Google vs Microsoft: It's On!

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is done washing its Windows, according to a Financial Times article. Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows is no longer an acceptable working environment for new Googlers or upgraded workstations, with the company instead favoring Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) Mac OS X and various flavors of Linux.

This is hardly a shocker, given that Google and Microsoft are head-to-head competitors in an increasing number of areas. Google's infrastructure has a storied past of Linux dominance, and Big G has its own Linux-based operating system working its way toward commercial introduction later this year. The policy change has reportedly been in the works for a long time, but the Chinese hacking scare in January was the final straw, as some Google employees cite "security concerns" as the triggering factor.

Mounting evidence suggests Microsoft could be shutting down tomorrow, maybe sooner?

That would be awesome if our government subsidized iPads, and offered credits for people to turn in their desktops for Apple products. Then we would turn around and sell all the used PC desktops to third world countries.

This is probably a bad move.  Surely there are some actual job-related things that Windows is better at than OSX and linux?

It makes it seem like a really late reaction to the public and it's not like you're going to dent MS' profits with your 20k employees using another OS on their work computers.

Methy, Google is a fraction of the size of MS.  They're only doing this as a point of company pride or some bullshit, since most of us plebes couldn't give a shit what OS Google uses and MS certainly won't whine about the lost profits.
