Split Second Demo

This game is SO SWEET

Not as fast paced as Burnout, I think, but it looks so good and feels so good.

I'll check it out to see if I like it better than Blur. I'll most likely get both anyway.

Tried it out. Unfortunately it's not a MP demo so its hard to get a full sense of it. I think I like Blur more but this definitely has its appeal. The powerplays can be impressive and the basic driving model is pretty simple and easy to understand which is nice. Something about the powerplays seems a bit random and in some cases even potentially detrimental to yourself which is interesting but not something I necessarily think is a good idea. Frame rate is also a little less than ideal although its an attractive game.

I think I like it but that demo is so small its hard to really be definitive.

Yeah it's alright, but I need to try multiplayer. It won't be as hectic as Blur though since 8 players online is the maximum.

Nobody here is going to play multiplayer when this comes out. Why do you base everything on how multi is? Get real, guys... real talk.

That's the only thing I would play. Single player is boring in racing games. I hit the level cap on Blur just because it was an MP demo. This game may be really awesome. But until I hit up the multiplayer I won't know.

I'm glad they put in first person since I think that wasn't there last E3

If you're MP focused, dont even touch this game. Blur was entirely based around MP experience, you can tell just from the demo alone.

Split Second is the true Burnout next gen experience. A little rocky and not as fluid, but it's right there and you can see it. I'm fucking hyped. All I need is a good achievement list and I will buy this shit day one. I dont care if each track loses its wow after the few races, I dont plan on holding onto it. I want my wow-like movie experience. Maybe this will tell Criteron how to make a real Burnout.

I liked Blur too, but visually, Split Second fucks it in the ass. Cars have weight, there is a sense of speed (do a smooth sick line and tell me you dont start feeling like you could wipe any minute). The only problem is that theres no damage visuals, and sometimes you will explode at the smallest peck.

This is how I was when I played the DiRT demo long ago. I bought that game immediately.

Based on that demo... nah. It doesn't have that same sense of speed. Doesn't matter if the demo uses earlier cars. Burnout games feel really fast from the very first race. The drifting isn't as tight either.

I think most us like it.

It's neat and attractive and fun. It's just a very short and small demo.

And like I said for me it has to have some fun MP. It doesn't have to do all the leveling and mod stuff that Blur is doing but if the racing is simply solid and fun in the MP portion then I'm down.

Almost certainly I will prefer this to Paradise.

I totally get why some people like Paradise but for me that took away nearly everything I really liked about the Burnout series. Open world design is not always ideal.

Unless it gets like four times as fast it won't match up to Burnout.  No boost, much slower base speed, fairly rough, no traffic, drifting is more mario kart than burnout, and it doesn't even have the thrill of slamming into other cars.  It feels more like Full Auto done right than a successor to Burnout 3.  Not that Paradise was either, but still.

That is what I am saying! Except this IS fun. Like I said, I could see this studio taking the reins and making the next Burnout, instead of GTA Burnout or whatever garbage Criteron cooked up. Do you really need boost? afaik Blur didnt have one except as a power up. Does that suddenly suck?

The speed thing doesn't necessarily bother me. It's definitely slower than some of the other arcade racing titles but then all that really depends on the course design imo. The track in the demo is kind of a simple and easy one. I hope some of the others are more devious and twisting.

I'm not saying it sucks without boost but it could use it.  Blur is different in the that you're sole goal in a race isn't just to win.  You can be earning points/fans to unlock more cars and perks.  Also, blur is a game where you have pick ups, not a bar that power up bar that fills up as you drive.

Split Second could have had a nice dynamic where you could have used the points you built up to either boost or trigger destruction.  Usually in these games a way to speed yourself up or slow the enemy down help keep the action tight.  Split Second has a nice idea with triggering shortcuts and course changes, but since everything is placed around the course, there is still a period where you lag behind everyone else.  It isn't really an issue in the demo because winning the race is super easy and I'm only assuming what happens when you play multiplayer or on harder difficulties.

Also, besides your standard race, there are 5 other modes:

Survival, where you try to build up your score and timer by passing trucks that are dropping barrells that can blow up your car. The more trucks you pass, the higher your score multiplietr increases. There are lots of trailers out there for this mode.

Detonater, where its a single lap with no power meter. All of the powerplays automatically go off as soon as you approach them. Explosive mayhem.

Chopper, where there is a chopper flying behind your car shooting missles at you. The faster you drive, the easier it is to avoid the missles, but the easier it is to crash as well.

The other two modes are yet to be revealed.

Awesome game. I'm definitely picking this up. One of most enjoyable racers I've played since Burnout.

I hated the open world of Paradise until they implemented restarts then it quickly became one of my all time favorite racers. It'll be interesting to see what Criterion does with the Need for Speed franchise. Hopefully it's unique and not just Burnout in a NFS skin.

The review says the rubber banding is pretty bad in single player. Which I normally wouldn't care about since a racing game is all about MP to me but apparently you have to unlock stuff through the singleplayer to play it in MP.

Quote from: IGN review
At first, power plays seem like an arbitrary gimmick, but after a few races, the mechanic reveals more depth than is immediately apparent. The most devastating power plays require either inordinate amounts of patience and delayed gratification by requiring a completely full power bar, or expert timing. Learning each track is important, but learning the telltale signs of a power play in the making is the key to winning races. This is particularly important later on in the single player mode against AI opponents, which feature some of the most frustrating rubber-banding in a racer this side of Mario Kart.

This is indicative of Split/Second's only real failings. There are a few issues that have plagued arcade racers for years, and Split/Second demonstrates the worst of them. There will never be a race in Split/second's campaign where the AI fails to keep right on your tail, but there will be plenty of times where you're hopelessly outmatched and destined to finish in third or fourth - you're either winning a close race or getting completely destroyed. Meanwhile, a rewind feature like that found in Forza or DIRT is nowhere to be found, and a single mistake in the third lap of a race can result in a vicious cycle of restarts. These don't kill the game, but they do result in major frustration. Should Black Rock revisit the world of Split/Second, it's an issue they should pay close attention to.

It should have been, but is not.  I picked it up hoping for a smooth 60 fps, but the developers have placed a 30 fps cap on the framerate.  :\

It looks better due to higher resolutions and more anti-aliasing, but it definitely isn't what it could have been.  Also, transitions during load screens aren't as smooth as the console versions (HDD access causes this), unlike GRID or DIRT 2 (neither of which had anything like that).  They don't even have 360 button prompts when using a controller.

It feels like a half assed port all around.  It looks a bit better and is cheaper, so there's that, but it's not what it could have been.

Here's what Eurogamer had to say about the demos...

Quote
It does look as though post-processing is pared back a touch on PS3, but it also seems to be the case that the 360 version of the game operates with a slightly lower vertical resolution - something like 1280x672 or thereabouts - up against the native 720p on PS3. You can get an idea of how this manifests during gameplay in this comparison shot.

It's pretty safe to assume that any multiplatform release will typically look worse on the PS3. I don't know why you people with multiple consoles waste your time with PS3 ports.
Online friends perhaps?  The difference in quality between most ports these days is pretty minor.

It's worse when an exclusive ends up having issues.  Alan Wake running at sub-HD with tearing or the ultra low performance Splinter Cell Conviction, for instance, were pretty disappointing.  At least a lot of PS3 exclusives end up looking ace.

They are usually best on the PC, actually.

The differences between the 360 and PS3 versions of games are usually nothing compared to the rift between the consoles and the PC.  ;)
