« on: June 21, 2010, 10:53:38 PM »
The PSP, the only remaining console to avoid the Wagglation of our once proud hobby. Buying one feels almost noble. :american

:bow PSP :bow2

:bow Buttons :bow2

I bought the Peace Walker Bundle with
- Crimson Gem Saga
- Persona
- Dissida: Final Fantasy
- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy
- Locoroco 2

Recommend other games I can push buttons to manipulate on-screen characters in.

Wipeout Pure, Pulse.
Little Big Planet (if you like LBP)
Metal Gear Ac!d 2 (first game was good for the time, but 2nd is better so skip the first)
Wild Arms XF (supposedly; I haven't played but Prole recommends I think)
Lumines (if you don't have the xbla/psn version)
Every Extend Extra
Megaman Powered Up
Silent Hill Origins (if you like Silent Hill)
Resistance Retribution (awesome game if you like TPS)
Syphon Filter Logan's shadow (apparently, haven't played)
Motorstorm Artic Edge (if you like racing)
Ghouls & Ghosts (the import Goku Makaimura is apparently better, but I never played that version)
Crush
Hot Shots Golf (if you like HSG)
Patapon is kind of alright.  Groo digs it
Dracula X (some people hate the remake, I enjoy both it and the original [both on disc])
If you want fighting game ports, Tekken/Guilty Gear/Blazblu/SFAlpha3 are all solid ports

If you're down to import (system is region free) and you like beatmania get a DJ Max Portable game

^PSP has a really lousy RPG lineup.   :-\  It's a shame because it's the genre that should have fared best on the PSP.

Yeah, I would generally agree with that.  Though I think if you let in ports and moon speak titles it's not bad and it's been getting better in the last year and has some nice upcoming stuff.

I played and liked KH BBS, Crisis Core, Valkyrie Profile, Tales of Eternia, Tales of Phantasia, Metal Gear Ac!d, Classic Dungeon, Zettai Hero, Jewel Summoner
I played and did not enjoy Persona, Devil Summoner, Jeanne D'Arc, Popolocrois I+II
I haven't played but want to at some point, Tengai Makyou IV, Star Ocean I, Princess Crown, Wild Arms XF, Brave Story
Upcoming is The Last Ranker, Tales of Phantasia X Narikiri Dungeon remake, Yakuza PSP, FFXIII Agito

PSP, from a technical standpoint, is perfect for RPGS.  It had a high-res screen and analog nub that work better for slower games, great storage capacity for FMV and high fidelity sound, etc.  I never understood why Sony never pushed RPG gaming harder on the PSP.  It's one of the few genres that aren't compromised much on a portable.

Thanks for the list.  I'll check out the games in your "liked" category.

What Tales game do you recommend most?  I can't remember which one I tried but I didn't like it.  I'm not fond of real-time combat systems that require little strategy.

Also, does Valkyrie Profile pick up the pace?  I found it OK but I sold it before I beat it, 'cause the game moved along too slowly.

Most of these have already been mentioned, but I have played and enjoyed (besides what you already have):

-Half Minute Hero
-Motorstorm: Arctic Edge
-Patapon
-Resistance Retribution
-Space Invaders Extreme (although I prefer the DS version)
-WipEout Pulse

The one good thing about PSP software doing nothing but bombing is how cheap the games get.

Oh yeah, forgot about Resistance.  Thought that game was done quite well, based on the first couple of levels that I played.  There's nothing wrong with it; it's just that when I play stuff like that, I usually wonder why I don't play a similar game on a console or PC instead and end up turning it off.

Yeah, shooters on the PSP always have the achilles' heel of subpar controls, but I thought Resistance was pretty good. If anyone were to want to get a shooter, I'd say it's probably the best one to get on the PSP, although I know Syphon Filter has its fans.

For portable Tales in english, if you're ok with a slightly dated one, Eternia is a good game.  Just an old PS1 game so the combat has advanced quite a bit since.  Also most of the English Tales releases are cut up with skits missing or not dubbed.  I'm not sure how Eternia fares (I think the Euro PSP release is just using the US PS1 release localization), but I'm guessing it's missing stuff.

Tales is a good series but unfortunately it's been raped to death in the US.  The only Tales that got a good localization were Symphonia and Vesperia and while ok games, there are much better Tales titles that have been left in Japan.  It's tough as a Tales fan because it's really hard to recommend English Tales games and you can't recommend Japanese ones :(

I dig VP, but it's definitely a game that has to click with you.  The first time I played it when it came out, I got a few hours in and dropped it.  Then when it was ported to PSP I gave it another shot and used a faq to follow the right steps to get the perfect ending on my playthrough and I loved the game.  My favorite Tri-ace title.

mmm

Megaman Powered Up - it's a remake of the original but the robot masters got new attack,it got a new shiny coat, new robot masters to bring the number to 8 and the levels are redone,it also has a level editor, the ability to play as robot masters and special challenge to see how well you fare with certain gimmicks like time man slow time ability... pretty good stuff

