Satoru Iwata, the Nintendo president, is understood to have told his senior executives recently to regard the battle with Sony as a victory already won and to treat Apple, and its iPhone and iPad devices, as the “enemy of the future” .

I think it would be foolish for Nintendo to consider the battle over with.

Resting on your laurels while the enemy gets his shit together is a big mistake.

Anyways, Apple pose no immediate threat to Nintendo. Actual games will always triumph against $.99 'games'.

Got it during the .99 Capcom sale with G&G. Originally it was a port of the Cellphone version, but after complaints they re-did it to be the NES version. Beat it twice already.

All of the EA board games are great on the iPhone/Touch/iPad, except for Clue. How they fucked that one up is a mystery.

I think the issue is that the "non-gamers" that Nintendo has been going after would rather just get an iPad then a DS. This "war with Apple" is going to be over the non-gamers. The iPad and its apps basically do all the non-game shit that Nintendo has been pushing recently.

Finally, some common sense in this thread.  Nintendo is threatened by Apple due to mindshare.  All the casual DS users, can just settle for their Sudoku clones for 99 cents on their iPhones/iPods and not need to carry an extra device just to play games.  Nintendo is definitely threatened by that.

Moreover, there is high quality stuff in the sea of garbage on the iPhone and the price advantage is ridiculous.  Peggle for the DS retails for 30 bucks MSRP and the iPhone version for a fraction of that.  If the mass market consumer get used to getting games for 5 bucks on the App Store, it will hurt Nintendo in the long run.

I still do think that Nintendo has the youth market cornered, though.

Those are .99 'games', here, ask Manabyte:

"Got it during the .99 Capcom sale" - Manabyte

The iPhone/iPod Touch are great Mp3 players, absolutely horrendous gaming machines.

Actually you know what, one can argue the N.Gage is more of a gaming platform than the iPhone/iTouch.

You know what I meant when I said .98 'games'. There's a ton of crap on the ApStore that's barely considered a flash game.

But I guess Ntards have to protect the hive at all costs.

Square just came out with a 3D JRPG called Chaos Rings that's exclusive to it instead of PSP.

I agree.  Although I think Nintendo would get beaten if it tried to go up against Apple.  Nintendo generally hates people doing anything other than play games on their consoles (or more specifically, playing anything other than Nintendo games) and to go up against Apple would require a radical shift in their policy.  Nintendo won't do it.

Maybe it means the 3DS will have cheaper gimmick games but given the multifunctional iPhone, iPod, and iPad, this is a battle that Nintendo will lose.  Although they can just spin it to make it look like they don't want to compete with Apple so fanboys can bleat out to smug Apple fans that in spite of early PR :derp

It's too late for Nintendo to try to compete with Apple. Apple has the ApStore established with companies like EA and Square (who's working on an original FF for it now) and Nintendo would NEVER give up their big licensing fees to allow companies like that sell full EA Sports games or long 3D JRPGs for $10 a pop.

Yeah, I'm not sure about that.  I like my iPhone as a phone with some interesting gimmicks but I never could see myself using it as an Mp3 player.  That's what I got my Nano and iPod Classic for.

I really don't understand why people bother with the iPod Touch to be honest.  No phone (VOIP doesn't count), no internet access outside of a wi-fi hotspot and a lot of the useful apps require some kind of connection, shitty Mp3 player with limited capacity, and the games just aren't there yet but I'll admit they're getting better.  The iPod Touch just seems like a waste of money.

It depends on where you are. In Japan, the iPhone is carried by Softbank, and requires a 2 year contract. At any time during the coverage period, if the iPhone is lost, they'll charge your normal rate PLUS an additional 10K yen a month until the end of the contract. Alternately one can buy a new iPhone for 80K yen (it may have been 60K now, I can't recall offhand). Anyway, the contract seemed to require that I punch myself in the dick if I screw up, so I'd rather have an iPod Touch, which doesn't require it be repurchased or have punishment fees if I misplace it.

As for why I prefer it to my previous iPod 5G, it was 60GB and my Touch is 64, so no loss in volume -- and I am either at home or work, both of which offer wifi access.

