I've played a lot of games on that metacritic list, but I don't see anything that I would actually call great. Most DS games are forgettable and leave no impression. Or maybe it's just me. Maybe I have a problem with handheld games.

No, I agree. The problem with ds is the distinct lack of action-based games. It's a big story-based system, and honestly, games like rpgs are best on tvs so you can soak them in, in my opinion. This is why I prefer psp: more emphasis on pick up and play games. Now that's not to say ds doesn't have great pick up and play games.

Yoshi's Island ds and Canvas Curse are the shit.

I still need to try YI DS.

Defending the DS against such baseless accusations IS the good fight, Eel. It just boggles my mind that anyone can look at the DS's amazing library of world-class, original titles and think that it's anything other than the best lineup since the SNES. Just don't get it at all. But as if that weren't bad enough, we've got people coming in here and trying to compare it to the iPhone? EL-OH-EL. The iPhone's games can't hold a candle to the DS, the later is so many lightyears ahead that the difference is incalculable. But, no, all those people have an agenda to besmirch Nintendo and try to sway other people's opinion's against the DS. It's a bit disgusting actually, but they actually know better. They know that the DS has a great libary, but they just can't stand to see a Nintendo system succeed. Everyone knows the PSP can't match up, so they go to the iPhone because it's less well known. They can trot out a few weird 2D shooters or some hackneyed FF-lite and throw out pictures of neat graphics and everyone "Oh's" and "Ah's" over them as if they're something amazing. Here's a hint: they're not. DS is where it's at and the sooner people start admitting this, the better. Afaik, none of the people who listed the iPhone games actually think that its current library is better, but assuming that Nintendo was referring to the casual market in statement Manabyte posted, then yes, they have a right to at least get worried; the iPhone has already proven itself as a viable platform to host a wide range of casual titles.  

I'm dead serious, Jin. The DS is my absolute passion, I love everything about it. I could rattle off at least fifty titles from memory that are worth buying and will become classics one day. I'm not going to do that right now, because a list war is pretty pointless but I just want all you guys to know how deep my knowledge of the DS's library really is. I'm not just spouting off without knowing, I know what I'm talking about. It just really irks me that some people set themselves up as "experts" and their view from the top of the hill is that the DS is some videogame stepchild to their beloved iPhone.

I mean, even if you compare the cream of the crop of the snes to the best of the ds, the ds gets stomped. snes was an awfully varied system and complimented the genesis perfectly. Both systems had their genre expertise and they did this flawlessly. I can't say the same for the ds. ds has a lot of good games, some great games even! - but few classic games. I can think of lots of classic games for the snes: Super Castlevania 4, Pocky and Rocky, Super R-Type, Chrono Trigger, Mega Man X/X2, ActRaiser...I can't think of anything on ds that matches these games and the ds counterparts to these games - the Metroidvania's, Mega Man ZX games for example - pale to the snes entries.

The whole thing is just bollocks. No, the ds is not better than the snes and it's not better than the psx or ps2 either. STOP SAYING THIS, NTARDS. Is it because how damn popular the system is that makes them make this claim?

Is it so hard for a system to just be a REALLY GOOD SYSTEM that you enjoy? I just don't understand the thought process of saying that the ds has the best game lineup since the snes. Where do you get such limited gaming history? What about the dreamcast? or the ps2? or the psx? or the saturn? ds doesn't have the variety to back up such a claim, so it always comes off as extremist garbage.

And yet every time you see someone critique the ds' lineup, the ds fanbots line up suggesting you're crazy for not thinking it's the best lineup ever. Am I missing something?

I'm still dying to know what's wrong with Pokemon.

There's nothing wrong with it. In fact it's deceptively simple gameplay was so solid/addictive it hasn't needed changing all that much to remain popular. I can't handle them anymore though personally, tbh after the first one the franchise went downhill for me. I enjoyed gold and even a GBA one but they're all too similar to give you a real feeling of differentiation between games.

I really don't give a shit about portables even though I've bought just about every one of them out there.  Sure during the first month or so I become obsessed with the things but my interest dies off pretty damn quick.  I couldn't even tell you the last time I bothered to pick up my PSP and FFIV was probably the only game on the DS that I liked enough to put substantial time in.  My iPhone is really no different.  At first I was downloading games and apps like a fucking madman but the thrill is long gone and now I'll only grab something if I'm completely bored, but that's the thing with the iphone/itouch - it's incredibly easy to get your fix and that's got to be bothersome to Nintendo.  I could defintely foresee the iphone/touch grabbing a large part of the portable scene from Nintendo but if Apple is really serious about it becoming a gaming device they're going to have to consider offering a model with some other kind of input besides the touchscreen - like a flip out d-pad and buttons.

Maybe to you, I don't think the DC is overrated at all. I think nostalgia tricks a lot of people into thinking it was greater than it actually is, but the hype it gets is completely deserved. The DC was an arcade-at-home BEAST.
