have they talked about any other modes? the first game was around that same length but after you finished it unlocked free ride extreme.  With all the things about car customization and whatnot, I'd expect there to be more.

I'm completely fine with no multi. I'm actually glad. Gives them more focus on the single player. Already played one great open world title this year with RDR. I'm really hoping this is the second.

I don't know...they seem to be heavy focused on story, not many details are known

Also, not sure if people here know, but demo will be released 2-3 weeks before launch.

I don't see where you could fit multiplayer in Mafia. I'm happy with it being single player only.

yeah, no multi is fine with me, and an estimate of 15 hours usually means I'll be playing it for 20, so as long as the storyline is tolerable and the controls aren't jackfucked all to hell i'm on board

First review,from PC Zone

Quote
The mag gives the Mafia title 80% in its new October (yes, bloody October) issue - which is with subscribers now.

The game's major drawback, says Zone, is that it's an 'extremely linear driver and shooter'.

However, if you can get over that rather restrictive fact, there's plenty to enjoy for those nostalgic for the Cosa Nostra's days of US dominance.

The mag says that the dialogue is 'fine, and extremely well acted', adding that driving, 'as you'd expect from the former Illusion Software [2K Czech], is great'.

It continues: 'The collection of cars is great too - all timely models that damage so gently that you'll try to take care of them.'

All aspects of the game are covered in Zone's spectacular seven-page review - with more praise coming for the game's weapons and action sequences, despite a slightly 'cold' storyline.

It adds: 'Mafia II is 10 hours of driving, story and extremely competent gun action. Running at top specs, it looks stunning, and if there was a soundtrack album, I'd buy myself a copy.'

Sounds decent.

Some gaf nerd played it

Quote
I got to play the Mafia 2 PS3 Demo a few days ago at a 'premiere' type event and came away underwhelmed. Graphically the game seemed to have no anti-aliasing whatsoever so it was jaggy central; now I loved inFamous despite it also having no AA, but the stylised comic book world vs real world really makes a difference there in terms of the jaggies. The other major compaint is the shooting controls, they felt very clunky and more in line with what was the norm on the PS2 rather than the PS3. After games like Uncharted 2 and RDR they felt backward. I'm not a regular at these premiere type things so maybe these were down to some TV setup issues (maybe gaming mode wasn't enabled on the TV and the sharpness may have been maxed out or something) but when the demo is publicly released in a fortnight I really hope that it looks and controls a lot better on a properly setup TV...

Some unusual gameplay choices too. You can't swim at all, and by that I don't mean you drown: instead there's actually an invisible barrier that stops you from going into the water. And if you drive a car into the water the screen goes black, and then you suddenly respawn at the water's edge minus car. Also if you roll a convertible you die instantly :(

Textures were a mixed bag, the grass texture used on the lawns looks awful, but some of the texturing at the waters edge was brilliant. Animation was pretty good too, I did like the way you kind of feel your way with the back of your free hand when shuffling along in cover. I only got to use the MG42, M1911 and shotgun in the demo (although there is a Thompson in there as well) but they all felt pretty good. I played without any sound so can't comment on sound effects or voice acting. You do have the ability to change clothes at your house too, I don't think I saw that shown or mentioned yet. Car damage was fairly simple in comparison to the GTA games; maybe it's due to the cars being used, but external damage is mostly cosmetic with not much model deformation other than flying bonnets/hoods. When the engine starts smoking and eventually dies you have an on-the-fly repair button press option although I never got a chance to use it.

OXM review is out...not particularly good or bad score(7/10)

pros-
detailed world
nice and varied
excellent sound track

cons-
disappointing action
boring characters

Some quotes

"which isn't to say the script is completely terrible, it will hold your attention - it just won't give anything back. its exactly the same with the driving and shooting. for all the hundreds of man hours that have gone into making Empire city, mafia's 2 missions feel a little drab. You're not quite driving the cars as much as dragging them through the city...and while the 3rd person based cover based shooting is perfectly satisfying, 95 percent of enemies will spawn run to a certain piece of cover and stay in the same position just popping up and down forever like a target at a funfair."

''nobody in mafia2, not vito, nor his friends, nor the rest of the extended cosa nostra, is somebody you'd want to spend any amount of time with. good mafia movies (not to mention the mafia game that spawned this one) understand the importance of making their mafiosos entertaining and fundamentally warm people"

I'll play it since August is kind of dead. I liked the storytelling in the first mafia game but mechanically it was just average. Seems like they struggled with that aspect in the sequel. Although honestly I find nearly all open world games to have relatively crude control mechanics.

