Summer RPG playthrough
« on: June 04, 2010, 02:09:02 PM »
I wanted to know if any of you guys are interested in doing a collective RPG playthrough, similar to the "GAF Plays" threads on NeoGAF.  I thought this would be a good time since summer is more conducive to actually finishing a RPG. I'm game to any, western, JRPGs, SRPGs.

These are some of the most recent ones that I haven't played or finished.

Multi:
Star Ocean 4
The Last Remnant
Dragon Age
ME 1/2
Fallout 3

PS3:
Demon's Souls
Valkyria Chronicles

360:
ME 1/2
Lost Odyssey

DS:
Strange Journey

PSP
I can't think of any right now.

Wii:
Ditto

I'm open to any recommendations.

I'm gonna play Persona 3 Portable whenever it comes out.  Otherwise, I'm pretty caught up on RPGs I'd like to play...

I'm in the middle of Chapter 3 of The Witcher, so I am making some progress on my RPG backlog.  :-\

I'm going to play through Resonance of Fate, Star Ocean 4 (about half-way through it right now) and Ryu Ga Gotoku 4 over the summer, if anyone is interested.

I can do Blue Dragon, Last Remnant and Strange Journey since I started them and never finished. I should also be getting Resonance of Fate from gamefly soon.

How's SO4, distant? I have it right here, still sealed. Thinking about trading it for now.

Trade it in and pick it up when it's cheap.

I can do a handful of those games. I'm like 5 hours into Blue Dragon.

Currently playing Resonance of Fate and Bowser's Inside Story, pretty far into both. I absolutely LOVE Resonance, Bowser's Inside Story is OK, but combat drags on faaaar too much and the game gets a bit too minigamey/gimmicky at points.

some RPGs I'm planning on playing through the remainder of this year:

-Muramasa: The Demon Blade
-DQ Swords (not really an RPG)
-Rudra's Treasure
-Ys IV: Mask of the Sun
-Fable 2
-3D Dot Game Heroes
-The Witcher
-Digital Devil Saga 2
-Radiata Stories
-Growlanser 2 and 3
-Fallout 1 and 2
-Vagrant Story
-Wild Arms 4
-Planescape Torment
-Persona 3 FES

And of course I will be dropping everything for DQ9 when that comes out.

tiesto, you should check out Alpha Protocol.  Knowing your taste in jrpgs and wrpgs I think you'd like it.

I'd do one sure. I finished most of the 360 games and the only console I would even remotely consider playing is DS. Nobody plays Wii or PC games... get real

Actually I was just looking over the GAF |OT| (tm) for the game, was surprised to see many big names from the Japanese side of things post in there (duckroll, Aeana, you, Cep, Llyranor or whatever his name is)... not a big fan of stealth, awkward combat systems, or really unpolished games, so that has me a bit worried.

But, it's SEGA... and I tend to absolutely love the RPGs they publish.

Tiesto, are you gonna play the PS2 version of P3FES?  Or are you just gonna wait for the PSP game?

The Witcher is awesome, but oh man it has that 'janky Euro RPG' feel to it.  As an example
spoiler (click to show/hide)
some elves and dwarves were trying to rob a bank, and I told the human sidekick that I would negotiate.  He got pissed at me and left, but the elves and dwarves attacked me anyway then the human came back and told me I did a great job.  ???

Does that apply to the PC version?

As for RPGs I'd like to finish in the immediate future, I've got:

Nier
Magna Carta 2
Disgaea 3
Spectral Force 3
Devil Summoner 2

I'm almost done with Resonance of Fate, and then from there I'm going to start up Nier. I've been meaning to replay Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, and Tales of Vesperia for ages too.

I finished Dragon Age yesterday and I restarted it as an evil city elf rogue.  It's awesome talking about how much I hate humans.  Alistair (a fellow grey warden) keeps reprimanding me for randomly killing people. :lol

I came across an awesome quest in The Witcher that shows how awesome its moral system is.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
A knight's sister was missing and I was investigating her whereabouts.  Come to find out, she joined a brothel.  The brothel is actually ran by vampires, who witchers are supposed to destroy.  The knight thinks she was brainwashed, but his sister and the vampire leader say that she came out of her own choice.  I end up killing the knight because he is pissed that I sided with the vampires.  I also got some vampire sex out of it!

I love that there was no clear 'good' or 'bad' response to that quest.

rpgs are how I relax at night when I'm done with work :)
I'd say full time law school takes up about 40-50 hours a week and I get in about 20-30 hours of gaming a week on top of that.

Right now I have these in my backlog:

Nier
Demon's Souls
FFXIII

I will probably never finish FFXIII, I think 20 hours of that was enough.

Might buy Dragon Age at some point, always been interested and need a WRPG to get away from the JRPGs.

I have way too many games in my backlog though, fuck my irrational buying habits.
