The Day & Night short before this was excellent.  I think I enjoyed that more than just about anything else I've seen so far this year.

Could you tell me what the quote was from the radio tower? I thought I saw Steven King in the credits.

I was just reading about this on Wikipedia:

Quote
The voice is that of Dr. Wayne Dyer, taken from a lecture he gave in New York in the 1970's. Pixar honored Dr. Dyer's work by providing him with a private screening of the film. The director of the film incorporated the ideas taken from Wayne Dyer's lecture in order to show that the unknown can be beautiful and mysterious but doesn't have to be something to fear.

Yeah because really that's all the movie is about, right? You know this and you haven't even seen it! :lol

Look I'll admit, I just looked back on my posts and I dunno what came over me, I was in a weird mood yesterday, but just because most of you are so desensitized and mature and world-weary that this "kiddie bullshit" doesn't do anything for you doesn't mean you have to ruin my enjoyment or anybody else's. I wonder what's more sad, a 19 year old kid crying during Toy Story 3, or grown adults making fun of that kid for doing so?

Actually, I'd rather TS3 be just about kiddie bullshit.  Toy Story was always for kids.  I'm getting a bit tired of Pixar injecting darker themes into all their recent films just so to show that cartoons can be for adults too.

Exactly. Anyone pretending this is a new thing for Pixar, or Disney for that matter (look at any of the classics like Snow White and Pinocchio; Dreamworks could never try to scare kids like that), is kidding themselves.

No, but it's not like they just woke up one day and decided that they wanted to make their movies darker than the others out there. Kids movies these days pander way too much anyway, so there's got to be some balance somewhere.

I haven't seen Toy Story 3 but I do plan to watch it with my baby brother.  I can't understand why an adult would cry though if the movie doesn't have any "serious" themes.  I mean, I guess Up did that in the beginning because it was talking about life and death and loneliness and all that gay crap but isn't Toy Story still just about toys and kids?

am nintendo Toy Story 2 and probably 3 talk about the same things.

Children's stories used to be cautionary tales. Don't do this, don't do that, be clever and cunning rather than stupid and brave. Now we get Dreamworks 'You can be anything bullshit' and Pixar's pandering to the 20-50 year olds who are scared of dying or being forgotten about.

It's more like I loved toys growing up as a kid and I loved that the imagination that I had in playing with them and looking back all of life's problems have kind of squandered it away. I miss being blissfully ignorant to the world around, but not to the point of trying to make that who I am now.

I don't understand how you can say Pixar appeals to 20-50 year old people, seeing as how Toy Story 3 is basically a love letter to the fans that grew up "with" Andy. And I did. With other Pixar films, sure it's different, but TS3 caters to a really specific crowd, I feel. Or maybe that's just me. Whatever. I can't say anything on this board without somebody picking it apart/making it sound stupid and subsequently making fun of it. I'm not sure why I try to defend myself here anymore.

Was good.  Some nice jokes, fun story.

I'm kind of getting over CG movies though.  I find the medium visually boring for the most part.  Really sad that Princess & The Frog bombed, it had so much more character in the animation than any of these CG films.

Isn't the movie about growing up and leaving childhood behind?  If so i suspect all the blubbering manchildren are just sad they couldn't grow up.

I suspect this too. I mean, sure, there is a lingering sadness for anyone that grew up watching these films. It basically hammers home that you are no longer a child, and it is time to leave childish things behind. If anything, it was produced for the kids that lined up to see the original in 1995, not for the youngsters that will see Toy Story for the first time on-screen this weekend.

If you're a normal, well-adjusted individual, the film has a rather uplifting message. If you're an immature manchild, I can imagine your brain will snap and force you into denial that your childhood is not actually over.

I think the saddest moment for me was one that didn't have anything to do with the toys at all.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
It was the scene where Andy's mom goes with him into his room and sees it all empty and without all the posters on the wall.

There were some other scenes in the movie that were sad, but none of them hit me as much as that one.

It's not really emo, though. It doesn't wallow in sadness, the toys aren't having a pity party, etc.

Don't hold the film accountable for Cheebs' lack of maturity.

It isn't. There's sentimentality in there for adults and there's one scene that's way too scary to make into a Dreamworks pop culture fest, but it's not emo.

After Up and what Pixar did here I really can't wait to see what Pete Doctor does with Monsters 2.

Over the last 15 years Pixar has been able to carefully judge just how far they can push things and TS3 really feels like a culmination of that experience, which bodes well for the future.

Brave is a huge mystery, everyone knows exactly what Cars 2 will be, and Monsters 2 should be awesome. Newt has fallen off the schedule and 2012 has no big release aside from Monsters. TS3 making a billion dollars will hopefully let Lasseter and Catmull greenlight the projects being worked on and avoid animator layoffs.
