this move.  Regardless of whether or not he's on a main network, this was a good move for him for content and financial reasons.  As much as I'd like to see him facing off against Leno, I don't care where he is.  You shouldn't either.

I'm a Conan fan and I don't think it's great news outside of the fact he can now do whatever he wants, except now with a much, much smaller budget. I was rooting for Fox.

But like Brand New I'm just glad to see he has a new show.

Conan isn't nearly as subversive as his fans wish he was.  Remember when people really thought Conan had bought that fancy car on NBCs dime?  Yea.

Apparently Conan's first reaction after getting the offer was that he didn't want to fuck over Lopez (and who hasn't wanted to, really?), only until he personally assured Conan that him as a leadin at 12 would be better than whatever he's doing at 11 did Conan sign on.

Isn't this exactly what he wants? Having a talk show is a hobby to him now. He doesn't need money anymore after NBC bought him off. This is a venue for him to enjoy a low-pressure opportunity to do what he likes, and he gets long weekends. Can't imagine he's too upset about it.

Also here is a big reason why this is good for him. We may all mock TBS but it is the second highest viewed cable channel in the 18-49 demo:
Net   Adults 18-49 (000)
USA   1,292
TBS   1,017
TNT   966
ESPN   830
AEN   795
FX   730
HIST   713
DISC   650
FAM   649
TRU   602

Same with 18-34 (where it crushes Comedy Central, a channel that didn't even rank in the top 10 for 18-49. The channel most wanted him to go to if he didn't go to Fox):
Net   Adults 18-34 (000)
USA   584
TBS   577
MTV   451
TNT   445
ESPN   411
FX   383
AEN   351
CMDY   349
FAM   349
DISC   312