Nintendo won't go head to head with Apple, that would be stupid and it would cost to much.More subtle :ninja approach is needed, work in shadows and sabotage your competitors silently...Nintendo is good at that

They now have unique chance of totally locking Japan...ok,they rule there, but people are still buying competitor products.
Release 3DS this year and then after few months announce Wii 5D and work on getting third-party popular games(for Wii 5D,3DS is going to have them anyway).
Sony headquarters would go boom.

As for the west, competition is much stronger and Nintendo fails in online, but things can change
They have casuals, but if that group finds another gimmick to play with...well

Shigeru Miyamoto has said that Nintendo needs to decide whether to stick with its free online gaming service or introduce a paid subscription model.

Online-compatible Wii and DS titles are currently free to play using Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection service, but in a recent interview Miyamoto suggested this could change.

“… Probably the other thing that we are desperate to realise is the core [online] business structure,” Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis and Development boss told us. “Do we need to demand customers pay monthly fees to enjoy online activities? Or give an online subscription that is free of charge, but then offer something extra for people that pay, so that they get some extra value? With these core business strategies I think we are less active than we should be.”

Chaos Rings is the vanguard of what Nintendo, the maker of the fabulously popular DS handheld console, and Sony, the maker of the PlayStation Portable, should have been fearing the last several years: that eventually major developers and publishers like Square Enix would start making iPhone-exclusive titles every bit as professional and polished as the games for their own systems. Chaos Rings costs $12.99 at Apple’s App Store — expensive for an iPhone game — but this product would easily find buyers at $29.99 on the DS or PlayStation Portable.

I’ll go even further. As an overall entertainment and design experience, Chaos Rings is more successful and ultimately more enjoyable than Final Fantasy XIII, the big-budget, high-definition home console blockbuster that Square Enix released in North America last month.

Quote
What is shocking, however, is that Chaos Rings is actually more open-ended and more empowering for the player than Final Fantasy XIII. In Final Fantasy XIII the player spends dozens and dozens of hours on entirely linear paths with no ability to decide where to go or what to do next. In Chaos Rings, by contrast, you must first choose between two completely different sets of characters and different story arcs. The game soon opens up to give the player multiple choices of what sort of environments to explore and what sort of foes to battle.

After 12 hours with Final Fantasy XIII, I was already gritting my teeth at the tedium, no matter how gorgeous it was. After nearly the same amount of time with Chaos Rings this week, I’m champing at the bit to keep going. The game’s three-dimensional animation is by far the best I have seen on the iPhone.

They went from #3 to #1 and made more money this generation than both the Ps3 and Xbox 360 combined.

Sony on the other hand went from #1 to #3 and has been failing on the Ps3 since its launch. If they get lucky (i.e Project Natal fails to catch on), the Ps3 will end up surpassing the 360 and be seated in 2nd place for this gen.

Hardly a victory for a company that sold 130 million consoles last gen.

Nintendo's constant almost weekly need to try and back handedly dis Apple/iphone/ipad gaming.

Weekly Apple disses? I seem to have missed those, can you provide the weekly disses for the last 8 weeks? Should be a fun read...

...because if memory serves correct, it's been Apple taking shots at both the Nintendo Ds and PsP ever since the launch of the iPod Touch.

Hmm, I wonder why Apple has been trying to compare the iTouch to the DS and PsP at every single one of their press conferences. It's like their product isn't really meaningful to actual gamers? Like, by drawing direct comparisons to other products gives their product relevancy in the other products market?

No, I'm sure it's more like, "Developers who are not developing on iPhone yet. Look at this. You could be making money."

No, I'm positive it's more like, "Our research has shown that we're completely irrelevant in mobile gaming in comparison to the Nintendo DS. Let's convince lactating moms that quantity > quality, cue graph with overused gradient."

Something like that.

If that's what's stopping you from getting an iTouch then that's kind of silly because iTunes on Windows is just fine.  It may be a resource hog but the program itself runs perfectly.

Oh, so just games?

Then the Ps3 isn't really a failure in that regard. The first year was rough, but the present library is incredible.

I'd definitely put Uncharted 2 right up there with Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 64, and Ocarina of Time.
