Bungie, the developer of blockbuster game franchises including Halo, Myth and Marathon, and Activision, a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, the #1 online games publisher (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that they have entered into an exclusive 10-year partnership to bring Bungie’s next big action game universe to market. Under the terms of the agreement, Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on the new intellectual property on multiple platforms and devices. Bungie remains an independent company and will continue to own their intellectual property. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Quote
Activision will broaden its portfolio with a new franchise from one of the industry’s most creative, successful and proven studios, whose games have sold more than 25 million units worldwide. To date, Bungie’s Halo  games have generated approximately $1.5 billion in revenues, according to The NPD Group, Charttrack and GfK. Activision expects this agreement to be accretive to its operating margins as of the release of the first game.

“We chose to partner with Activision on our next IP because of their global reach, multi-platform experience and marketing expertise,” said Harold Ryan, President of Bungie. “From working together over the past nine months on this agreement, it is clear that Activision supports our commitment to giving our fans the best possible gaming experiences.”

So now Bungie will work 10 years on one IP...hahaha
It better be something that will sell like hotcakes otherwise 10 years plan will flop

Yeah, I don't understand that at all - I'm guessing Activision is paying out the ass for them, way more than MS was willing to. Would have liked to see some of these companies (IW and Bungie) go independent or pair up with a smaller publisher, so they can maybe flex their creative muscles a bit.

And Halo is one of the more colorful and visually varied FPS series.

i thought part of getting out of the MS thing was because they felt they "weren't getting the financial benefits of their hard work"

I mean... i hear Activision are just SWELL with those sort of payments!

I also assume that whatever this is that MS had first refusal and, well, refused?

Apparently. Wonder why, we will see when we see the game i guess.

I certainly think Bungie is counting their chickens a lil bit too early. Out of all their games, only Halo turned into a mega hit. Because of Xbox and MS.

Now they sign with Activision for a 10 year plus plan with sequels and spin offs in mind, because they think they can make another Halo success story with their next IP?

Ok.

I think Bungie is going to find that crossplatform players are going to be way less tolerant of their matchmaking snafus. Although it looks like Reach's matchmaking is a huge improvement.

I don't understand why this is so unexpected. Yeah, Activision has a bad rap in the gaming community, but an amazing distribution reach and a proven marketing record. If you're a company like Bungie that has the chops and you need someone to push your wares, there probably isn't a better choice than Activision.

But are they gonna be puking out CoD games?

Its not unexpected to anybody with a brain. Its just unexpected to gamer nerds i.e. GAF types. As far as them doing Call of Duty games that's probably highly unlikely. They've already said its a new IP and if they were going to continue doing an older IP they might as well have stuck with Halo which is a pretty damn big franchise in its own rights.

Fired the heads of the company. Caused a lot of the talent to leave and follow the heads to a new company.

That being said, this isn't a purchase of Bungie like it was with Infinity Ward.

Halo 4 on PC baby 8)

Well the interesting bit is definitely that whatever the new IP is, its definitely going to be going to multiple platforms, PS 3, and PC included. That is what Activision does.

In that sense I'm surprised that Microsoft didn't make a stronger play for this since their first party is a bit weak.

because it is fun to watch people attach personalities onto companies.  Things like how Remedy is a liar, Square-Enix is a traitor, Nintendo is Jesus-Zeus, and a bunch of stuff about Ubisoft.

I don't know how Blur will sell, but Activision seems pretty popular.  Even Prototype sold a lot and that was just a lot of brown and boring.  But then again, wasn't that developer screwed over or something?

This.

Certain gamers love to follow their companies like they follow their sports teams instead of just understanding that its a business. So they over create villains and saints. Activision is currently the top dog villain. And bungie is one of the saints. So their brains can't comprehend why a saint would get together with a villain. It's  :lol

The only surprising thing here is this 10 year plan crap.

Eurogamer has some interesting interviews

Quote
We also asked whether the wording of the announcement - a 10-year deal for games connected with a new IP, rather than a game-specific deal - might mean that Bungie's new project is massively-multiplayer.

"I can't get into specifics, but we're definitely looking at building a universe that people want to spend time in," Jarrard said.

"Much like Halo but we have much more grandiose vision here, so it's a long-term partnership for us. We're really embarking on something that will be a significant undertaking for the studio that will involve multiple games set inside this brand new IP and universe.

"But clearly Activision does have good experience running large-scale universes over a long period of time, so that was one appealing attribute that drew us to them."

MMO?

No.

