I do agree that the North American anime industry has been dying for a long time now after they totally oversaturated the market with anything and everything. However, Bandai responded to Bang Zoom's rant a while back, actually. Bang Zoom is just pissy because of many things getting released sub-only and they're not getting any work.

I will buy things on Blu-ray, but few companies are interested in doing so. If Bandai Ent. would actually put out the Gundam movies (F-91, CCA), Gundam 00 and Geass on Blu-ray, I'd gladly give them money. I'm done with getting things on DVD when I know that HD masters exist. Until then, they'll get my money for the quarterly Gundam UC Blu-ray volume, and Funimation will get the rest of my anime money because they actually know how to release things on Blu-ray. DVD-only releases can suck it.

Anime is doomed unless they can get digital distro working.  With shows like Tatami Galaxy and House of Five Leaves (best two shows this year) available legitimately on funimations site for streaming, I don't think many people are bothering to pirate it.  If the ads from doing this are enough to support the costs of the show then I think Japan has found their solution (although they need to stream them on the Japan-side as well).  If that's not enough income...well they're fucked.
Is this why I haven't been able to find House of Five Leaves torrents? I can't access funimation streams or hulu since that's all america and I'm in scandinavia, the region that absolutely no one bothers with on the internet. :'(

for me, anime is like punk music in that there's a whole shitload of it and about 98% is crap

the difference is that punk music knows its cheap and sells itself cheap, while anime prices itself like its some elegant media for the connoisseur

the second problem is that media delivery and where people expect to get their media has changed and businesses don't want to change

Yep, Funimation is doing pretty well. They also do their dubs in-house.

I'm not saying that the anime industry in America is doing well or anything, but the big reason for Bang Zoom!'s whiny rant is because they're not getting steady work doing dubs.

No, but they're playing a bit loose with the facts.

Bandia dumped a bunch of their employees because the company as a whole was seeing huge losses, CPM has been nonexistent for nearly a decade, and ADV got screwed when one of their major licensors pulled out [they quickly reemerged as a set of five companies that took over most of ADV's assets and operations].

I've recently purchased:

Gundam Unicorn Volume 1 (blu-ray)
Evangelion 1.11 (blu-ray)
Eureka Seven: Good night, sleep tight, young lovers (blu-ray)
Ponyo (blu-ray)

If Bandai Ent. would release Geass and Gundam 00 on blu-ray, I'd buy them DAY ONE.

I really can't watch anime. Is Dragon Ball Z anime? Then that's the only anime I've watched.

I also tried to watch Naruto, Cowboy Bebpob and Bleach. But stopped watching after 10 episoded because they were gay.

I love anime movies like Spirited Away and Ponyo, though.

I read nerdy books and listen to nerdy music but I've never been interested in anime at all.  Anime watchers/producers as a whole don't seem to realize that their products are almost completely uninteresting to people who aren't already hardcore fans.  No wonder they're failing.

One of the problems is that there's a lot of anime out there and most of it is really generic and pretty much a carbon copy of everything else. It makes it hard for people that aren't familiar with anime to know what's good and what isn't without digging through a heap of trash first.

I wouldn't argue that point. I was a poor graduate student when Igloo came out, and it's now out of print and uber expensive.

I do download a lot, I admit. But most of what I download is what is considered prohibited and forbidden in Saudi Arabia. I can't even have it shipped from amazon since the religious police take it and don't even pay us back(had a lot of problems with that in the past).

Then maybe you should consider armed revolution to get rid of the repressive Saudi tyranny?

I believe the term is "regime change." :rock

I just wanted to respond to the letter...

Quote
From the desk of the President of Bang Zoom! Entertainment, Eric P. Sherman:

Who the fuck is "Bang Zoom!"?  Ah, they specialize in dubbing.  So I already don't care!

Quote

If people don’t resist the urge to get their fix illegally, the entire industry is about to fizzle out. It won’t be a big dramatic change at this point. Last year we saw Bandai fire 90% of their staff on one Monday in January, and two years ago we saw Geneon (neé Pioneer) shut their doors and auction off their wares to the highest bidder. CPM died a slow, painful death. And ADV fell hard and fast, the way mighty giants will.

Yup, fansubs are killing off the American market.  It's easy to see why when it takes forever for licensed titles to make it out here and they are available as fansubs almost immediately after airing in Japan.

