This is my problem as well...now that the semester is over, I've been splitting my time with work, podcast and reading catch up, hockey, and some video games

Okay, after listening to Doug's review of Alan Wake:

YES. YES YES YES.

Deadly Premonition is a MUCH better game than Alan Wake. At least I'm interested in the story. There is definitely nothing original about Alan Wake's story at all, and once I heard him quote Stephen King, I knew I was in trouble.

Alan Wake is definitely a competent shooter and a gorgeous looking game, but considering how awesome the Bright Falls prequel episodes were (sparse with description and full of creepy imagery) I was completely let down by the game in that aspect.

I still intend to beat it, but only because of the easy cheevos.

Disappointed with the Alan Wake discussion. It was just a lot of ranting about the story -- which seems odd considering that every other game Doug likes has an utterly shitty story/narrative and he just disregards it rather than trolling fanboys about it. I don't expect to have the game explained in detail, but I came away knowing little more than I did before listening. Is it open world? Linear levels? Semi-linear with an overworld? What is the combat like? What are the enemies like, what do they do? In videos they just seem like RE4's ganados all over again but I imagine there is more to it. Maybe it's my fault for not following the game other than watching a few trailers here and there. That "Magic Light In the Sky" thing that tells you what to do seemed pretty god-damned stupid, so I'm at least kinda curious how that panned out.

For the record though, I gotta say I think Remedy was pretty self-aware with Max Payne and its sequel. All the weird cutscenes and those TV shows that played on the in-game monitors had some weird meta-elements. It's one of those things I feel like I could prove if I took the time to go replay them, but the gameplay at this point has gotta be mega-dated and I hardly have the time. It's not an out-and-out satire, but IIRC it's more like Bayonetta where they're lovingly aware of tropes and stylistic choices at the same time as they abuse and exploit them.

He did say "it's a shooter" like several times.

Think Max Payne without bullet time and a pretty poor attempt to scare you by narrating and taking the mystery out of everything. There ya go.

I understand that it's a shooter, but considering that the genre runs the gamut from Call of Duty to Halo to Half Life to RE5 to Lost Planet that doesn't tell me too much.

I guess I'm mostly interested in the enemy tactics, gunplay, mechanics, and level design. Plus I'd like to know how much Remedy have evolved since Max Payne. Or de-volved, considering that on the surface it looks like there's less for you to do in combat -- no bullet time, no shootdodge, more narrow weapon selection. It looks like every encounter involves shining a light on some asshole then blasting him to bits, but there's got to be more right?

Blockbuster only has 1 copy of Alan Wake, so my chances of giving it a spin anytime soon seem pretty low.......but hey, I'm checking in there every couple days for a copy of Red Dead Redemption; if it pops up I'll probably grab it.

Yeah listening to it the first time, it wasn't what I expected. I always imagined him sounded like a more snarky version of Roger Klotz for some reason.

It's third person, but it controls better than a lot of the other recent third person shooter type games in the genre (Gears, RE 5). If you are looking for a survival horror game though (like it's supposed to be) it's a pass. Maybe a rental.

I already sold it, didn't even beat it. Then again I could always just rent it and beat the rest. It's only like six hours.

So it's just a linear series of levels like Gears? The early trailers at least seemed to imply that there would be a big town to explore. Is there anything interesting about the enemies, or is it just gunning down loads of melee-based foes like RE4/5?

Me too, but three out of six episodes in I wasn't able to explore. Although the game makes it a point to show you the whole city at the beginning.

there isn't much to discuss, mechanically; and unlike a jrpg, the story saturates every moment of the game through its narrative exposition and investigatory components. gameplay-wise, you shine a light on enemies and shoot them when the shadow gets stripped away, and you manage battery power and ammunition. the levels are extremely linear and there is very little in the way of exploration. sorry you were disappointed, but the discussion is a direct reflection of the game's emphasis on narrative and dialogue uber alles.
