lulz. Sony gloating already.

Quote
Sony’s said in a statement that today’s announcement of Bungie’s new ten-year deal to have its new IP published by Activision on various platforms as “great news for gamers”.“This is great news for all gamers,” said SCEA comms boss Patrick Seybold. “When Bungie’s amazing talent and creative minds are unleashed and married with the incredible power of PlayStation 3, amazing things will happen. Ultimately, as a gamer, if you want the best content available from the industry’s most renowned developers, today’s announcement further signifies that PlayStation 3 will be the only place to get it.”It further reads: “With last years amazing and award winning PS3 titles, to the roadmap and surprises we have for this year, the momentum for PS3 and PSN continues. I think I speak for everyone, when I say I can’t wait to learn about this new IP and world that Bungie is creating.”

Once a franchise reaches that mega level it sells based on brand rather than the individual quality of any one specific entry. That goes for any big brand. Call of Duty, Halo, God Of War, World of Warcraft, The Sims, etc.

Now what may occur is that after a few bad entries word of mouth starts to decay and the brand starts to decline. Time also in general slowly tends to erode any brand. But as far as sales, Microsoft has nothing to worry about whenever they drop the next gen version  of Halo. "Regular" people don't buy games because of devs. No matter who the dev is. The same way that "regular" people don't go see movies because of directors.

Now from a gamer perspective it is reasonable to care about devs because we care more about the quality of the game. So as long as people are able to separate those two distinctions, everything is cool. The problem is that the "hardcore" often aren't able to do that.

I guess I'm just interested to see what both Bungie and IW do now that they're at new companies.  and if they can recreate the magic of their other games starting from scratch.

probably more FPS.  and they won't outsell the respective COD and Halo games done by new teams.

Certain gamers love to follow their companies like they follow their sports teams instead of just understanding that its a business. So they over create villains and saints. It's not really about this at all.  It's simply surprising to see Bungie jump into the arms of a publisher that has notoriously abused its development houses and run franchises into the ground.  They left Microsoft behind for additional freedom, I thought, so this seems rather suspect.

It's not surprising at all. Because as long as they negotiate their contract properly they don't give a shit about that other stuff. They care about making money and retaining their own IP. If you buy into all that other stuff I don't know what to say. They seem to have negotiated the contract correctly and they will have a big publisher pushing their games. That's all that any dev house cares about.

But isn't this just a publishing and distribution deal? It's not like they are going to own Bungie or their IP.

It seems somewhat similar to the relationship Activision had with iD before they moved on to Bethesda.

Awesome news! If only for the fanboy meltdowns.

I guess these guys have been playing too many games and taking it all very seriously. The Medals of Duty and Call of Honor in their favourite games dont translate to the industry in real life??!? How in the hell?! How can Bungie create a paragon of honor like Master Chief and not follow his principles?!

I still don't understand why Bungie left MS. I'm sure MS would offer them a huge bonus if they'd stayed. But still, Bungie wanted (desperately) out.
Bungie would've never become popular if it weren't for MS. And vice versa. Halo franchise became big thanks to MS' deep pockets.

They probably offered them a better deal plain and simple. More money. Slightly more freedom. Probably less of an onerous schedule or at least a schedule they can supervise. They get a chance to make money potentially across all platforms.

Microsoft certainly is responsible for a lot of success for Halo on the marketing front but making a good game also helped. It's not like Activision is a slouch in marketing themselves based on the sales of MW 2. I'm pretty sure Bungie is gonna do alright for themselves on the deal.

But still, they've signed a 10-year contract with Activision. That's a pretty stupid thing to do after you left a publisher because you didn't like the way they handled your stuff.
What if they get tired of Activision after a few years?

I think Bungie is pretty much fucked. I'm sure the team will be disbanded soon. Activision basically made a RARE purchase.

Halo was supposed to be a trilogy, right?

I can understand Bungie moving on: working on the same franchise for a decade would get tiring and if they can't get the creative and financial control with one publisher, they should just move onto another.  Whatever it is they have planned, I probably won't play it, much like I skipped Halo since the second one.

Reach looks like a pretty solid game, actually.  Not something bare bones like ODST.

My guess is that their next game is going to be some sort of sci-fi adventure game since they of course love that setting, but maybe not a fps after a fucking decade of Halo.  They can keep plenty of fans like me sucking on their teet as long as they make a good game.  Plastering "From the developers of Halo" on the box is all that Activision is after.

Don't know if they can do that. They are using the name halo to sell a non MS game.

Like movies, normally you only see "From the creator of" when the studio owns both.

I doubt they would stick it on the box anyway. There will be enough media coverage of the game though that these are the guys who made Halo will be known. Not to mention that fact alone will garner them all sorts of free coverage by the gaming media and even the mainstream media in general. People will follow whatever they do simply because these are the guys who did Halo. There is an expectation or at least the chance that they could create the next big thing, and the media will always follow that story.

Although Bungie's 10-year partnership deal with Activision is primarily tied to the Halo  developer's new as-yet-unnamed action game, that doesn't mean that they won't be working more closely with Activision's other developers.

Speaking with UGO.com today, Bungie community manager Brian Jarrard said that the developer could be tapped to work on Activision titles.

"It's a discussion that might come up, but they partnered with us specifically based on the vision that we have, and the universe and games that we want to bring to the world in the next decade," he said. "Who's to know if there are other discussions where we have chances to work together in other areas, but that wasn't one of the core talking points in making this deal."

When asked if any backend technology developed during the deal would be owned by Bungie or Activision, Jarrard explained that the ownership might be in a "gray area."

"It's pretty hard to quantify because there might be stuff that we specifically do for us, and there might be stuff that stems from collaboration that leverages some technology that they might already have," he said. "I don’t think I can definitively say 'yes' or 'no' to that. I think it's going to be a degree of gray there that it’s just going to be on a case-by-case basis."

However, Jarrad did say that he thinks Bungie will be taking advantage of Activision's experience in multiplatform development.

"We have the opportunity to tap into their expertise and knowledge base certainly when it comes to things like multi-platform development that we, honestly, don't have a lot of current experience with."

As far as what platforms Bungie will develop for using Activision's multi-platform expertise, Jarrard said, "We've considered looking hard at any platform that makes sense for the kind of game that we're trying to make."

And from LA times

Quote
According to people familiar with the situation, the publicly released terms of the Bungie deal are similar to the one that former Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vincent Zampella were seeking before talks broke down and they were fired for alleged breach of contract in attempting to form their own company. They have since signed a deal with Activision’s chief rival, Electronic Arts Inc.

“It’s astonishing how much money Activision had to pay to cover up its horns and pitchforks with a halo,” quipped Bobby Schwartz, West and Zampella’s attorney.

The contract is for ONE franchise if they want to make a different game they can go to any publisher, they are no chained to Activision nor owned by them.

I'm having a great time right now and looking forward.

Me too, can't wait until I have some more free time to jump back in.

Games like Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire wouldn't have been possible before.