Quote
But from here on, it won’t be so exciting. Japan is already suffering and struggling to bring out quality titles. They can’t rely on everything being picked up by US distributors anymore. And little by little, it just won’t be here anymore.[/b]

And this isn't a HUGE part of the problem?  Hey, maybe if they stopped making shitty shows and releasing nothing but moe moe uguuuuuu~, things might pick up a bit!
Quote
You can’t find much anime at Best Buy now. In fact, where can you find it for sale? Think about that.

Best Buy, the local comic book store, online on places like Amazon...basically the same places that have always sold this stuff.  Oh, and Best Buy's prices are way too high.  Only an idiot would buy a new release there.  I have seen new sets come out for $80 at Best Buy that are $40 on Amazon.

Quote
There are fewer new titles coming out, and less and less stuff will be in English, because it’s just not worth the cost of dubbing it.

So don't dub it.  If you're not able to get a television deal, who fucking cares?  Release it subbed...wouldn't you be saving money and be able to release stuff faster this way?

Oh, right-- your company doesn't bring stuff out, all you do is voice work.  No wonder "u mad."

Quote
Anime is going to die.

No, I think you mean "overpriced American anime releases are going to stop being released, and nobody is going to care because they are downloading/streaming everything anyway!"

Quote
Unless YOU change. Right now. Stop stealing. If you have committed theft, robbery, shop-lifting, or just “downloading some stuff through torrent reactor,”  then just stop doing it — now.  You probably wouldn’t go into a supermarket and put a package of swiss cheese under your shirt and walk out without paying. Nor would you walk into Best Buy and try to walk out with Guitar Hero, bypassing the cash register. Why? Is it because you might get caught? Or are there other issues, such as standards of morality, that dictate how you live your life.

So I'm "stealing" if I watch One Piece online, which Funimation allows?  Am I "stealing" if I watch a show that was aired for free on Japanese television via the internet?  Eric P. Sherman has never borrowed a VHS tape from somebody or a DVD-R of some show he missed?

Quote
The net, for all it’s charms, is also a dark and dangerous place. When you’re navigating it, you need to ask yourself this question:  Is this right, just because it is so easy? You need to understand that quality entertainment costs a lot to create. And if there is no one paying for this content, it just won’t be made anymore. If no one bought tickets to a Lady Ga Ga show, she would not do the tour. That’s just how it works. For some reason, people don’t mind stealing their anime. I’m here to tell you flat out: This is wrong. You are doing something bad. And you need to stop it.

You'd have something here if 95% of everything being streamed/offered for download were all DVDs/blu-rays, but they're not.  They're television episodes.  Get with the times and change.  Offer these episodes in high quality at competitive prices online.  Bring out related merchandise for them.  Fanboys can't steal animu figures, posters, model kits, otaku food, and titty mousepads.  Release TV series on DVD/blu-ray at lower prices.  $40 works for me, not $80.
Quote
I’m sure that some of you reading this will laugh, close this window, and go download some more torrents. Why not? Who’s going to know? Who’s going to catch you?

Yeah, pretty much!

Quote
I think this bears repetition, so I’ll say it again: Not getting caught does not make what you are doing right. And I am pretty sure it doesn’t make you feel good about yourself.  What you are doing is not only illegal, it is actually hurting many people. From the artists and creators, to the voice actors in the studios — all working to put food on their tables for their families. You can’t see them, and you can’t see the immediate results of your actions. But believe me, you are hurting people.

You know what I think is hurting people?  The laughably-low wages that people in the anime industry make in Japan.  You can make more money FLIPPING BURGERS AT MCDONALD'S than drawing animation, for fuck's sake.

If what I’m saying resonates with you, then consider this a wake up call. A call to immediate and profound action. It’s very easy to do.  You should support anime if you love it, by paying for it.

Oh, I do.  I do buy the shows/movies I like.  Or rather, I would if there were any recent shows/movies that I thought were worth buying!  The ones I like, BTW?  THEY AREN'T AVAILABLE FOR ME TO BUY.

Do the right thing. Plain and simple. Because if you don’t, I can guarantee you that this time next year, Bang Zoom won’t be bringing you anymore English language versions of it.

Nobody cares.

To all of those who support anime: a heartfelt thank you from all of us at the studio.

An addendum from me: Viz recently fired 55 of its staff and closed its New York office.  It seems the view from the hill is that anime is definitely on its way out (to no one's tears?).

If anime is on the way out, it goes further than just nerds downloading shows off the internet.  There are a lot of other factors that need to be looked at.  Japan's anime industry is in dire need of a wake-up call.

