Anyone remember Police Quest?

LA radio is reporting that Daryl F. Gates, former LAPD chief and designer of Police Quest starting with Open Season, is on his deathbed and likely won't live through the weekend.

Police Quest 4 was the best one of the series before it became SWAT.

I was SO EXCITED to get the first SWAT game. Too bad it was fucking riddled with awful game breaking bugs. I remember breaking the CDs in fury.

The other SWAT games weren't bad. And there was one that was a top-down, turn based RTS-y kind of thing that was really neat.

have you played SWAT 4?

I haven't played any of the other games but SWAT 4 is really good.  I think it's better than any of the rainbow six games as far as tactical squad games go.

Police Quest was the only Quest franchise that I didn't really play.

I remember a family friend having the original Police Quest (with 16 color EGA graphics and the text parser)... fun times, even though the game was so freaking hard.

I enjoyed those, even with their jank ass 160x200 graphics. Plus you could take a shower with your clothes on and the game would give you shit.

You really had to pay attention to police procedures though and you'd get punished Sierra-style if you didn't. If you didn't walk around your car to check it before getting inside, you would blow a tire and crash your car and die

I remember getting Game Over b/c of showering with my clothes on, stripping naked in public, buying scotch and drinking on the job, and from trying to solicit a hooker... fun times, fun times.

This was my favorite one, too

I remember driving up to the scene of some indecent exposure thing and it turned out to be some crazy hobo washing himself in a lake or a river or something.  If you get out of the car and use the gun icon on him, you shoot him in the back of the head and it's game over.

I think I still have it somewhere, complete with the map of the city that has a pentagram drawn on it; THE MURDERS THEY ARE INSPIRED BY SATAN.

I hated the early PQ games because they made you follow the rules so strictly (at least, to my 14 yr old mind). Realism != fun.

Oh man I loved playing through Open Season. I couldn't get past the part where you go to arrest the biker type guy. His girlfriend gets pissed and comes at you with a butcher knife. That was so damn tough. If I remember correctly you had to quickly use the pepper spray, then quickly select the gun, then quickly select the handcuffs.
