Help me interpret this please
« on: May 27, 2010, 09:36:04 AM »
Last year a recruiting firm tried to place me at a company, which almost came to a deal.
They changed their mind at the last minute, choosing somebody older.

After that, the recruiter successfully placed me at another company.

Today, somebody from the recruiting firm mailed me, asking me how my current job is and telling me that they're looking for someone to fill the same spot at the first company again (the person they placed probably left?). She mentions the fact that they almost hired me last year and then asks if I know anybody in my network that would be interested in this job.

I immediately assumed they want to place me there, but are beating around the bush because they can't go around and lure people away from their clients (my current employer is also one of their clients).

Then it occured to me that I would look like a fool if that wouldn't be the case, so now I'm asking you the confirm my suspicions, or enlighten me about the ways of recruiters and tell me that she really just wants to use my network.

Basically I'm bad at straight subtext, please help me out here.

Call them up and ask.

They could certainly want to see if you were interested, but they could also simply want to know if you have any connections. Their job is twofold: to keep you happy and to keep their clients (who you work for) happy. Pulling you out of one job and placing you in another might not keep one of their clients happy. But if you're not happy where you are, then they might consider that getting you happy is going to keep their clients happier in the long run.

So yeah... call them up and ask. Especially if you think you might be happier elsewhere.