Jeanne d'arc - animu joanne d'arc SRPG by level 5,the game it's pretty standard SRPG stuff but the whole jeanne d'arc plot gives it a pleasant original twist... at least until the game gets hit with the stick of RPG cliche's near the end

Monster Hunter Frontier - actualy i haven't played this so why i'm putting this on the list? because i played the wii version and it's very good! basicaly a group of 4 players bands all together and then they go punching a giant monster to death, and then with the hide and fangs of that monster they make new weapons and armors,it's kinda like playing diablo if you never fought small fries... the controls are a little clunky (actualy especialy clunky on the psp since you have to move the camera with the digital buttons)
and to be fair it's not much fun to play alone (and there is no online with the psp) but if you can gather enough people it's very good!
you might want to wait a little tough since an upgraded port of the wii version is in the work

Half Minute Hero - i made a huge post about this one
http://www.evilbore.com/forum/index.php?topic=32323.0
anyway the short version is that the world is going to explode in 30 seconds so you quickly have to level up and defeat the big bad before everything assplode! of course if every level lasted only 30 seconds the game would be over in an istant so when in town you get the chance to pay the time goddess a fee so she can reset the clock, the catch is the more time you reset, the bigger the amount of money you have to pay so you still need to be quick, the game is quite humorous and each stage feature different gimmick (it even has achievements!)
it's a pretty original and awesome game!

Prinny: Can i be the hero - it's disgaea meets ghost & goblins! it has disgaea humor and g&g tight gameplay,in short it's awesome

Patapon - patapon it's another pretty original game, basicaly you control a tribe of weird eyeball guys called patapon, but you don't issue commands normaly, instead each button of your PSP count as a drum and you issue command by playing certain tune at rhytm (so for example the "go forward tune" is "X,X,X,O") the better your rhytm, the better they fight, there are also small rpg elements as you can improve your patapon with material you find around and give them better equipment

patapon got a sequel but if you ask me,it really doesn't add much and unlike the original it's somewhat grindy
patapon is also getting a third game so maybe you might want to wait

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker - it's metal gear... it now features slightly rpg element and multiplayer,we have a thread about it so i guess it would be easier to just read that

Metal Gear Acid 2 - when most people think about card game they tend to think about magic the gathering but this would probably be better described as "stealth 2-unit x-com with random commands draw from a pool of cards" i never finished it but it was okay

Gurumin - action rpg by falcom,it's pretty reminiscent of ye olde games like alundra and brave fencer musashi,it even has the obligatory ruin dungeon!

Patchwork Heroes - quite similiar to qix but with a pretty original spin, giant airships are attacking the city so our unnamed hero decide to stop them... with a saw! basicaly you have to cut the airships removing pieces from them while dodging missiles and robot until the airship stop working

to be fair i think it's too short and simple to be worth a buy but certainly the whole theme and style is original enough to be worth a mention

what did i do to deserve this this one is quite weird too... you are an evil overlord and you have to defend yourself from those nasty hero! you do so by building yourself a nice dungeon, the entire place is divided in a grid and breaking certain block will spawn low level slimes... the slimes aren't much of a challenge but they make block which can spawns better creature like lizard and bugs and also provide food, ultimately you have to spawn enough monster to kill the heroes who try to infiltrate the dungeon

again this is pretty short and sometimes it feel like no matter what you do,you are destined to fail but like with patchwork heroes i think it's worth of a mention

Hammerin Hero - a 2.5D sidescroller, this one come from irem... it's short but fun while last, prinny is definitely better tough if you have to choice

Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force 4 - i love card game and this is the only card game you will ever be able to scraps on a console or portable,i would hold it tough because a tag force 5 has already been announced
which obviously is going to have more cards and stuff

mmm... what else, there are quite a lot of rpg but they are quite average (like crimson gem saga :smug) i guess there is class of heroes if you like dungeon crawlers?

there are also tons of ports and remake,if you have never played disgaea this is a good time to do so
riviera is also another decent game that got ported from the gba

Hmmm...

Every Extend Extra - I absolutely love this game - set off massive chains by exploding yourself, dodging bullets as well, all set to an awesome soundtrack with some great visuals. Probably Mizuguchi's second best game behind Rez.

Gradius Collection - you get Gradius 1-4 and Gaiden (never before seen in the US till this collection), all for like $20. Amazing deal if you're a shmup fan. There's also Parodius and Salamander collections but they are Japan only.

