Yeah, but I think the optional missions are the main game since they are the bulk of it.  There's ~200 missions total in the game and it takes ~50-70 hours to clear them all.  The main story is just a small bonus.  There's some crazy missions post-game.

Only played this a bit and I'm still really liking it like I did the demo.

I don't know if it sounds like criticism, but I don't feel like I can bother to S-rank everything and be perfect stealth like I try to in other MGS games.  Because it has a lot of PSP quirks like funky controls, tech limitations, frequent and long load times, etc.  I never feel totally comfortable playing this game.  Last thing I did was the shooting range and normally I'm OCD about that, but I just can't aim precisely and quickly using the face buttons...I just can't.  Even basic camera controls are a bit of a hassle and I don't feel like I have a full understanding of the level layout and the enemies in it.  I mean, if this was on the PS2 or PS3/360 with dual analog controls, less choppy, etc I would have probably been more into it.  The reason I'm not playing it right now is because I don't like playing handheld games for long stretches.  At least the structure supports the way I play these types of games.

but quick question on main missions vs side stuff.  can I just go through the main missions without bothering with the side stuff and revisit all that later on?

I'm actually the other way.  I've never gotten a perfect MGS1-4 run before with no alerts (maybe I've done no kills, don't remember).  The problem is the games are long and if you aren't saving frequently (I pretty much never save in MGS1-4 since you can't really lose progress) one mistake can screw you up hours in.  No way I can deal with that kind of strictness.

Otoh, because the Peace Walker missions can be like...60 seconds and 1 room, it gives me a much bigger incentive to get 0 alert, 0 kill, and fast clear time for an S ranking.  I think I S-ranked about 90% of the non-boss fights.  In Boss fights I murdered everyone like I'm playing GTA because I want to get that commander out of his seat.  I usually get negative points on bosses with human squads  :lol

Getting top ranks in MGS isn't fun anyways because it requires stupid amounts of memorization and patience.  I can only imagine it being even worse in Peace Walker since it's a PSP game.  My hands cramp up whenever I play the PSP for more than an hour.

Yes.  Just shoot him with zzz weapons instead of real ones.

Well, like I was saying, a lot of the missions are <5 mins and you get ranked on a per mission basis.  So it's very doable.  You just look around at the enemies and the area and be stealth and quick.

The post-game feels like a grind if you try to marathon it.  Just play a little bit here and there and it's a lot of fun.  Have you tried the ghost hunts yet?  Those are hard.  How about Pooyan?

As for the story, kojima is trolling you and mgs fans expecting something to actually happen.  That's the entire plot of the game.  Like I said when I finished the import, the story is lolz; don't expect much.  It's a pure gameplay-game with lots of optional codecs.

yeah the radars are all horrible, all of them shows enemy so close to you that chance are you already have seen the soldier for yourself or got spotted, the first one don't even show the enemy before you upgrade it and the second one as i said last for like 5 seconds before turning itself off

No way,  Sonic Eye is awesome once you get a good battery in it.  That was my main radar for most of the game until I got NIGHT VISION GOGGLES.  The I just used NVG so I could immediately see human shapes in an area.

You get the ghost hunts as you clear stuff.  Missions unlock when you clear other missions.

I should invest in NVGs then.  I was thinking it was worthless since there hasn't been a dark place yet.

and about outer ops, can I just complete a tank boss like a dozen times to get a dozen tanks? how does it balance it out? why would I send soldiers if I could send eight tanks to take out 2 infantry soldiers?

NVG are so good it's like cheating.  It's funny because Peace Walker is probably the 5th or 6th game I've played where I use NVG even during the day just makes it easier to see things (and sometimes improves framerates).  I did that for a few of the Splinter Cells and for CoD4 in recent memory.

And yeah, for tanks you can do that. But as you get further, they become less effective.  I got about 75% through Outer Ops, but now every mission is SS and I'm too lazy to stock up on really good tanks/heli because even when I do I'll lose at least 1 per battle.

do the NVGs get better with upgrades? I like the sound thing better that shows you enemies through walls

and how do you get a driver to come out of the vehicle? I thought you had to take out every normal guy, then he comes out.  But this new optional mission seems like it has infinite respawning enemies.  I'm tempted to just destroy the thing.

They just get longer batteries. I dunno I find using both together really helpful because the eye doesn't catch non-moving enemies. On sneaking missions I actually take nvg, sonic eye, soliton into every mission and use them all. When battery dies on one I switch to another.

For tanks/helis they stop spawning but it can take forever on some. Take them all out, then damage it a bit and he'll come out. in multi the spawn count goes up. Duckroll said he fought a 4p heli and there were 88 guys before the leader came out.

Sometimes I just say screw it and blow it up

my compromise is just killing every soldier that appears

and I see the appeal of NVGs now.  One level had hidden enemies and the sonic eye didn't pick any of them up.  It was cool that all those guys were great in intel gathering.  Kinda made sense since they were a bunch of sniper/spy guys.

there are four dots or other shapes around the center; just line it up and press the trigger.  most games don't do the dot in the center of the screen.  I just wish the reticule stood out a bit more because sometimes it blends in too much with the surroundings.

Some games do.  When I think of more popular ones like Halo, Call of Duty, or even MGS4, they all just surround the center of the screen.  I know GTA4 and RDR use a dot, and Half Life 2 did.  It's just something you get used to.

I haven't played anything past the demo, but the stealth is solid although the controls take time getting used to...

It amazes me they just didn't make it like MGS1-3 with an top down camera and keep most of the game indoors. This would fix 95% of the game's control issues. I miss indoors MGS.

