Except, under US law, Obama's not really responsible for cleaning up this mess - BP is!

Also, where is your autonomous state God now, Bobby Jindal? :smug

Whats with all these disasters lately?

Is it because of the planets aligning side by side for the first time in history?

Yeah, this has pretty much become an epic disaster. It has the potential to make the Exxon Valdez look like a footnote in the chapter of man-made environmental blunders.

It's also becoming apparent that BP debated initial estimates of how much oil was leaking, if not outright lied about it altogether. At least the military is on this disaster now, some have recommended requesting engineers from NASA to figure out a way to seal the blowout preventer.

Maybe not! BP is moving forward with a plan to burn the oil slick, but with it touching shore and the fact that the oil well is pouring 210,000 gallons of oil into the ocean per day, I hope you brought your inhaler. :-\

Holy fucking shit.

I hadn't really been paying attention to news since they originally said nothing was going to leak.  They made a huge deal here because my company had 8 people on board that thankfully made it off alive.  But holy shit, this is fucking sad.

I think it was yesterday that they revised their estimate of the spill at 5000 barrels per day from their previous estimate of 1000. Its amazing to me that they don't have a contingency plan in place to stop further leaking.

From the Press-Register:

"Two additional release points were found today. If the riser pipe deteriorates further, the flow could become unchecked resulting in a release volume an order of magnitude higher than previously thought."

In scientific circles, an order of magnitude means something is 10 times larger. In this case, an order of magnitude higher would mean the volume of oil coming from the well could be 10 times higher than the 5,000 barrels a day coming out now. That would mean 50,000 barrels a day, or 2.1 million gallons a day.

Not to mention people two hours away can smell oil.

To give that some perspective, the Exxon Valdez spilled 250,000 barrels. So, if things get worse, and they most likely will, we could see something far worse than that ever was. Plus, the Exxon Valdez spilled its oil all the way up in Alaska.

this is the worst possible time for something like this to happen. they were about to open up the gulf to more drilling and this happens. come on!

seriously, an astronomical amount of shit has to go wrong for something like this to happen.

something like this to happen.

The Fake Shemp

Why is the governement getting involved?  Personally I'd rather we wait for a free market solution to this problem.

BP is supposed to be footing the bill for this operation and taking the initiative, but it's becoming apparent that they have no idea what they're doing - and now the responsibility has been put on the federal government to save the Gulf of Mexico.

Situation looks bleak, we could be looking at the biggest environmental disaster in US history and something that will take decade to recover from.

U.S. Coast Guard responding to overturned oil rig

The U.S. Coast Guard said Friday it was responding to an overturned oil rig in an inland canal near Morgan City, Louisiana.

The rig is not leaking fuel at this time, the Coast Guard said, but 500 feet of containment boom has been deployed around the rig as a precaution.

The mobile inland drilling unit overturned in the Charenton navigational canal, the Coast Guard said.

FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU

Quote from:
The worst-case scenario for the broken and leaking well gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico would be the loss of the wellhead currently restricting the flow to 5,000 barrels --  or 210,000 gallons per day.

If the wellhead is lost, oil could leave the well at a much greater rate, perhaps up to 150,000 barrels -- or more than 6 million gallons per day -- based on government data showing daily production at another deepwater Gulf well.

By comparison, the Exxon Valdez spill was 11 million gallons total. The Gulf spill could end up dumping the equivalent of 4 Exxon Valdez spills per week.

Yeah, Exxon seems to be doing ok after the Valdez.  In fact, I don't think they've paid all of the court ordered settlement yet either.  Pays to be richer than God.

Leaked report: Government fears Deepwater Horizon well could become unchecked gusher
By Ben Raines
April 30, 2010, 2:18PM

'The following is not public' document states
This image provided by the U.S. Coast Guard Saturday April 24, 2010, shows oil leaking from the drill pipe of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig after it sank. A confidential government report on the unfolding spill disaster makes clear the Coast Guard now fears the well could be on the verge of becoming an unchecked gusher shooting millions of gallons of oil per day into the Gulf. A confidential government report on the unfolding spill disaster in the Gulf makes clear the Coast Guard now fears the well could become an unchecked gusher shooting millions of gallons of oil per day into the Gulf.

"The following is not public," reads the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Emergency Response document dated April 28. "Two additional release points were found today in the tangled riser. If the riser pipe deteriorates further, the flow could become unchecked resulting in a release volume an order of magnitude higher than previously thought."

Asked Friday to comment on the document, NOAA spokesman Scott Smullen said that the additional leaks described were reported to the public late Wednesday night. Regarding the possibility of the spill becoming an order of magnitude larger, Smullen said, "I'm letting the document you have speak for itself."

The Fake Shemp

MOUTH OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER - British Petroleum downplayed the possibility of a catastrophic accident at an offshore rig that exploded, causing the worst U.S. spill in decades along the Gulf coast and endangering shoreline habitat, documents suggest.

In the 52-page exploration plan and environmental impact analysis, BP repeatedly suggested it was unlikely, or virtually impossible, for an accident to occur that would lead to a giant crude oil spill and serious damage to beaches, fish, mammals and fisheries.

...

BP's plan filed with the federal Minerals Management Service for the Deepwater Horizon well, dated February 2009, says repeatedly that it was "unlikely that an accidental surface or subsurface oil spill would occur from the proposed activities."

And while the company conceded that a spill would "cause impacts" to beaches, wildlife refuges and wilderness areas, it argued that "due to the distance to shore (48 miles) and the response capabilities that would be implemented, no significant adverse impacts are expected."

NICE JOB, BP. :lol
