Sometimes I see them on street corners listening to loud music from boomboxes and acting all sassy.

Then I quickly walk across the street and grip the can of mace in my front pocket - just in case.

I used to find it amusing when older white ladies would give me wary looks/clutch their purses as I walk by. One time I was walking up the ramp to my dad's practice, and some chick was ahead of me. She turned around, saw I was behind her, and starting speed walking up the ramp all while casually glancing back at me. I smh and keep walking. Get into the door and the lady is talking to my dad nervously, and then he says"oh this is my son. Maurice, this is our lawyer." smh

When I hear this shit I really get depressed. Or more like, just severely disappointed in the human race. I had a black friend who said when he walked into a Starbucks this white girl and her boyfriend were walking by and when they got near him they sped up and she whispered "Watch out, angry black man".

Like what the fuck.

Black people remind me that I'm black more than white people because apparently I don't fit into the standard 'black person' model.

My parents remind me every day to work harder than white people because even if you're talented as a black person, you're still black.

When I was 5 I had a "girlfriend", and we exchanged rings (ring pops, cherry flavor), she told me later on that her parents said she couldn't have a black boyfriend. I think that was the first time I realized I was actually different.

I dunno. A lot of things remind me the fact that I'm black.

Black people remind me blatantly, while white people usually remind me in an oblivious manner. A black person might ask me what I'm listening to on my iPod, and when I say "uh Pink Floyd/Joanna Newsom/MF DOOM/etc" they're like "lol I meant what black music are you listening to." Compare that to a 30 something-year-old white person at school, after I put my iPod away: "so I heard Tupac has a new album out"

Yes, it is very apparent in the south but I refuse to believe places like Calfornia or Michigan or Chicago or even NYC which are places that have had tons of racial tension in the past are considerably less racially inclined than the south. California especially.

Theory:

Black people liking certain anime has to do with tribal instinct. "Hey I wanna see Goku punch that guy in the face!" = "Hey, let's watch Mike Tyson cream that guy!" Which is a part of the reason black people like sports and fighting games so much. We like to fight.

There are examples of racial tension where ever you go in the United States or on this Planet. Just like I'm certain you could be anywhere and run into examples of it. And I'm sure if I had grown up in South Central where the demographics and ethnic tensions are different my take would be different.

I can definitely tell you however as someone who has mostly lived in either California or the South for most of his life that it is indeed very different. And on average there is far less racial tension in nearly every aspect of life. Which doesn't mean it doesn't exist at all. It just means by comparison it is far less. Especially among younger people.

Prince of Tennis is this anime where a bunch of tennis players have at it and kick each others asses with tennis balls. It is a textbook case of competition and animu.

You're definitely right and it's one of the many reasons I want to bail out of the south asap.

I know Texas doesn't count as part of the South as it's in the central region, but I noticed differences just going to places like Portland. What part of California are you at? Couldn't be NoCal, right? :lol

In Korea I learned that you can't know what it's like to be a minority unless you are one. I'm not saying my experience compares to a black person's, 'cuz it doesn't. But here I'm occasionally outraged when a taxi driver asks to see my money before he takes me anywhere or when an older Korean tells my girlfriend she shouldn't be boning a foreigner. Then I get at least a small idea for what daily life is like for black people. When it comes to racial stereotypes, even trivialities can be infuriating, and I vastly underestimated how annoying it could be.

if you don't know what prince of tennis is, that is a different story.  the gay subtext in that series makes this forum seem mormon.