You do know that Americans pretty much hate all immigrants nowadays, right?  Not just hispanic ones?  In fact, after the Times Square attempted bombing, I think you are pretty much fucked if you are thinking of going to the US.

Bandai Entertainment currently has the second season of Haruhi Suzumiya in the pipeline.  If that doesn't sell enough to be profitable, they're going to close their North American branch by the end of the year, according to Bang Zoom! Entertainments president.

Maybe Bandai Entertainment shouldn't be putting everything they have on Haruhi.  Wasn't the second season universally panned by Japanese otaku?

I like some anime, but I still think it's only entertaining to a small portion of the population. I have no delusions that it will ever be accepted by the masses.

Right.  Anime (in America) has had its day in the sun.  It was always a fad that peaked in the late 90s/early 2000s with the likes of Dragonball Z and Gundam Wing.  Now it's back to being a smaller-scale fanboy attraction.  Still much more popular than it was before the anime boom started in the mid-90s, but smaller-scale nonetheless.  And I still do believe the biggest problem with anime now is that most of it sucks.  There's tons and tons of manga out there to cull source material from, but the industry is stuck making uguuu shows because that's what the otaku will buy.  It's really messed up when the selling points for a lot of DVD/blu-ray releases are some nudity and more panty shots.

The only way these anime companies are going to survive here is if they all band together to make an iTunes-like service, where you can purchase shows online for a buck or two.  I have never used Crunchyroll before; is this how they operate?

Himu made a GAF thread.  Here's the first few replies:

BangZoom would say that, but from what I understand, there work seems to be fairly sub-standard. Blaming this entity know as the 'business as a whole' seems like a scapegoat manoeuvre to try and cover up for their own failings.

*yawn*

piracy sure is a convenient scapegoat for your shitty sales numbers, huh?

Quote from: survivor
I remember reading about this some time ago, and people on other forums were talking about how the CEO is pissed off cause his company isn't getting anymore dubbing work cause anime companies are doing the dubbing themselves. So I don't know if he is the right person to listen to about the future.

Also shouldn't this be more about anime dubs rather than anime itself?

Crunchyroll Sees Unprecedented Growth in Q1 2010

Number One Anime Website Crunchyroll.com Sees Great Opportunities in Helping Traditional Media Companies Grow Audiences and Build Businesses Online

San Francisco, Calif. (May 3, 2010) – Crunchyroll, Inc., reported today an over 40% compounded quarter on quarter revenue growth for the last five quarters. Q1 2010 revenue experienced over 250% growth, against the same quarter last year. Crunchyroll's revenue is driven by the ‘freemium’ business model made up of advertising-supported and subscription streaming as well as virtual goods, monetizing professionally produced content through direct relationships with Japanese licensors and broadcasters.

“With over 5.5 million unique visitors serving 21.8 million video views and over 100 million pageviews in the month of March, Crunchyroll is the most engaged community for anime in the world. We are able to deliver a complete cross-platform experience through our website, branded social applications—including the Naruto Shippūden Official Facebook Application—set-top box products like Boxee and the Crunchyroll iPhone iPad application. Crunchyroll is at the forefront of building online audience and engagement around professional content with our in-house video, social, mobile and device experiences,” said James Lin, VP of Product.

According to comScore data, during the six month period leading into March 2010 (since Sept 2009), Crunchyroll realized 25% growth in unique US visitors, while Funimation saw 7% growth in US visitors during the same period. According to Quantcast analytics, over the last 30 days, Crunchyroll reached 1,336,000 unique US visitors, while Funimation recorded 157,400 US visitors. Both destinations are measured directly by Quantcast.

“Creating an Internet presence is about cultivating a two-way relationship with the user; the old model of neglecting content on one-way video site has become less and less effective.” said Vince Shortino, Representative Director of Crunchyroll's Japan office. “Through our expertise in building online engagement, we look forward to working with more traditional media companies that want to reach their core audiences, grow revenue, and maximize shareholder value.”

“Over one year ago, we pioneered the ‘freemium’ content business model, which balances advertising with subscription revenue. Today, anime is becoming mainstream and Crunchyroll brings more episodes of anime to US audiences than any other company,” said Kun Gao, CEO of Crunchyroll. “Licensors are leveraging our platform to not only market and promote their brands, but to create an online business. We've figured out how to build audiences and monetize professional content online and welcome the opportunity to work with any content partners, to help grow their internet businesses, in this period of great industry transition.”
