Skies of Arcadia: Still the Mothafuckin' Bomb Diggity
« on: December 21, 2006, 02:47:13 PM »
I'm replaying Skies of Arcadia Legends on the 'pube, and FUCK ME LOOSE AN' JUICY if this still ain't one of the best RPGs ever assembled. The pacing and plot delivery are superb, the low-poly art direction still works, the dungeons are still insanely good, and all the sidequesting shit is so wonderfully coupled to the game proper that I actually ENJOY dorkin' around (as opposed to Twilight Princess).

It has its faults, enumerated so as to shut the haters up in advance: battle animations are a little too lengthy, blah blah animu, ship battles are OMG slow, and Vyse has terrible fashion sense.

I think the combat system is actually damn good -- it's certainly a sore sight better than the fighteratin' in shit like the Xenosaga titles, and it's more strategic than, say Dragon Quest 8. For depth, it's roughly on par with FFX -- elemental matchups mean everything, and knowing when to focus and/or defend instead of attack is key.

(also, I like the ship battles -- they're slow and utterly lacking in real challenge, but it really adds something to the game as a whole, thematically, to duke it out with airships from time to time.)

The whole game is just so fucking CHARMING, and that means a lot from a chronic hater like me -- especially a chronic hater so weary of anime and JRPG convention. Vyse has no personal failings and he has a good attitude even starting out; Aika is chipper but also knows when to take shit seriously; and Fina is a brickhouse. (Fuck, you seen the thighs on that white girl? Damn!) There's no goofy romantic subplot penned by an otaku vet what's never romanced in his life, and the villains run the gamut from kooky to legitimately menacing. Plus the whole Silver Moon sequence -- fuck yeah. The whole experience has this sort of threatening-yet-heartwarming Miyazaki vibe to it that no other RPG has adequately captured, in my jaded ol' opinion.

ANYWAY: appreciate, fegs!

I would replay it if it was 480p.

I didn't like how I couldn't go back and do sidequests after a certain point cause I saved and had no idea I couldn't go back.

I like how you hang out with your mom and dad and like, s'all cool. They're just these guys, you know? I also like the way they DON'T die midway through the game in a hamfisted attempt at pathos and character development.

So many great environments in that game, and yes, it is just utterly charming.

I might give the GC version a try in Japanese, so I can at least partially justify it as language practice.

P.S. Aika > Fina

Yeah, I like that Vyse has both his parents and actually has a normal relationship with him -- i.e. no spectres of the past or what-have-you.

Also, shout out to The Man: Gilder! That spectacle-sportin' honkey got game.

"In dire need, we call on, the power, of the ancients"

THIS is how you're suppose to have character depth, and development while having a charming story.  When people say Zelda:TP has memorable characters, I fucking laugh...THIS game OOZES with charm, love it.  and I fucking HATE JRPGs.

The GameCube build sucks because the game was made for a single Mini-DVD of 1.5 gbs instead of two 1.2 gbs GD-ROMs for the Dreamcast build. So all the music has been downsampled. And, coupled with the corny high-pitched MIDI music, it's all UNLISTENABLE in certain conditions.

I played hundreds of fucking games since a year and it was the sole one of them I ever stopped playing because of irritating music.

QFT on the first post, except for the part about long battle animations. You can skip them with Start.

The Spirit bar instantly makes the combat system more awesome than 90% of JRPGs, I have no idea why people trash it. Everyone bitches about the encounter rate too, even though you can reduce it with those scrolls. I never had a problem with it, though.

Such an awesome game, I wish I had time to replay it again.

I honestly don't think it needs a sequel, it ended so perfectly.  If anyting in another 5-10 years release it again with revamped graphics...

I also like the fact that Vyse TALKED, usually RPG mains don't talk, but it really added a lot to his character.
