First Xcom, next Syndicate. Good thing the FPS is so versatile

I'd like for it to be a modern take on the RTS that the series used to be, but it isn't. I can deal with it. What I can't deal with is the game looking so horribly bland and stiff. It's still got a year to go, so maybe they can pull it together in the last months of development, but right now I'm far from impressed.

I agree. I'm really digging the 1950s Sci Fi feel.

I like that there's some strategic elements to the combat, but I'm still not really sold on it.

First seen by the public as a uniquely retro first-person shooter, these screenshots sent in by a Kotaku reader - part of what we're told was a recent marketing survey - suggest the game has gone back to the drawing board, coming back as a third-person shooter.

While the 1960s setting and general XCOM prequel vibe remains, it's now apparently being pitched as a squad-based game similar to SOCOM or Republic Commando, with the player in command of a team of agents, which you can order around the map to perform various actions.

Quote
If that's not interesting enough, the survey takers are also being told the game would be for PS3 and Xbox 360 (with no mention of PC), and are being asked how they'd feel if it was made available as a $30 downloadable title, as opposed to a $60 retail game.

man the story of both these XCOM games is so weird to me.

I can almost believe 2K did this on purpose.

I think you're assigning too much organization credit to 2K.

It's really hard to understand what's going on with 2K over this. Presumably, the long development time is because they changed things after the initial unveil was met with some criticism by people who were fans of the series. Except that they then released a title [XCOM Enemy Unknown] that fans of the series loved, obviating the need to change XCOM to fit what fans of the series wanted. Add in a dash of organizational dysfunction on top of that and you end up with a situation where the "premier" XCOM title languishes in development hell for years and then is eventually shoved out the door at a discounted price.

I loved the style it had originally. A real shame it got fucked because it wasn't a "real" XCOM game.

People would be a lot less hard on it if 2K had just announced both XCOM games at the same time.

Sounds like it although this sounds like its at least in the same universe as the strategy games.

Seems like they've made a lot of good changes. It's a lot closer to being just a real-time version of X-COM.

I was more interested in the original version. Fans are so fucking whiny whenever any kind of change is made to a franchise.

Syndicate owned, but the story boned. Damn shame.

Reviews are mixed.

I'm still kinda curious to try it though.

The game has clear issues but is a lot closer to an 8 than a 6 provided that you are playing at a difficultly level that is appropriate for your skill. I would imagine just playing this game for content tourism would be awful as the story really is as jumbled and uneven as the reviews say that it is. The actual tactical combat is very good.

I haven't read any reviews since I already pre-ordered the game and it will unlock for us dirty Europeans on Friday. What's the appropriate difficulty for you Frag? Is the game unusually easy or something?

Frag likes a challenge, and is a masochistic son of a gun.  So, he tends to play things on the highest difficulty he can handle without getting nosebleeds.

I know that's the case for turn-based strategy games, but I would be surprised if he played real-time action games on easy mode. With XCOM being a hybrid I figured I'd ask.

I play almost everything on a higher difficulty than normal except any kind of fighting games and racing games, which usually don't offer the choice. This game is really more of a strategy than action game so ramping it up to hardest seemed reasonable. Strategy games that are too easy = boring.

I would not recommend playing XCOM at anything less than "Veteran". You need the game to punish your mistakes or the entire battle management layer is wasted.

Cool, thanks! I've played all X-Com games, except Interceptor, on higher difficulties so Veteran should be fine for me.

Sure, I've played Rebelstar Tactical Command, Silent Storm, UFO: Aftermath/Aftershock/Afterlight, and UFO Extraterrestrials. I think those are the most common similar games that people associate with the X-Com series. I'm not that big on smartphone gaming so I haven't tried any of the clones on the App Store yet.

Played it for like 5 minutes. It was a pirated version and there was something about it I really didn't like. I can't remember what though.

In other news, I just beat The Bureau: XCOM Declassified and that's also an entry you can safely skip without missing out on anything special.
