No.

The iPhone is a threat as a portable multimedia device, so realistically, it's Sony who have to up the ante with the PSP 2.

As a portable gaming platform, the iPhone is a joke compared to the DS.

But anyone who has played games for years should know that right now it's stale as all hell. It would be much better to just quit and do something useful in the meantime. When things get better, we can start playing again.

I can't agree with this. A lot of the huge massive budget titles have sort of congealed into fast-paced dude-bro first-person shootering, but there's so much variety coming in through smaller developers and two-man groups and from Europe that have been plugging some of the holes left by the big-time American developers.

So the Wii has tanked from a games perspective. Okay, I think most people here agree with that. I also think most people agree with what I've said about the major Western devs as well. But it's hardly the case that they aren't making anything worth playing. I've got a whole huge list of games I'd like to be playing, I just don't have the money at the moment to get them, so I'm playing some of the smaller, cheaper titles [along with catching up on my backlog] and I don't really regret it at all.

except it's not. Shame. At least your Blingyendough overlords aren't as dumb as their fanbase and can see that the iphone/pad are something to be concerned about.

Yeah, the iPhone is definitely on par with the DS in terms of portable gaming.

You're right. It's superior to the DS both in hardware power and publisher support.

Make a $6 iPhone port of a $30 DS game, sell 50,0000 copies.

Everyone ignoring or negatively spinning the iPhone/iPad as gaming devices have their head in the sand. You can claim it's not a similar gaming experience, and not appealing to gamers. Which is correct, it's appealing to everyone, which is a much larger market.

Nintendo pushed DS into the multimedia space with the introduction of DSi, and PSP games are a few degrees of separation further from the iPhone than DS games are.

Fruit Ninja is by Australiand dev Halfbrick Studios which is where Rlan from Gamerbytes works.

Joystiq: You sent out a press release before the weekend claiming 140,000 copies sold of your iPhone/iPod Touch game, Fruit Ninja. What's the current total at?

Luke Muscat: Over 200,000 now. That's a pretty big milestone for us, we are very happy to have achieved such great success in a market that can be pretty unpredictable. If you're reading this and have purchased the game – you rule the App store!

eat it ninthings!

52,000 $1.99 tilt and flick games at 150,000 copies each = 7 BILLION 800 MILLION PIECES OF SOFTWARE SOLD.  Thus, iPhone quality is better than HD consoles.

What stuff have you played on the Iphone?

Examples.

I don't have an iPhone, but I've used my brothers Touch to play the definitive iPod game:

Sooo... Nintendo is increasingly going after the casual market, which means shallow flash games and Farmville type shits galore.

And on the consoles, all you have is your extremely high-budget market-tested games, afraid to take risks.

What happens to the mid budget, niche, outside of the mainstream games (usually the games I like fall into this category) after all this?

Hey, it's weird that iPhone got Chinatown Wars and not Liberty City Stories, considering that it's Sony who should be worried about Apple.

you played Scrabble - which, online, is still a great game - but hey - if you want to claim you know how the entire iphone games catalogue is off -one- title then be my guest to run around with your 'tard flag flying.

Quote

you aren't - third party developers do it all the time, looks like more and more are voting with their feet too.

Case here is a little different - you're trying to make some point about a DS game being ported, when the reason it was ported was it's failure on the host platform, whilst on the iphone it's been full of win.

Weird you wouldn't mention this game-so-great-it-got-ported as one of the host of premium titles on the iphone. But hey, doesn't matter. You don't think the iphone is a threat, nintendo do, and day on day more iphone games get made, downloaded and played. Sucks for you to miss out.

Anyways, list of great portable games content on iphone , off the top of my head - there's a fuckton more:

Esp.Ga.Luda 2
Canabalt
Chaos Rings
Angry Birds
Space Invaders: Infinity Gene
Dungeon Hunter
Football Manager 2010
Field Runners
Fargoal
Bejeweled 2
Retro Defense
WordJong
Drop7

No, the case isn't different at all. But I absolutely commend you for trying to convince me otherwise.

Now, as for those great iPhone games...I really think you're joking, 'cause if you're seriously trying to tell me that the iPhone is on the same level as the DS due to WordJong and Bejeweled, then well, maybe you should get back to talking about 3rd party sales on Nintendo platforms.

As for Apple being a future threat to Nintendo, you know, maybe you're right. Maybe after a dozen more ports, the iPhone will be a viable gaming platform like/as the DS.

I didn't say anything about popularity. If I did then shit like Scribblenauts would be included and that's hardly a game.

Scribblenauts is a great Nintendo DS game, I have no doubt that Scribblenauts 2 will address some of the complaints lodged at Scribblenauts 1.

Depends on what you consider good and what you consider great.

No, I agree. The problem with ds is the distinct lack of action-based games. It's a big story-based system, and honestly, games like rpgs are best on tvs so you can soak them in, in my opinion. This is why I prefer psp: more emphasis on pick up and play games. Now that's not to say ds doesn't have great pick up and play games.

Yoshi's Island ds and Canvas Curse are the shit.