Gurumin - Fun little action RPG with some good music, and unfortunately a shitty camera

Wipeout Pulse - If you're into Wipeout, it's another solid entry in the series

Oh and soon: Ys 7, Ys Oath in Felghana, Ys 1+2 remake, and the Sora no Kiseki games
^_^

aren't both suikoden games on the psn service tough?
it seems silly to cry about a port when you can buy the original thing anyway
EDIT: apparently only the original suikoden 1 is :lol
sony fails again :lol :lol

a hacked psp could run the original suikoden 2 with POPS probably but i guess you are otherwise screwed until sony decide to release suikoden 2 too

The PSP version is actually really nice.  Real widescreen 1:1 resolution, load times eliminated, some other nice things porty things, but no new content.

If I ever feel like replaying either, that's the version I'll go with.

That actually got me curious to see how Suikoden II looks on a PSP-3000 screen.

Looks great!  No noticeable interlacing or anything.  Very sharp thanks to not being a cheap port and actually remapping the game 1:1 to the PSP resolution.  I gotta replay these ones of these years.

one game i have a hate/love relationship is dungeon maker,it's a dungeon crawler but the gimmick is that you build the dungeon as you go and putting different stuff in it,will generate different monster... the idea is neat but the execution shoddy, lot of quest involve getting some rare item that the monster simply will refuse to drop, most monsters drop no money (and the one that do just drops spare change) so you are reliant on drop if you want to buy new stuff to put in the dungeons so if monsters aren't being generous, you are screwed (tough in defense of the game, they usualy are) similary there is no experience, you get stronger by eating meals that you create with... you guessed it! monster drops! it's also pretty hard to realize how you are faring, the game gives you a score and hint about how to increase it but there is really no hard fact that you can use to see how you are faring
the whole game also barely change... as you go deeper, you get to create new rooms which attract new monsters which drop new loot but it really doesn't add anything much, there are bosses but it's just a matter of bringing tons of healing item

the weird thing is that it got i think 3 sequels and even a DS variant

the third one is japan only tough

the ds one is pretty different,it features cutesy graphic and turn based combat
it has no "score" crap, you build a room, you get a monster out of it,drop rate also depends on how many monster you fight at once so if you build your dungeon right you are always assured at least a drop

the ds also got my world,my way... it steals all of the graphics of dungeon maker ds and the gimmick here is that you are a princess and you can whine about certain elements of the game,if a quest is too annoying you can whine and skip it,if monster don't drop enough loot, you can whine that they should drop more loot... again like dungeon maker it's a cool idea but the execution is horrible, every quest is like "kills 5 bats" and "bring me 10 bat wings" and the combat is simpler than dragon quest 2 (did i mention you only have 2 party members?) for some weird reason it got a PSP port-up but the PSP port-up it's japan only

the last game made in this vein is called adventures to go and i think this is where they really lost it... or at least that's where i did! this game re-uses YET again all the graphics from dungeon maker DS but at least this time combat has now been turned into a SRPG of sort, the gimmick here is that you buy dungeons and then use the loot you get from the dungeon to buy harder dungeons... this wouldn't be a bad idea if it wasn't for the fact that the loot is scarce and that each trip costs a shitload of money

these games were already kind of dull but when you are asking to cough up money to get money you just failed big time

I believe it got the Professor Prole Seal of Approval, IIRC.

I replayed Suikoden II on the PSOne about two years ago, and it was still a great game. One of my favorite JRPGs.

Anyway, I had some store credit so I went kinda crazy today and bought:
- Half-Minute Hero
- Jeanne d'Arc
- Space Invaders Remix
- Yggdra Union
- Disgaea 1
- ModNation Racers
- Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 (kinda wanted Pangya instead, but it was $30, so eff that)

Since this seems like as good a place as any to ask this, is Wipeout Pure worth playing if I've already played Wipeout Pulse completely? I'm mainly wondering what the differences between it and Pulse are, I guess. It's dirt cheap, I'm just not sure if it's worth the time to play it if I still have Pulse.

Pulse is the more refined game, but there's elements of fun to be had with Pure... the load times are much worse than Pulse tho.

Also it sucks I never picked up Crimson Gem Saga when it came out, and now I can't find a new copy anywhere in stores :(

Yeah if you haven't played D2, the PSP version is awesome.  They added an entirely new story campaign for D1/D2

D1 = Etna campaign
D2 = Axel campaign

Full voiced story cutscenes and maps and everything.

Is there anything good on the Downloadable front? I browsed the store earlier today, but it was hard to tell.

Just normal psp games for cheap prices (Syphon Filter 2 for $10, Patapon 2 for $8, etc...) and some classic PS1 games for $5 usually.  There aren't any PSN/DSiware type games really.

Damn, that looks gorgeous.  Makes me regret not getting one when it was still available.

Is this PSP crackable though?  I would like CFW, not so much for getting free games but for playing games off a memory stick.  Playing games off slow and noisy UMDs really suck.

Not crackable :(

Earlier 3000s were, but they go for high prices 2nd hand now.

Can always rebuy stuff on PSN and play it off memory stick for games you actually want to play.  Most are like $10-15 on PSN now.  Selection is missing a ton of stuff though.
