« on: May 17, 2010, 07:58:42 PM »
was thinking of playing pc games but not the kind off you would find on xbox... something classic like done by blizzard or bullfrog (i still hate molyneux for selling bullfrog and starting bullshit instead! >:() maybe some strategy/management game like majesty (did the sequel ever come out? you think it would run on a scrappy pc?) sooooooo suggestions?

First off, make sure you get D-Fend Reloaded. It's DOSBox plus a slick front-end. Everyone should have this if they want to play old games.

Now, here's some suggestions:

-Alone in the Dark 1 and 2 - Classic RE-style survival horror from France
-Albion - Scifi RPG from Germany
-B.A.T. 2: Koshan Conspiracy - Comic-book styled adventure game
-Betrayal at Krondor - open-world RPG
-BloodNet - Cyberpunk adventure/RPG with vampires
-Colonization - American Revolution-based Civ game [recently remade]
-Dark Seed - HR Giger adventure game
-Dark Sun 2: Wake of the Ravager - D&D RPG
-Death Rally - Top-down racing game with weapons and upgrades
-Master of Magic - Fantasy Civ game, focused more on attacking than diplomacy
-Normality - First-person adventure game, really good
-Relentless 2: Twinsen's Adventure - Isometric action/adventure
-Settlers 2: Gold - City sim with competition against other cities
-Ringworld: Revenge of the Patriarch - Scifi adventure game
-Rise of the Dragon - Cyberpunk adventure game
-Strife - RPG/FPS with an open world
-System Shock - RPG/FPS with a horror bent
-Universe - Scifi adventure game
-Quest for Glory series - RPG/Adventure from Sierra
-One Must Fall 2097 - 2D fighter with upgradeable giant robots

Majesty sequel came out, it's not that different gameplay wise. It was a great game.

One Must Fall was an awesome game back in the day.

Gabriel Knight 1-3

Best adventure games ever. All three are awesome, but 2 was probably the best, it had sweet FMV, werewolves, Wagner, and gay subtext.  :drool

Here it is on GoG: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/evil_genius $10 is well worth it. I think you'll get fed up at some point, there are some strange resource bottlenecks and weird gameplay quirks, but you'll love it in the meanwhile.

Well, considering that most of these games aren't available anywhere except Amazon, and for exorbitant prices, that pretty much goes without saying.

GOG is awesome. Lots of bonus content, low prices on most stuff, and every game runs as smoother as butter.

Outcast!

Voxels!
Yes.  Outcast was an incredible game!  Absolutely loved it.

Downside?  It is limited to a maximum resolution of 512x384 as a result of the voxel engine.  I believe there is a way to go beyond that, but it requires some serious tinkering.

I heard the version on GOG plays fine on modern PCs and I should jump on that eventually.  That and SS2 are games I've been meaning to replay for a while but both had troubles since upgrading to Vista (and now 7).

Ultima 6, 7, 8 - the best RPG series there is, period. Isometric, real-time combat.

Borys  :bow2

Keen to check out some of the other games you've posted as well. I've just started replaying Ultima VII using Exult (a modification of Dosbox so it runs better as Ultima always did weird shit with memory management etc). Ultima VII still holds up really well, the fighting system is automatic so basically you're managing stats and upgrading your team of warriors  :punch Ultima VIII is still my favourite though, got it running in Pentagram but it's still a little bit buggy.

Does anyone remember that educational game The Crystal Rainforest? Really wanted to play that recently but it still costs ~$100 and can only be bought by schools with no torrents anywhere to be found. Was an epic game though.

Ultima is arguably the greatest RPG series ever.

All the 2D games from 6 onwards is still playable today.

The spin-off Underworld games were fantastic as well.  They probably were the best 1st person dungeon crawlers ever made although the really primitive 3d graphics make them almost unplayable today.  I wish someone would remake Ultima Underworld because everything else was so ahead of its time and would still work today.

What's the best way to play the Ultima games today? Buying the Ultima collection and then tinkering with Exult/DOSBOX/whatever? How is the compatibility with Win7?

Exult is made for Ultima 7 only (no other games use its engine AFAIK) but there is no tinkering necessary to play U7 in Exult. Likewise Pentagram is a project dedicated to emulating Ultima 8.
