I think that's actually the answer. The "introducing myself while walking into the room" bit is subconsciously reassuring, so they try to milk it.

But combined with the fades, it reminds me of movies where you're seeing things through the eyes of a character who's slipping in and out of consciousness, hearing snippets of dialogue but unaware of how much time is passing in between. It's like Tim James is the doctor at the secret facility where the hero's being examined for possible mutations.