I don't think it's fair to judge the mechanics of this new game using the original as a basis.  When the original Mafia was released, it's mechanics were actually quite good.  It played much better than games like Grand Theft Auto 3, which were popular at the time, and came close to matching dedicated PC shooters.  It has been quite a while since the game hit shelves, however.  Media of the second game demonstrates that the sequel incorporates most of the modern day shooter mechanics.

This is perhaps the most disappointed aspect of the review for me.  They really nailed this in the original game.

Played it. It's about a 15-20 minute demo.

I liked the story like in the first one. Seems like good quality voice acting and cutscenes which is actually important for me in open world games. I also like the playboy centerfold collectibles. Perfect collectible that actually serves a point (titillation) rather than useless shit like a coffee thermos. Its amazing how many games in this day and age still get that wrong.

The controls are decent. Driving feels slow at least in the vehicles presented in to the demo but I suppose its era appropriate. (On second thought maybe its the acceleration that is just slow) The gun controls are standard. They aren't great but they are functional and get the job done. Feels like a poor man's gears but competent. You take damage quickly. It doesn't take a lot to kill you.

The frame rate is highly variable. Worse than something like RDR. Lots of screen tearing. The aliasing is some of the worst I've seen in a long time on a console game. The medium and far distance often turns into a digital mush. Looking into the mirror in your apartment was hilarious because of this. It was like a fun house mirror.

Seems enjoyable. I'm eager to play it (mainly for the story) despite the technical shortcomings on the console versions.

I thought the demo was really good.  I will agree that the cover system isn't very good.  You can't even pull back on the analog stick to detach, but at least you can go around corners by pressing X.  The reticule being towards the top of the screen is annoying for me since most games have it at the center or bottom (like Halo); I feel like I'm not seeing enough because of it. Though, The act of shooting guns feels great.  The shotgun blowing off bits of wall while also taking down a guy in one shot.  I thought driving felt great on both normal and simulation.  Actually, the punching combat is really good; I'm surprised considering how little you get into fist fights in these games.

My problem with the shooting is more that it just feels like other games.  They got rid of a lot of the more 'realistic' parts from the first game.  Things like reloading makes you lose the rest of your clip, only being able to carry one large weapon, and enemies that also have a finite amount of ammo (this might still be in the game and I haven't noticed it).  I don't think others would agree.

oh, and the wanted system is so good.  First, you can just bribe cops for small crimes if you have the money, so you don't get into a big scuffle because of a minor incident.  The way it seems to work is based on cops seeing you, and that fills up a bar.  It's not like a stupid giant circle that makes the entire area a danger zone.  At one point I just ran behind some houses and chilled out a while; after that they were still looking for me based on my clothing, which you could change at your house or another location.  If they were chasing you while you were in a car, they start looking for your car, so you can just get out and switch cars and they'll lose it.  It's awesome that it isn't just driving really fast to leave a circle.

I knew there was something bugging me about it and until you mentioned that I didn't realize that was it. I also had a hard time running through the environment and accidentally hitting A and sticking to cover in the environment when I was just trying to move about. Maybe there is an alternate config or something.

The wanted system sounds interesting. I don't really like the system in nearly all of the other open world games.

Instead of just changing cars, I noticed that you can take you car to the mechanic to get it painted or you can just change the license plate (they let you customize what it says).  You can also tune up your car and get better tires.  Another neat thing is that you can open the drunk and hood of your car, and I hope it is like the first Mafia where you can store weapons in your car too.

About the wanted system, I noticed that there is a level before them arresting you/taking a bribe where they just give you a warning.  If you get into a fist fight they just tell you to break it up.

Also, there is another playboy magazine in the southern clothing shop.

Actually I was mocking Triple A but then I don't have the same hard on against GTA 4 that you did. Technically its a bit of a mess on the consoles either way not that I overly care outside of the frame rate which is rather weak no matter which way you cut it. Sub hd resolutions I could give a shit about. Although normally when that compromise is made its made in the service of frame rate or anti-aliasing neither of which Mafia 2 seems to benefit much from on the console side.

I have a PC more than capable of playing all these games at hd resolutions. I know your puny brain can't comprehend this but not all of us give a shit about nerd shit like you do or agenda post constantly.

Good, so you know the advantages of an HD resolution.

I know you have very little constructive to add to any conversation actually involving a videogame so I'll ignore you for a bit until you actually make a post worth a damn.

Sure, you do that.

I mean you're not a graphics nerd so you don't care about resolution anyway so there's simply no discussion to be had.
