Dropbox is so good - don't use USB sticks anymore
« on: June 19, 2010, 01:57:29 AM »
USB sticks are ancient.
https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTc4OTQ1OTU5 If you sign up through the referal link you and and I both get an extra 250mb. It's pretty good. I frequently switch between 3 computers and started using dropbox as my working folders (free accounts get 2gb space). It's also handy as backup with version history, especially for work. I have two accounts, one for work and one for private and share the working folders to my private account so I can easily work at home.

The Dropbox client enables users to drop any file into a designated folder that is then synced to the cloud and to any other of the user's computers and devices with the Dropbox client.[14] Users may also upload files manually through a web browser.[15] Through these usages, it can be an alternative to couriering physical removable media, and other traditional forms of file transfer, such as FTP and e-mail attachments.[16]
While Dropbox functions as a storage service, its focus is on synchronization and sharing. It supports revision history, so files deleted from the Dropbox folder may be recovered from any of the synced computers.[17][18] Dropbox's version control also helps users know the history of a file they may be currently working on, enabling more than one person to edit and re-post files without complications of losing its previous form.[19] The version history is limited to 30 days. A paid option for unlimited version history called "Pack-Rat" is available.[20]
The version history is paired with the use of delta encoding technology. To conserve bandwidth and time, if a file in a user's Dropbox folder is changed, Dropbox only uploads the pieces of the file that are changed when syncing.[21] Though the desktop client has no restriction on individual file size, files uploaded via the web site are limited to a maximum of 300 MB per file.[22] To prevent free users (who get 2 GB of free storage) from creating multiple free accounts, Dropbox includes the content of shared folders when totaling the amount of space used on the account.[23]

Yeah, it's pretty good. I've been using it for the past week and it's effortlessly. Has made my life easier, I just don't have to deal (e-mail, usb sticks, whatever) with getting the most up to date file. It just does its thing in the background. The version history has come in handy a few times too.

I installed this and my taskbar immediately disappeared. Now what the fuck do I do? Windows 7

Googling turns up this guy asking if the dude tried using a desktop extender: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/30958-my-taskbar-disappeared.html

But the guy havign the problem did not. Also his start button still exists and mine doesn't. I can't even right click the desktop to access properties or control panel.

Option 4 fixed it after killing dropbox, if anyone else has the problem.

I know, set and forget. It's so effortlessly. Never have to think about syncing work files.
