My birthday is next month and my loving girlfriend has agreed to buy me one of the following similarly priced gifts:

iPhone 4

Bicycle (something like this, probably used off Craigslist unless you can recommend a decent beginner's new roadbike for <$300 USD)

Motorcycle boots

But I can't decide! Which one should I ask for?

For triathlons try to get a Time Trial bike.

Since you're competing I wouldn't bother getting a $300 time trial bike and just save up.

if you cared about an iphone enough to use it to its fullest you would have gotten it by now. most people who receive it as gifts never use the app store and shit. they use it just like a regular phone which is why they never had enough interest in it to buy it on their own.

The way I look at it is the utility aspect. The boots are a necessity for the track. The bike is a helpful accessory to keeping yourself in shape. The phone is mostly useless given that you already have one, and the newer version likely only does a small amount of things your current one can't.

So I'd let her get me the phone.

You buy the utilitarian things you need, and let the presents from others be the things you want but have a harder time justifying.
