Gears 2 is the better game but I found Gears 1 to be less tedious to play through.  Gears 2 piles on so much story stuff yet most people don't know WTF they're talking about.  Otoh, Gears 1's writing is terrible in a tolerable way, much like a sci-fi channel movie so that you don't mind wading through the plot in order to get to the action.

I'm generally mostly puzzled by people who try to piece together a story out of Gears (or Halo for that matters) All these games simply are excuses to roll around different levels and see crazy shit go down as you mow down aliens. The "story" of these games are the set piece battles. Not some interactive storytelling.

I honestly couldn't tell you much of anything that has occured in the Gears "story" outside of evil aliens that come out of the ground. Halo isn't much better despite having a legion of fans who swear by that story. If you're playing these games for the story that strikes me as odd but whatever.

Other than the Maria stuff (and the speech making at the very beginning of the game) I honestly don't remember any of the Gears 2 "story". When I think of Gears 2 I think mainly of some of the co-op setups. But I hear you.

I partially understand why these games try to create a story to invest that part of the audience who cares about such things in an action shooter. I just think far fewer people are interested in that part of the game than they think. Its a small section of the hardcore and its reviewers. Most normal people hate when the story stuff kicks in, in a game like Gears.

There are some genres or some specific games where story does matter. But shooters like Gears are not such a genre for me.

And stories do matter, even if they are simple. Gears of War 2 had a simple and cool story, with some moments that showed lack of maturity by the Devs in how to handle it, but it gave some drive to the game.

When people tell me some of the games that have "good" stories I laugh. Because they are shit. They might have good production values. Which a lot of people confuse with good stories apparently. Most videogames in fact work better with very simple stories or minimal story. Because interaction is king. Not sitting there and watching cutscenes. (Outside of the few genres that demand you do it like jrpg's for instance)

There is nothing wrong with having a little personal motivation as to why a story matters to you in a particular game. I fully admit there are some game stories even in action genres that I appreciate more than others.

I totally get why some people like God of War and Kratos and that story. I don't particularly think its a good story or an especially good character but I get that people get invested and that motivates them to play that series or other series. Especially if the production value, and graphics, and voice acting quality is better than other games.

Videogame stories to me are generally more about tone. Get the tone right and that's all I really care about. The extreme specifics of the story or even the general make-up of the story is sort of less important.

Gears of War should have a certain tone that its fans like. Halo should have a certain tone that its fans like. MGS should have a certain tone that its fans like. But in nearly all these cases it isn't because there is some universally wonderful story being told. It's simply that a specific group of gamers identify with the tone that is being presented and its enough justification for them to play that versus another game which doesn't have a tone they can identify with or that they enjoy.

Let me see...i think Bioshock 1 had a great story. But that's the feeling i got at the time.

Good stories is easier to spot (Some better, some worse), namely Mass Effect 2, Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 1 and 3, Second Sight, Heavy Rain, Assassins Creed, Splinter Cell Conviction, Max Payne, Call of Duty 4, God Of War, Gears of War 2, Halo, Tales of Vesperia, Condemned etc

I absolutely, and 100% believe that there's a place for story and place for no story. No story games are obviously ones centered around mere competition, which is why MP has become so big. Games that are based around character progression through series of events, demand stories to be told or they are condemned into being deathmatches with bots. That's what i believe in, and that's what many developers are starting to believe in too now that they are slowly realizing that they stopped being 14 year old kids a long time ago.

This is not "back in the day" anymore. Back in the day, you were watching Double Dragon on your VHS and swearing to your friends it was the greatest shit ever. Those days are gone.

Games are largely like movies, with the difference being that you can shift some of the focus out of the story, because interactivity alone will already give you an emotional response.

Problem? Age. The longer you play Single player games, the less impressive and engaging the simple fact of interactivity becomes, and more and more is expected from the context and effects of such interactivity.

Unless you are distinguished mentally-challenged, and just killing stuff on screen is all you need to be emotionally stimulated for the rest of your life. Kudos to you, but for the rest of us who aren't distinguished mentally-challenged, the gaming industry is trying to step up to the plate.
