I don't think I've ever watched an episode of Law and Order from beginning to end although I've flipped by it enough. Like 99% of Network TV its just sort of irrelevant to me although I had nothing especially against the show.

Same with CSI which I've also never seen an episode of.

For what its worth I really liked that first season of Heroes. I know a lot of people were disappointed by the finale that season but my only real gripe was that they didn't kill Sylar at that point. It set a really bad precedent for the show and it quickly nose dived. That season 2 and the first half of season three were so god damn awful I bailed after that and never watched anymore and I consider myself a fairly tolerant TV viewer. It takes a lot to actually make me stop watching a show I've decided to invest myself in.

I think I watch at least part of an episode, or two, every day.

And they cancelled Law & Order Prime, but they're replacing it with the new Law & Order: Los Angeles.

In it's prime Law and Order was the fucking model for how to make a television show that relied on the same fucking formula every single episode interesting.  CSI never even got close.

Back in the day you could set your watch to an episode of L&O.  At 11 minutes they talk to the hot dog vendor with perfect recall ("I remember that guy, he wanted mustard and said something about pawning off a diamond bracelet").  37 minutes in the smarmy defense lawyer tells Jack McCoy he's going to present a motion to suppress, thanks to Detective Briscoe taking the most expansive view of search warrants ever*.  At 41 minutes, McCoy is convincing a reluctant Adam Schiff to let him proceed with the case, but Schiff tells him they need to go back to the evidence and rebuild their case.

I always resented L&O a bit for being so popular while the vastly superior Homicide: Life On The Streets flirted with cancellation its entire lifespan, but I respect the craft.

I liked the first season of Heroes too.  The idea behind Heroes was even kind of cool.  It made people having super powers seem like real people.  It showed that superheroes didn't have to dress up in capes to save people.  They just took a really hard turn for shit-creek after season one...

Glad to see they finally put it out of it's misery.

I think the first season was good also because it tapped into that super hero fantasy and it transitioned pretty well from normal people to normal people starting to acquire these fantastic powers. But once that actually happened in Season 2 and beyond they had no idea how to write for it and plot for it. And they really couldn't do a show like a superhero movie on a weekly basis with their budget.

I think Heroes was just like Prison Break in that a second season wasn't on the cards until the show became incredibly popular.

And LOST is just  :-\ , they relied on mystery to give the show longevity and now that the show is ending it's becoming clear all their 'mysteries' were just a series of bad writing.

They don't put on a network show unless they have hopes of it at least running 5 or 6 seasons with 22 episode seasons. The problem is with the network TV model. Prison Break was a limited concept that only should have run 2 or 3 seasons at max and it should have been announced that way at the very beginning so they could have plotted properly.

Heroes simply had no long term plotting. They just did whatever felt good at the moment instead of worrying about the long term which completely fucked up their story.

I'd like to see American TV pick up on model used by most anime, as in: one season of 13 or 26 episodes that tells a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end that's plotted mostly in advance. This doesn't need to be some iron-clad rule that every show follows, but it's such a pain to get invested in a series that runs for five or six seasons and then gets cancelled without a proper ending or has a really disappointing ending because most of the show was just written from one episode to the next.

Jeph Loeb is the Rob Liefeld of comic writers and shouldn't be allowed to run a superhero TV show.

Heroes Season 1 was a shitty rip-off of Watchmen. After that Loeb just started re-doing X-Men story lines from the 80s and 90s and hoping no one would notice.

Agreed. Cable has the right approach which is why HBO and cable networks generally have superior programming. Not every concept needs to be stretched to 22 episode seasons that last years and years.

I understand why they do it. Syndication and advertising. It's just not really effective for creating diverse and good entertainment.

I'd like to see that myself, but beyond some rumbling from Dick Wolf and NBC mentioning that they'd be kind of interested in showing it on American TV there really hasn't been any movement on that front. If nothing else, they should let PBS show it.