Actually, the whole point of the Split is Bungie wanted to be independent. Because they wanna be getting all the money MS was making from Halo. Which is why Jason Jones and whatever have spent most of their time creating this "universe" for their next IP.

It's all because of money. If MS's thing was to have Bungie work on Halo forever, they wouldn't have let them go would they?

Hence the 10 year plan, those Bungie dudes have such an hard on for that money, that they made a 10 year plan. As if mega hits were ever born from this kind of thinking.

I'm sure a big portion of it does have to do with money but I won't pretend to know the specifics of their money situation with Microsoft or Activision. I'll just make friendly wager with you that whenever this Bungie IP does come out, it won't have Call of Duty branding and it won't simply be a Call of Duty reskin in space.

I'd also make that friendly wager against being an MMO. Or at least the first game being an MMO (Not that an off-shoot couldn't come down the road). A genre that has no traction at all on consoles and would only be competing with WoW.

It sounds like they are expanding on what they have been doing with the Halo games.  Like with ODST, you fight the conflict as part of an ODST squad and with Reach you're with that Spartan group.  Halo 1-3 were about you being Master Chief going around and taking care of shit (and that Elite in 2) while the newer games are about squads and being more average.

I think it would be neat if they expand on that and make it almost like a Tom Clancy type franchise.  Just like how Tom Clancy carry that brand, you have Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, HAWX, RUSE, EndWar, etc.  If they plan it all out and have it fit together at the start, that could be pretty cool.

Well with MS, MS owned them and their IP. They just paid them to make a game.

Bungie wanted more, pulls the creativity crap, doesn't want to continue keep working on Halo because they've been doing it forever (3 games...).

Needed money for next project, so what do they do? They make a cheap quick piece of shit like Halo 3 ODSt and i'm betting that Halo Reach will be some half assed 4 hour game too.

And now a 10 year plan for a new IP with spin offs and shit accounted for, and Bungie is already speaking "Universe" and relating it to Halo.

It's money. Of course it won't be Call of Duty, but pretty damn certain it will be a FPS, because that's what sells and Bungie is gonna try hard to repeat history.

If they go MMO, then lol, bomb incoming.

I could potentially see something like that. But I have a feeling the first game out of the chute is going to be a fairly traditional style game. Because if you have all these plans of creating a massive universe, the first game has to hit it out of the park like Halo did to provide the fuel for that. And the way you do that is by making a really good game that everyone buys into.

"See, it's called PITCHFORK, and it's set on this weird trident-shaped planet.  Our hero, Commander Boss, wears this wicked performance-enhancing helmet and armor, and is aided by a tiny spirit named Hellena.  We're going with a red color scheme."

lulz. Sony gloating already.

Sony’s said in a statement that today’s announcement of Bungie’s new ten-year deal to have its new IP published by Activision on various platforms as “great news for gamers”.“This is great news for all gamers,” said SCEA comms boss Patrick Seybold. “When Bungie’s amazing talent and creative minds are unleashed and married with the incredible power of PlayStation 3, amazing things will happen. Ultimately, as a gamer, if you want the best content available from the industry’s most renowned developers, today’s announcement further signifies that PlayStation 3 will be the only place to get it.”It further reads: “With last years amazing and award winning PS3 titles, to the roadmap and surprises we have for this year, the momentum for PS3 and PSN continues. I think I speak for everyone, when I say I can’t wait to learn about this new IP and world that Bungie is creating.”

Honour?

I'm dying here! :lol I love it

It's GAF!

You have so many groups in that thread.

Sony fanboys who think Microsoft is screwed now or can gloat that bungie games will be on their platform.
Bungie fans who just love Bungie no matter what.
Dudes who liked Bungie but hated Activision so they now have to recalibrate their spin.
Dudes who are happy now because they think Bungie games will sell even more so it gives them more e-penis cred.
Company honor warriors like that dude you quoted.

etc, etc.

Doesn't MS own the Halo licence? I wonder how shitty the Halo's after Halo Reach will be  :lol

Actually...if i had to bet, i bet the games will start becoming better somehow.

Halo 2 was kinda good. Halo 3 was good but not great. Halo ODSt was a big turd. And Reach is still up for debate.

If anything, Halo kinda needs a new hand on it. Now whether MS can build a good team is another question, we barely know who works at that place.

They already have a great sound guy though, the MGS 4 dude (best part of the game really).

Bungie basically established the Xbox brand. MS wouldn't be in their current position if it weren't for them.
Bungie going multiplatform is pretty huge.

But yeah, the Halo games went downhill after Halo CE imo. Bungie can finally make a HD game now, though. :teehee
