I remember when,
Girls were goodie two shoes, but now they turned to freaks
Allofasudden "We love you Phife" - ease of ho, my name's Malik
Phife this, Phife that, where you goin', where you at
These girls don't know me from jack, yet I feel like the Mack
You didn't want me then, so hon, don't want me now
Here, Here - take the towel, wipe off your brow
And take the Ccontact out your eye, you're far from lookin' fly
You get an E for effort, and T for nice try
Now tell me what's the reason, for dyin' your hair
Slum village gold still danglin in your ear
You barely have a neck but still sportin' a rope
Four-finger ring just so Phifer can scope
You looked in the mirror, didn't know what to do
Yesterday your eyes were brown but today they are blue
Your whole appearance is a lie and it could never be true
And if you really loved yourself then you would try and be you
If your hair and eyes were real, I wouldn't have dissed ya
But since it was bought, I had to dismiss ya
If you can't achieve it, then why not try and weave it
If you can't extend it then you might as well suspend it
If you can't braid it, best thing to do is fade it
I asked who did your hair and you tell me "Diane made it"
If you were you and just you, talk to you, maybe
But I can't stand, no bionic lady
Tryin' hard to look fly, but yo, you're lookin' dumber
If I wanted someone like you I woulda swung with Jamie Summers
You wanna be treated right, see Father MC
Or check Ralph Tresvant, for sens-a-tiv-i-ty
See I am not the one, I got more game than Parker Brothers
Phife Dog is on the mic and I'm smooth like Butter . . .

listen to the rhyme, it's a black ink fact
percentile rate of date rape is fat
this is all due to the reason of the skeezin'
you got the right weekend but you're in the wrong season
if you're in the wrong season, that means you gotta break
especially if a squaw tries to cry out rape
you be all flexed 'cause she got it going on
you don't want to flirt because you know that you're wrong
so instead you rest your head on the arm of the couch
envisioning you're head of a great sex bout
worthy opponent all you wanna do is bone it
you ask "can i kick it?"
she says "you can't stick it"
this is the case the situation is sticky
should you try to kiss or hit towards a hickey?
not, even you can ask Steven
if the vibe ain't right? huh, you're leavin'
hit the road jack and alladat
but if she offers her abode, you'll drop your load...
right smack dab in the middle
get the kitten i got crazy tender vittles

If you like Tribe, you will like Black Sheep. Not their popular songs, but the other songs off their debut album.

I think rap music peaked in that era ... it's been all downhill since.

Phife > Q-tip

Phife has that flow but Tip has that smooth style. They both compliment greatly, but Phife as a whole is dope as shit.  :badass

God damn is Q-Tip one of the most underrated rappers of all time? Smoothest voice in rap by far, and he can ride a beat.

I love the production on their albums. Damn. So fresh and organic compared to some of the more borrowed sounds from most modern rap albums

They're both kickass.

Do you like Consequence? He's on their latter albums, and recently he's been doing stuff with Kanye

He's on Spaceship by Kanye West, at the end.

He's also on Gone by Kanye, off Late Registration.

Outside of those verses I don't like the way he raps.

I think Q-Tip was better than Phife in the ATCQ days, but now they BOTH suck. Q-Tip's verse on DJ Shadow's "Enuff" was horrifying.

What happened to them? It seems like they tried to hard to appeal to the mainstream with poor production. There jazzy-bass heavy production was timeless so I don't see why they changed it

People getting fuck sued for sampling is what happened to them. That and the way they got absolutely fucked from "The Low End Theory". Rumor has it that the three of them made a profit of THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS off that record, when all their fees were recouped. THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS SPLIT BETWEEN THREE PEOPLE. No wonder Jarobi bounced

I've never heard that; damn. It's sad that an album that good could go as un-noticed (in terms of commercial success) as it did. But this is what happens when rap is dominated by what's being played on TV and heard on the radio.

In rock, bands that get absolutely no airplay/MTV time still sell very well, mainly because they have a solid, loyal fanbase. Yet with rap it seems like record sales are directly tied to MTV/BET penetration, no matter how terrible the music is.

Jurassic 5 released a pretty decent album this year and it went nowhere. Same with the Roots. While mother fucking Jay Z phones in an entire album and goes platinum. Oh well

touring.

bands make most of their money from touring. most rap acts tour 1/10 of the time that 'rock' bands do.

De La Soul is Dead is one of my favorite hip-hop albums of all time (a few years ago I would've said it was my favorite, ever)! De La and Tribe both had three absolutely incredible albums, back to back to back. I couldn't put one over the other. But I will say this: Q-Tip is fucking embarrasing over Chemical Brothers and DJ Shadow tracks, but De La was still ripping it on "The Grind Date". I mean, it's nowhere near as good De La USED to be, but it'll do in a pinch.

Everyone in this thread that loves De La & Tribe and that whole Native Tounges sound NEEDS to get themselves a copy of People Under The Stairs' "Question In The Form Of An Answer". Donkey, you know what's up.

i couldn't agree more about the "3 great records each" part. when records reach that status for me, i don't(can't) compare them. there's no point.

yeah..if you like this sound, you'll probably dig PUTS.

but don't forget about all the awesome shit from this era. Toxic Adam is right. this was the peak.

Mecca & the Soul Brother, Illmatic, Breaking Atoms, Enter da Stage, Funky Technician, Step in the Arena, Runaway Slave, Stunts-Blunts-and HipHop, One For All, Time's Up.......

shall i go on?