Which work fine for classic MGS on a real controller.

In this game with PSP interface, shooter controls are the only way to go.

I agree that it's weird they haven't made a traditional MGS1/MGS2 style game on the PSP, but a free camera works so much better for the type of game Peace Walker is.  It worked great in MGS3 Subsistence too.  The biggest problem is still that the PSP doesn't have a second analog stick.

So, my fellow Portable Ops haters, how is Peace Walker? I'll probably pick it up after work today if you like it.

It's a much better game.  I thought Portable Ops was just a pain.  Even if it had good controls, which it didn't, having to drag enemies back to the truck or place your other soldiers around the map to make it easier was boring.  Peace Walker still has building an army, but it isn't a hassle or interrupt the regular gameplay.  Controls are also much better.  They aren't perfect, but that's more a fault of the PSP.

To get the head parts (and other parts), don't destroy stuff.  Just hit the AI container.  If you damage the other parts you won't get them but it will unlock AI panels instead.

The head parts are cumulative.  Like you have to get 5-10 to get +1.  It's the hardest part to get and it requires a bit of grinding the bosses until you get all 5.  Then you have an awesome Metal Gear and destroy stuff in outer ops and then someone blows it's head off in battle and you  :'(

Really?  Most of the bosses stand still at certain times.  Then you just aim at the AI pod and it shouldn't hurt anything else.

The only exception is Chrysalis because it's a moving bitch (the teleport move right when your rocket is about to hit the AI pod is BS!).  I just use the FIM and don't care.

Got this off PSN last  night. God, PSN is so slow.  It took me 3 hours to download.  It was only 1084 megs and my connection is 15 mbs down.  Argh!

This is much, much more polished than Portable Ops, which I could not stand.  I love that the VA is back with the codec calls and even the controls are much improved.  MGS fans should not miss this one.

6 to 10 minutes to get another helicopter, send EVERYTHING (three tanks, two apcs, three helicopters) into a mission against 4 foot soldiers and a buggy.  Play long mission, come back, see "lol both of the attack helicopters are gone".

Yep.  I say don't go out of your way to get vehicles.  You'll get a ton if you do the optional missions and then when you have 7 fully healed ones and your Metal Gear send them in and hope you don't lose any.  Also don't be afraid to throw in soldiers.  They are very expendable and at times good enough!

Yeah, that's about when I gave up on the game.  I cleared all the non-boss optional missions available and cleared all the boss ones that are 4 stars and below but the 5 star and red star ones....there's like 20-30 of them and I don't have any interest in doing all those solo.  Maybe it'd be a little more interesting if it wasn't just TANK/HELI/LAV/TANK/HELI/LAV x 50 battles or something.  I think they went a bit crazy on the optional boss spam.

The main thing I don't like about this game are the boss battles in that they all kinda suck.  It's a shame considering how good MGS bosses have been in the past, both the battle and concept.  And constant staggering.  What is wrong with Japan? every game they make has ridiculous staggering animations.  When the game combos a stagger into knocked about psyche gauge into constant barrage attacks and getting buttfucked on the ground while my rations constantly drop is FUCK YOU GAME YOU FUCKING CUNT.  Oh, and fuck off with wiggling the analog nub.  I feel like it's going to break off and it has already broken a little because of that shit.

Really?

I thought the main bosses (AI bosses) were up there with the Metal Gear fights in MGS1-4.  But this time you got like 4-5 of them!  The first time you fight Pupa it's like WTFISGOINGON and then when you figure it out it's like OMGTHISISCOOL.  The final boss is absolutely retardedly dragged out, but otherwise it's pretty badass.

The LAV/Tank/Heli are alright battles until the higher stars when they get waaaaay too much armor and too strong and are annoying.

When I fought Pupa it was like "ok, I shoot rockets at it"
When I fought the next boss it was like "ok, I shoot rockets at it"
When I fought the boss after that it was like "ok, I shoot rockets at it"

There aren't any cool bosses where you fight another dude.  No cool fist fights.  No fights against enemies with special talents.  It's all really boring and probably designed in a way that would work with 4 people going monster hunter on it.  As the battles get harder, all that really changes is their life.  It then becomes about calling in supplies every once in a while as you wear down their life bar.  It's just boring.  They also move around move and that gets annoying too.

I've been trying to play this but it's hard to get used to the controls.  Makes me wish for a home release, even if it's for the WII.

Also, while I was playing this, I was just thinking how weird it is that MGS fans love MGS3 even though it's mostly the reason why MGS4 sucked.  The whole retconning of Big Boss into a good guy made the whole MGS universe a mess.  As George Lucas has shown so brilliantly, prequels are almost always bad ideas.

Take the game as-is, give it a slight visual boost (just upping the resolution would be enough, really), add in controls for the Dual Shock 3, and make this a PSN game with 4P online play.

I got the groove down of hiding from the chopper than running under it when the backup arrives but i keep getting caught on the 3rd or 4th set of dudes and die.

i've died around 6 times

Just shoot the backup with a rocket launcher while they are dropping to the fight zone, after all the backup is dead the captain will come out and you can kill him with a direct hit of a rocket.

Yes, but I have to be ridiculously patient (spoiler about sniping)

The first loud  shot always triggers a "warning" phase, causing the AI to be more alert.    I can only take one or two shots before I have to take cover to wait it out.

Having a few toys unlocked later on helps quite a bit in sniping.  So long as you're fairly far away and your camo index isn't negative you should be okay.

"spoilers about sniping" :rofl, that dude keeps spoiling "sniper" and "sniping" on his other posts too, that shit is getting ridiculous over there.
